Notes:

He [Hugh de Hastinges] married, before 18 May 1330, Margery, sister and coheir, and in her issue sole heir, of Richard FOLIOT, of Gressenhall and Weasenham, Norfolk, [3rd Lord Foliot] (who died s.p. and a minor, 29 May 1325), and elder daughter of Sir Richard FOLIOT 2nd Lord Foliot], of the same, by Joan, younger daughter and coheir of Sir William DE BREOUSE, Lord of Bramber and Gower [LORD BREOUSE]. On 13 June and 11 December 1330 Hugh and Margery had livery of her purparty of the lands of her grandmother, Margery, widow of Jordan Foliot. He died 29 or 30 July 1347, and was buried in Elsing Church, Norfolk: brass. The manors, which he and his wife had held jointly at his death, were released to her, Elsing and Weasenham, 7 September 1347, and Norton and Fenwick, 5 October following. She, who was aged 12 or 13 in 1325, died 8 August, and was buried 30 August 1349, in the Furnivalle Chapel, in the Church of the Friars Minor at Doncaster. SIR RICHARD FOLIOT, of Gressenhall and Weasenham, son and heir, born 25 December 1283. His father's lands were liberated, 18 October 1299. He was going beyond seas on the King's service in January 1307/8.

He married (her marriage being granted to him, 16 September 1310) Joan, widow of James DE BOHUN, of Maddenstown, co. Kildare (who was born at Ford, Sussex, 3 February 1280/1, and baptized there, and died shortly before 30 May 1306, and younger daughter and coheir of Sir William DE BREOUSE, Lord of Bramber and Gower [LORD BREOUSE], by his 1st wife, whose name is unknown. He died on the King's service in Scotland, before 23 July 1317. His widow, who held the manor of Gressenhall for life, died before 23 June 1324. NOTE: This is the first cousin of my sons wife's line. Making Abby my 25th cousin. Three other identified lines also converge paths with Abby within 6 generations, branching prior to this person.

William de Braose, in the 22nd of Edward I [1293], had summons to attend the king with other great men to advise regarding the important affairs of the realm. And about the beginning of the ensuing September, he was one of those who embarked at Portsmouth with horse and arms in the king's service for Gascony. In the 28th and 29th of the same reign,he was in the wars of Scotland, and in the latter year he had summons to parliament as a baron. In the 32nd [1304], he was again in the Scottish wars and then enjoyed so much favour that the king not only confirmed to him and his heirs the grant of Gower Land, made by King john to his ancestor, but granted that he and they should thenceforth enjoy all regal jurisdiction, liberties, and privileges there in as ample a manner as Gilder de Clare, son of Richard de Clare, sometimes Earl of Gloucester, had in all his lands of Glamorgan. For several years afterwards, his lordship appears to have been constantly engaged upon the same theatre of war and was always eminently distinguished. In the 14th Edward II [1321], according to Thomas of Walsingham, being "a person who had a large patrimony but a great unthrift," his lordship put up for sale his noble territory of Gower Land, and absolutely sold it under the king's license to the Earl of Hereford; but its contiguity to the lands of the younger Spencer (who was then high in royal favour, and the king's chamberlain), attracting the attention of that minion, he forcibly possessed himself of the estate and thus gave rise to the insurrection headed by Thomas Plantagenet, Earl of Lancaster. Lord Braose m. Aliva, dau. of Thomas de Moulton, and had issue, Aliva, m. 1st, to John de Mowbray, and 2ndly, to Sir Richard de Pershall, and Joan, m. to John* de Bohun, of Midhurst. His lordship, who had regular summons to parliament to 18 September, 1322, d. in that year, when the Barony of Braose, of Gower, fell into abeyance between his daus. and co-heirs, and it so continues with their representatives. Notes:

William was only 12 when his father died. The wardship of William and the de Braose lands were granted by Henry III to Peter des Rievaux. On his fall in 1234 these custodies were passed on to the king's brother Richard, Earl of Cornwall. When William came of age he took control of the Braose lands in Gower, Bramber and Tetbury. He confirmed the grants made by his father of the rents of cottages in Tetbury (they are still there) to the priory at Aconbury, founded in the memory of Maud de St Valery by her daughter Margaret.

He was plagued throughout his life by a series of legal battles over land rights with his female relatives.

William de Braose, in the 41st Henry III [1257], when Llewellyn ap Griffith menaced the marches of Wales with a great army, was commanded by the king to defend his own marches about Gower, and the next year he had a military summons to attend the king Chester. In two years afterwards, he was again in arms under Roger de Mortimer against the Welsh, and was one of the barons who became pledged for King Henry, abiding the award of Louis, King of France. He d. in 1290, leaving by Isabel de Clare, his first wife, a son, William de Braose. Peter de Braose, half-brother of William, Lord Braose, of Gower. Peter's son, Thomas, was found heir to his grandmother, Mary de Ros (his grandfather, William de Braose's 2nd wife). NOTE: From the above information it is certain which William de Braose was Peter's father, for only this one William was summoned to parliament as a baron. However, in attempting to connect Mary de Ros to William, there are some pretty glaring date inconsistencies. e.g., William died in 1290, and Mary wasn't born until around 1298. It's possible the approximated year of birth for Mary is somewhat off, but surely not that far off. According to Burke, her father, William de Ros, was b. 1255, thus, she could have been born as early as perhaps 1271. Her father d. in 1316, and her grandfather died 16 June, 1285. Her 2nd husband, Thomas of Brotherton, was born 1 June, 1300. Had she been born as early as 1271, she would have been 29 years older than her 2nd husband. It's almost as if there had been two separate individuals named Mary de Ros, yet Burke says "Mary m. 1st, to William Braose, and 2ndly, to Thomas de Brotherton, Duke of Norfolk."

William married Aline De MULTON in 1255 in Bramber, Sussex, England. Aline (daughter of Thomas DE MULTON and Maude DE VAUX) was born about 1240 in Gilsland, Irthington, Cumberland, England; died in 1268 in Bramber, Sussex, England. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]
