    Biography
Peyton was the eldest son of Sir John Peyton, 1st Baronet of Isleham and his wife Alice Osborne, daughter of Sir Edward Osborne, Lord Mayor of London.[1] He was educated at Bury School. He was knighted at Whitehall on 18 March 1611. On 16 August 1611, he was admitted to Gray's Inn.

He succeeded to the baronetcy and estates on the death of his father in December 1616. He was also owner of Great Bradley, Suffolk. In 1618 he was awarded MA by the University of Cambridge.[2]

Edward represented Cambridgeshire in Parliament beginning in 1621, during the reign of James I, and serving until 1628, in the reign of Charles I. Sir Edward clashed vehemently with the Stuarts and their Devine Right of Kings position. Charles I tried to have him tried for treason and only his powerfull position in Parliament saved him. He was a Puritan supporter of his boyhood friend Oliver Cromwell and wrote religious pamphlets attacking the immorality of the Stuart court. He was, however, always against dictatorship. The English Civil War started in 1641causing great turmoil in the land. In the ensuing cataclysm he lost his fortune, including having to sell Isleham by 1642. He was later regared by Cromwell as disaffected, suffering financially from both sides during the war.(785 vol 1:71,76)

Edward died a broken man in 1657 and is buried at Wicken, Cambridgeshire.(785 vol.1:71)

    Biography
Robert Peyton inherited large estates in Cambridgeshire, Essex and Suffolk and, as the son-in-law of Baron Rich and brother-in-law of Roger North, was eminently fitted to serve a turn as knight of the shire. He was an active local official but his career was otherwise undistinguished, not to say obscure. Nothing has come to light about his life between his education and his succeeding his father. His marriage in or before 1550 might have looked like the prelude to a political career, but Peyton was to rise no higher than the shrievalty. What, if anything, he did when the succession to the throne was contested so near his home we do not know, although his appointment as Queen Mary's first sheriff of Cambridgeshire and Huntingdonshire implies his loyalty to the new regime. It was during this year of office that five prisoners escaped from Cambridge castle gaol, an escape for which Peyton was legally answerable and in respect of which he obtained a pardon in July 1554. He was described as 'conformable' in religion in 1564 and his will, made a week before his death on 19 Oct. 1590, has a long religious preamble.

    Biography
Robert Peyton inherited land in four counties from his father and became for a short time a royal ward; the family had built up estates by marriage with heiresses and Peyton's own marriage brought him and his descendants four entailed Cambridgeshire manors and land in Essex. The names of Peyton Hall manor, Boxford, Suffolk, and of Payton Hall, Alphamstone, Essex, bore witness to the family's long residence in those places; Isleham had become its principal seat in Richard III's reign.

Peyton's wealth and ancestry assured him from early manhood a place on all Cambridgeshire commissions and may have secured him election to the Parliament of 1523, the names for which are lost. He was knighted during the first session of the Parliament of 1529, but as he was pricked sheriff towards its close he presumably did not sit in its short successor of 1536, although he may have done so again in 1545. He performed other duties appropriate to his station, serving at Anne Boleyn's coronation in 1533 and attending the christening of Prince Edward in 1536 and Anne of Cleves's reception in 1540. He was ordered to raise 80 men for service against the northern rebels in 1536 and probably served in 1544 with the vanguard of the army which captured Boulogne, a campaign for which he provided 20 footmen.

Most of Peyton's time was probably spent in the management of his estates, which he seems to have concentrated in Cambridgeshire and Suffolk. In February 1550 Peyton obtained a licence for himself and his immediate family to eat meat during Lent; his will, made in the following July, has a preamble mildly Protestant in tone. After small charitable gifts, he left money to his younger children and divided his purchased Cambridgeshire lands and Isleham manor between them in the event of his eldest son Robert's failing to honour his (unspecified) arrangements as to Wicken manor. He directed his wife, the executrix to pay his debts and bring up their younger sons; Robert was to receive ?50 a year for 14 years from the income of Wicken manor, valued in the inquisition post mortem at only ?40 a year. Peyton died at Isleham on 1 Aug. 1550, the day after he made his will, and was buried in the church there.
