    Notes:

Peter was of Lillingstone Darrell, Buckingham and Member of Parliment for Tamworth for 28 years. He with his brother Paul were leaders of the Puritan party in the time of Queen Elizabeth, and was committed to the Tower of London and is reported to have died there 10 Nov. 1596. Two years before his death he wrote while in the Tower a discourse on Succession to the Crown.

Sir Peter was from a strong Puritan background with a radical religious upbringing. Some of the family went into exile during the reign of Queen Mary. Peter inherited Lillingstone Lovell from his father. He entered the Parliament House of Commons in 1571 for Barnstaple and subsequently in 1572 for Tregony and 1586, 1589 and 1593 for Northampton. His strong defense of religious freedom ensured a continuous clash with the established way. He was chastised by Archbishop Parker over the issue of members of Parliament determining for themselves whether something in a bill agreed with the Word of God. His philosophy could be summed when he said that he had rather commit some folly in speech than do injury by silence. Inroads on the freedom of speech by leaders in Parliament and the Queen led to his explicit criticism of her and within a few days he was sent by the House leadership to the Tower. A month later at the end of the Session, the Queen intervened and he was returned to the House. In march 1587 he again agitated in the House for certain liberties and with Anthony Cope and 3 others was sent to the Tower for the remainder of the Session. In August 1591 he was committed a prisoner to the Gatehouse until February 1592 because of a tract he drafted to the Queen. In February 1593 an unrepentant Wentworth again pushed forward with his agenda of freedom and as a disturber of the Queens policy of peaceful transition of power and was again imprisoned in the Tower. There he remained until his death even though he likely could have secured his release upon repentance which he would not do. His wife Elizabeth was permitted to live with him in the Tower where she preceded him in death in July 1596. Although he was not given much respect by his own generation of House members, his notions of freedom and about privilege and power became the accepted doctrine with the parliamentary opposition of the next generation.
