    Notes:

He [William Daubeney] married Alice, 3rd daughter and coheir of John STOURTON, of Preston Plucknett, Somerset, by his 3rd wife, Katherine, daughter and heir of Thomas PAYNE, of Paynshay, Devon. He died 2 Jan 1460/1, aged 36. His widow, who was aged 7 and more in October 1439, married Robert HILL, of Houndston, Somerset, and Talaton, Devon, who died 8 September 1493, and was buried in Dunster Church, Somerset. [Complete Peerage IV:102, (transcribed by Dave Utzinger)]

Alice married William DAUBENY, Of South Ingleby, Sir in 1st Husband. William was born on 11 Jun 1424 in South Ingleby, Lincolnshire, England; died on 2 Jan 1460-1461 in South Petherton, Yeovil, Somerset, England. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

    Notes:

I think that John has too many wives. The only one that I have a good source for is Katherine Payne, who CP says is the 3rd wife; but there are 3 others that look like they preceded her. Maybe one was a mistake, or was a mistress?

John married Katherine PAYNE before 1431 in Of Devonshire, England. Katherine was born about 1407 in Paynshay, Devonshire, England; died in 1473. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

  2. 3.  Katherine PAYNE was born about 1407 in Paynshay, Devonshire, England; died in 1473.

    Notes:

I have sources for John de Stourton (as father of Esther/Edith, no parentage indicated), who I assume to be this John, who CP [vol XII/1:300 note (h)] indicates is "of Preston Plucknett", being the younger son of John of Stourton. I think that there were many John de Stourtons, which makes it confusing as to how many there were in a row, and who was married to which wife. His marriages to Jane Basset and Catherine Beaumont are taken from World Connect/LDS sources. His son John is sourced as "of Preston Plucknett" and father of Alice. There is no source connecting John with his son John, except that it is pretty obvious because both are of Preston Plucknett.

The elder son William (of John & Lettice) held Stourton with a descendancy that goes into the 1960's, while this John, his younger brother, was ancestor of the Stourtons of Preston, which his father John acquired in 1380 (source - CP).

John married Jane BASSET in 1st Wife. Jane (daughter of Ralph 1St Baron BASSET, Of Sapcote, Sir and Alice De DRIBY) was born about 1368 in Glastonbury, Wells, Somerset, England; died before 1394. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

  2. 5.  Jane BASSET was born about 1368 in Glastonbury, Wells, Somerset, England (daughter of Ralph 1St Baron BASSET, Of Sapcote, Sir and Alice De DRIBY); died before 1394.

    Notes:

Many people have Jane as daughter of Ralph of Drayton by Joan de Beauchamp, but he dvp, as indicated by his will (source: CP - see Ralph 3rd Baron Basset, of Drayton's entry in my files). Also indicated by his heirs is that Ralph had only one sister (Isabel, who may have been a full or half sister); so Jane is also not a daughter of the prior generation (Ralph of Drayton & Alice Audley).

I see by the soc.genealogy.medieval that at least one person (Sid Telford) has Jane as daughter of Ralph Basset of Sapcote by Alice Driby. The dates would support such a pedigree; although the Complete Peerage mentions no daughter named Jane for Ralph of Sapcote, who died without male heir, but I find it easier to conceive of "missing" a daughter when one has at least two, than to "miss" a daughter when indications are that you had no heirs/children.

I have found no written source for Jane, although I find a hint that "Magna Charta Barons" and "Burke's Extinct Peerage" might have indicated Jane was daughter of Ralph of Drayton & Joan de Beauchamp (which may be the source of the numerous people who have the pedigree that way). One of the hints is from Dave Utzinger, which has "MCB" as the source for Jane being daughter of Ralph & Joan. Dave sent an e-mail to soc.genalogy.medieval in 1998 indicating Jane was daughter of Ralph & Joan, however he has since removed Jane from that relationship.

Of course Jane could be an illegitimate child; but I will place her as daughter of Ralph of Sapcote until more information arises.

Most people give Jane a birth year of 1378, with a son John b. 1384 (mother at the age of 6!). Some have 1368, which seems reasonable. Also her son John might have been born later than 1384.

    Children:
    1. 2. John STOURTON, Of Preston was born about 1384 in Preston Plucknett, Yeovil, Somerset, England; died on 10 Nov 1438.

  3. Children:
    1. 3. Katherine PAYNE was born about 1407 in Paynshay, Devonshire, England; died in 1473.

Generation: 4

    Children:
    1. 4. John De STOURTON, Of Preston, Sir Knight was born after 1361 in Stourton With Gasper, Mere, Wiltshire, England; died in 1405 in Preston Plucknett, Yeovil, Somerset, England.

  • 10.  Ralph 1St Baron BASSET, Of Sapcote, Sir was born about 1329 in Sapcote, Hinckley, Leicestershire, England (son of Ralph BASSET, Of Sapcote, Sir and Sibyl ASTLEY); died on 17 Jul 1378 in Bytham Castle, Bourne, Lincolnshire, England (Dspm).

    Notes:

BARONY of BASSET (of Sapcote) (I)

RALPH BASSET, son and heir, under age in 1330. In July 1369, being then aged over 40, he became, by the death of his cousin, Robert, Lord Colvill one of the two coheirs of the estates and Barony of that family, inheriting the Castle and Honour of Bytham, co. Lincoln, Thornton Steward, co. York, &C. In consequence, doubtless, of these acquisitions, he was summoned to Parliament 8 January 1370/1 and 6 October 1372, by writs directed Radulfo Basset de Sapcote, whereby he is held to have become LORD BASSET. He fought in the French wars and was one of the heroes of Crecy.

He married 1stly, about 1346, Sibyl, sister of Thomas ASTLEY [3rd LORD ASTLEY], and daughter of Sir Giles Astley, by Alice, 2nd daughter and coheir of Sir Thomas DE WOLVEY. He married, 2ndly, Alice, daughter of John DERBY. He died s.p.m., 17 July 1378, when the Barony fell (according to modern doctrine) into abeyance between his two daughters and coheirs. Will, as Ralph Basset, knight, Lord of Sapcote, directing his burial to be at Castle Bytham, dated there the Monday after the Ascension I I May 1377, proved at Lincoln. His widow, who married Sir Robert TUCHET, and afterwards Sir Anketine MALLORY, died a widow, 12 October 1412, and was buried at Stamford, near her last husband. [Complete Peerage II:7-8, (transcribed by Dave Utzinger)]

Note: I disagree with CP in this situation. Due to the fact that Sibyl was born before 1317 (and probably earlier), I think that Sibyl and Ralph were the mother and father of this Ralph, and were born well before 1346.

Ralph married Alice De DRIBY about 1365 in 2ND Husband, 2ND Wife. Alice was born about 1340 in Wokefield, Stratfield Mortimer, Berkshire, England; died on 12 Oct 1412 in Stamford, Lincolnshire, England. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

  • 11.  Alice De DRIBY was born about 1340 in Wokefield, Stratfield Mortimer, Berkshire, England; died on 12 Oct 1412 in Stamford, Lincolnshire, England.

    Other Events:

    • _UID: 602334FE0BB442F0BA178C118B52FBF1DD26

    Notes:

Alice de Driby, b. c 1340, d. 12 Oct 1412, will as Alicia Basset de Bytham, Apr 1412, probated 26 Oct 1412, Inq.p.m. 1413 #15; m. (1) Sir Ralph Basset, Lord Basset of Sapcote, d. 17 July 1378, issue; m. (2) Sir Robert Tochet, no issue; m. (3) Sir Anketil Mallory, Knight, of Kirkby Mallory, co. Leics, d. 26 Mar 1393 (Order of 1st two marriages uncertain). [Ancestral Roots]

Note: Even if the 1st two marriages were reversed, Sir Ralph Basset didn't die until 1378, and Alice had Sir William, b. c 1375 with Anketil Mallory. It doesn't quite make sense. Probably her son William wasn't born until after 1380.

Note: Paul C. Reed, in a posting to soc.genealogy.medieval 25 Jan 2002, states that the order is reversed for the 1st two marriages: (1) Robert Tuchet, (2) Ralph Basset, (3) Anketil Mallory.
