    BARONY OF FITZWALTER (IV, 5) 1386

    WALTER (FITZWALTER), LORD FITZWALTER, 2nd but 1st surviving son and heir, by 1st wife, born at Henham, 5 September 1368. On 21 February 1389/90 the King took his homage and fealty and he had livery of his father's lands, his age having previously been proved. In February 1394/5 he was on the King's service in Ireland with the Duke of Gloucester. He was summoned to Parliament from 12 September 1390 to 25 August 1404, by writs directed Waltero fitz Wauter. As one of the Lords temporal, he swore on the altar of the shrine of St. Edward at Westminster, 30 September 1397, to maintain all the statutes &c. made in the preceding session of Parliament. In May 1398 he was in Ireland with the Earl of March, Lieutenant of Ireland. On 18 October 1399 he created a scene in Parliament by accusing the Duke of Aumarle of being accessory to the murder of the Duke of Gloucester. He gave his assent, in Parliament, 23 October 1399, to the secret imprisonment of Richard II.

    He married Joan, sister and heir of Sir John DEVEREUX, of Whitechurch Maund, co. Hereford (who died s.p. 13 November 1396), and only daughter of Sir John DEVFREUX, of Dinton, Bucks, &c. [LORD DEVEREUX], by Margaret, daughter of John (DE VEER), EARL OF OXrORD. They had livery of the manor of Dinton, 2 August 1397, the escheator in co. Bucks being ordered to take his fealty. On 5 June 1400 he obtained licence for his feoffees to grant the manor of Burnham, Essex, to his wife, for life. In passing by sea from Rome to Naples, he was captured by Saracens and taken prisoner to Tunis. Having been ransomed by some Genoese merchants, he died at Venice, 16 May 1406, aged 37. His widow's dower was ordered to be assigned, 29 January 1407/8. Before this date she had married (royal licence, 1 July 1407, to marry whom she would, for a fine ?40),(t) as 3rd wife, Sir Hugh BURNELL, of Holdgate, Salop,Weoley, co.Worcester, &c. [LORD BURNELL], who died 27 November 1420, and whose will, directing his burial to be in the Abbey of Hales Owen, was dated at Weoley, 2 October 1417, and proved in the Palace of the Archbishop of Canterbury, 6 February 1420/1. She, for whom robes of the Garter were provided in 1399 and 1409, was aged 17 and more in 1397, died 10 or 11 May 1409, and was buried in Dunmow Priory. Joan (daughter of John 1St Baron DEVEREUX, Of Lyonshall, Sir and Margaret (Maud) De VERE) was born before 1380 in Lyonshall, Kington, Herefordshire, England; died on 11 May 1409 in Acton Burnell Castle, Shrewsbury, Shropshire, England; was buried in Dunmow Priory, Essex, England.
