    Based on 1840 and 1850 US Census returns, Westerloo, Albany
    , New York,birth would Have been about 1800. 1850 Census, which is much morecomplete, states that Gardner was a farmer, and the land value of hisfarm was $1800.

    Pen and ink drawings over sofa at CConnecticut are reportedly portraitsof Gardner and Minerva (Bennett) Udell. At one time they hung in thehome of Mathias Row Udell on Vernon Avenue in St. Louis.

    Gardner married Minerva BENNETT between 1831 and 1866. Minerva was born about 1800 in New York City, New York; died after 1843. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

    Lionel's granddaughter, Laura Lavinia Udall, wrote that Lionel Udall waseducated at Oxford University, England, for a physician, but neverpracticed. Tradition also says that he followed the sea in early lifeand that he looked after the property interests of his father in England.He moved with his family to Hartford, Vermont, before 1769; Selectman andSurveyor of Highways, and one of a committee to lay out or alterhighways; 1771, Townsman and "Sessor"; 1772. On December 29, 1771,Benjamin Burch, Able and Elisha Marsh and Joshua Dewey deeded theirsawmill and two acres of land to Jonathan Burch for 86 pounds, 13shillings, 5 D. Jonathan added a gristmill and a Fulling mill and onSeptember 10, 1778, sold the entire property, with mill privileges toLionel Udall of Stephentown, Rensselaer, New York, for 2000 pounds. OnSeptember 24, 1778, Lionell Udall resold the property to Joseph andElisha Marsh for 2000 pounds. Lionell Udall moved early to Stephentown,Rensselaer, New York and died in April 1779.     Undated memorandum of John S. Lawrence.
    "He was a practicing physician residing at Stonington, Connecticut, inthe first half of the eighteenth century. Dr. Udall was a man ofconsiderable prominence and appears to have had a large practice ineastern Connecticut and throughout Rhode Island, extending from NewLondon to Newport. He is said to have been born in England about 1690,to have come early to this country and to have married in Stonington,where all of his children were born and where he died in 1767. The listof his children are from an account book kept by him. The accounts inthe book range from 1750 to 1767. In the records of the FirstCongregational Church at Stonington, Connecticut is the following: 'Nov.17, 1734. Mr. Lionel Udall and his wife Abigail owned the covenant andsubjected themselves to ye discipline of the church and the same daytheir children, Anne, Abigail, and Lionel were baptized The laterbaptisms of Samuel, William the second, Mary and John are recorded. Theentire family moved about 1772 to Vermont, where many of the name Udall,have occupied prominent positions. (John D. Champlin in New EnglandGenealogical Register 40:330)"
