    BARONY OF LA WARRE (III)

ROGER (LA WARRE), LORD LA WARRE, grandson and heir, being son and heir of John LA WARRE, by Margaret (who died 20 or 22 August 1349), daughter of Sir Robert DE HOLAND, of West Derby, co. Lancaster, Yoxall, co. Stafford, &c. [LORD HOLAND], which John was son and heir apparent of the last Lord, but died v.p., shortly before 24 June 1331. He was born 30 November 1326. He was in the retinue of the Prince at the battle of Crecy and, at the siege of Calais. On 7 November 1349 the King took his homage, and he had livery of divers manors which his mother had held for life: he was then a knight. On 22 April 1353 the King took his homage and fealty, and he had livery of the manor of Wakerley and obtained also the manor of Swineshead, both of which his grandmother, Joan, had held for life. He accompanied the Prince of Wales to Gascony in September 1355, and was in the skirmish at Romorantin in Sologne, and at the battle of Poitiers (c). (c) The King of France surrendered himself at Poitiers to Denis de Morbek, a knight of Artois, according to Froissart, who give a minute account. Denis was appealed against by Bernard de Troie, a squire of Gascony, in respect of the taking of the King of France at the battle of Poitiers. In 1360-61 Bernard and Denis were both frequently receiving money from Edward III, but the payments to the former only are described as "pro capcione Johannis Regis Francie". By his deed, dated 1 July 1361, "Bernardus deu Troy scutifer de Vasconia...in periculo anime mee" declared "quod die belli de Poitiers Ego cepi Regem Francie et se mihi reddidit Rex predictus et meus verus prisionarius est et nullus alius jus habet in eo preter me de jure vel racione." Witnesses: the lords Oivier de Clisson, William de Montagu, Bartholomew de Burghersh, Robert de Holand, Thomas de Ros, Bernard de Brocas, etc. There is a story that Roger la Warre and John Pelham were in the crowd which surrounded the King, the former getting the King's sword, and the latter his belt: and that Roger therefore took the crampet or chape of a sword, and John a buckle, as their badges. Froissart does not mention either of them.

Roger married Eleanor (Alianore) De MOWBRAY before 23 Jul 1358 in 1st Husband 3Rd Wife. Eleanor (daughter of John 3Rd Baron De MOWBRAY, Of Thirsk, Sir and Joan PLANTAGENET) was born about 1345 in Epworth, Isle Of Axholme, Lincolnshire, England; died before 18 Jun 1387. Suffolk, other creations: Following William de Ufford's death, when the Earldom of Suffolk of the second creation is deemed to have expired, the titles was conferred in 1385, barely three and a half years later, on Michael de la Pole, of a prosperous but bourgeois family from Hull. His career as diplomat and official flourished (he was Lord Chancellor in the mid-1380's) but his being a favourite of Richard II made him unpopular with the more established nobility and he was tried "in absentia" for high treason and on being found guilty forfeited his titles. Shortly before Richard II's own fall the son, another Michael, was restored to his father's honours but this restoration was itself annulled on Henry IV's coming to the throne. Michael managed to make his peace with the new King, however, and had the Earldom restored to him a second time. [Burke's Peerage, p. 2761]

He was summoned v.p. to Parliament 20 January 1365/6 and on to 28 September 1384, by writs directcd Michaeli de la Pole, whereby he is held to have become LORD DE LA POLE. He succeeded his father as above, 21 June 1366; was a Commissioner of array for the East Riding of Yorks and Kingston-upon-Hull, 10 February, and de walliis et fossatis for the waters of Hull and Derwent, 30 July 1367; served again in the French wars from 1369, taking part in the sieges of Limoges (under the Black Prince), September 1370, and Montfont (under the Duke of Lancaster), December 1370-January 1370/1; Admiral of the fleet from the mouth of the Thames towards the north, 24 November 1376 (re-appointed 14 August following)--5 Dec. 1377; Commissioner to receive the castle of Brest from the Duke of Brittany, 9 April 1378, in which year also he accompanied Lancaster's abortive naval expedition against St. Malo. P.C. before 18 March 1378/9; Chief Ambassador to Milan (to negotiate a marriage between Richard Il and Catherine, daughter of Barnarbo Visconti of Milan), 18 March 1378/9, also to Rome and to Wenceslas, King of the Romans and of Bohemia (to suggest a marriage between Richard II and Anne, sister of Wenceslas), during which latter embassy he was made prisoner (as was also, apparently, Anne) before 19 January 1379/80, and was ransomed "at a high price" before 28 March 1381; joint Governor of the King, November 1381; Lord Chancellor of England, 13 March 1382/3-23 October 1386.

His favour with the King making him unpopular, he was impeached and convicted in the Parliament that met at Westminster, 1 October 1386, whereby many of his lands were forfeited, he was heavily fined and was committed to Corfe Castle. The King, however, sent him to Windsor, where he was soon released; and the above proceedings were declared void by the judges at Nottingham, 25 August 1387. He was with the King and Robert (de Vere), Duke of Ireland, in Wales and the Midlands during the summer of 1387 and returned with them to London, I0 November. But being accused by Gloucester, Arundel and Warwick (the "Lords Appellant"), he fled the realm in December 1387, and was in his absence found guilty of high treason by Parliament, 13 February 1387/8 (l), whereby all his honours were forfeited.

He married, before 18 October 1361, Katherine, daughter and heir of Sir John WINGFIELD, of Wingfield, Suffolk, by Eleanor, daughter and heir of Gilbert (or Ralph) de Glanville.
