Usually spelled Strangways without an 'e'. Strangeways would be a variation.

Joan Strangways was married to Sir William Willoughby by July 1461 when her half-brother, John (VI) de Mowbray, granted to them, for their lives, the reversion of six Yorkshire manors held for life by Katherine. John (VII) confirmed the grant in 1465 but Willoughby had died by Aug. 1468 [When, as his widow, Joan was granted an annuity of 100 marks from the tunnage and poundage of London: CPR 1467-77, 107.] and in the November following she married John's cousin William Lord Berkeley. In June 1475 John (VII) granted to Joan and William the six Yorkshire manors, for Joan's life, and his estate officials were instructed to accept them as occupiers. Joan died in Feb. 1485.

    Notes:

Katharine or Katherine Nevill(e); m. 1st 2nd Duke of Norfolk of the 1397 creation; m. 2nd before 27 Jan 1441/2 Sir Thomas Strangeways; m. 3rd after 1442, as his 2nd wife, 1st Viscount Beaumont; m. 4th just after 1464 Sir John Woodville, brother of Elizabeth, Queen Consort of Edward IV. [Burke's Peerage]

    -------------------------

He [John Beaumont] married 2ndly, after 1442, Katharine, widow of Sir Thomas STRANGWAYS, and before that of JOHN (DE MOWBRAY), DUKE OF NORFOLK) and daughter of Ralph (NEVILL), EARL OF WESTMORLAND, by his 2nd wife, Joan DE BEAUFORT, daughter of John of Gaunt, DUKE OF LANCASTER. He died 10 July 1460, being slain under the Lancastrian banner, at the battle of Northampton. His widow married, 4thly, shortly after 1464, Sir John WIDVILLE) who was beheaded (with his father, EARL RIVERS) at Kenilworth) 12 August 1469. [Complete Peerage II:62, (transcribed by Dave Utzinger)]

Note: Talk about an age difference. Katherine was probably 40 years or more older than her 4th husband! It makes you wonder whether John Wydeville was a brother of Richard Wydeville, 1st Earl Rivers, rather than his son.

The following excerpt from a post to SGM, 16 Oct 2001, by Henry Sutliff, supports the "May-Dec" marriage of Katherine & John Wydeville:

"Also, let's all not put an undue amount of emphasis on the Royal Descents. I cannot think of any family that made a greater effort at making political marriages than the Wydevilles. The suggestion that everything was based on Royal Descents rather than political strategy is not correct. Both were considerations. I regret not having my notes handy, but Elizabeth Wydeville's brother John was married to Katherine Neville, Dowager Duchess of Norfolk and thrice widowed. John Wydeville was more than 40 years her junior. This marriage had nothing to do with Royal Descents, but everything to do with politics, alliance and money."

I used to mistakenly state "40 years or more younger" in the note above, but thanks to Pomala Black, [email protected] for correcting me in the following post-em:

Wasn't Katherine 40 years plus OLDER than her 4th husband rather than younger? Maybe this marriage is recorded between the wrong people.
