  • Notes
    • Elizabeth Somerset [daughter of Elizabeth Browne, d. between 20 April and 23 Oct 1565; married bef 1527, as his 2nd wife, Sir Henry Somerset, KG, Earl of Worcester, d. 26 Nov 1549, son of Charles Somerset, KG, Earl of Worcester and Elizabeth Herbert); married Sir Roger Vaughan, Knight, of Talgarth and Portheme, son of Sir Roger Vaughan and Denise. [Magna Charta Sureties]

Evidences to this point are adequate. Next 5 generations [starting with marriage of Elizabeth and Roger Vaughan] require further research and support. Neither Burke nor Jones says that Elizabeth Somerset married Sir Roger Vaughan, and Jones gives an entirely different wife. [Magna Charta Sureties]

      --------------------------------------------------

The above citation with comments from MCS indicates doubt as to this marriage, though they did publish the citation. Certainly I would agree that Roger in no way married the daughter of a 1527 marriage. However at least one source on World Connect (George F. Moyer, db=gfmjr13) has Roger's wife as Eleanor Somerset, illegitimate daughter of Sir Henry Somerset's grandfather, Henry Beaufort, Duke of Somerset by Joan Hill (note that Henry Somerset and Henry Beaufort, Duke of Somerset are similar names). The dates for this Eleanor or Elizabeth fit with her being a 2nd wife of Roger and mother of Elizabeth Vaughan, who was born about 5 years after 1st wife Jane/Joan Whitney's death. Roger seems to have been too minor of a noble to marry a Duke's legitimate daughter (or even the Earl of Worcester's legitimate daughter), but an illegitimate daughter, even of a Duke, would be more fitting.
