John HIGLEY (628), born 22 Jul 1649, Frimley, England, married 1696, died 27 Aug 1714, Simsbury, CT. SOURCE NOTES: John Higley, the son of Jonathan Higley and Katherine Brewster, was born at Frimely Parrish, Surrey, England on January 3, 1647. He was the progenitor of almost all Higleys in America and a great deal of his tradition has come down to our time. John's father' Jonathan, died when John was young and he was left in the care of his mother. Soon after his father's death, she apprenticed John to a trade as was the common custom of the time. John was, by his mother's wishes to become a glove maker. However, John had different ideas. His master proved severe and overbearing and the weekly tasks overworked young John. One Saturday night, upon John's failure to perform a certain task to his master's satisfaction, John was promised a sound flogging the fol- lowing Monday (such floggings not being permitted on the Sabbath). John, being sensible as most of his descendants have been, decided that this was not for him, and he ran away. Being underage and impoverished, not to mention on the lamb, John's one choice was to indenture himself and take ship to the new world. At the time the colonies were desperate for workers of every kind and John found a ship whose captain arranged pas- sage for him with the understanding that he would be sold upon his arrival. Upon the ship's arrival she sailed up the Connecticut River to Windsor in the Colony of Connecticut. There, with his consent, John was sold to Mr. John Drake. He was admitted to the Drake family as one of its number and soon became a family favorite. In Lame John retired his indenturement and remained thereafter in the service of John Drake by choice. It was at about this time, he having come to manhood, the he and Hannah Drake, the el- dest of John Drake's daughters, plighted their troth. But in those days it was not a simple matter to get married. Though they certainly had the blessings of the Drake household, there was still the matter of John's own mother in England and the unsatisfied master glove maker. With the same Higley fortitude and perseverance that he passed to future generations of Higleys, John undertook the 51 day voyage back to England. Landing safely he proceeded to Frimely and soon stood once more upon his rnother's threshold. After a five year absence, the tall, strong man on her door step did not resemble her son, and Katherine Higley had no clue as to who it was who greeted her and handed her a letter. The letter contained his declaration of true and honest heart and she wept as she read it. Glancing at the stranger before her, she caught her breath as maternal in- stinct moved her. Advancing to his side she parted his hair and discovered a scar from a fall John had taken down some stairs when he was ten. "John, you rogue! Is that you?" she exclaimed and soundly cuffed his ear. Of course, after the happy reunion she gave John her blessing and, after making satisfactory arrangements with the glove maker, he was once more on a ship to America to claim his bride. After their marriage the young couple took up residence on the eastern shore of the Connecticut River and raised a large family. Their children were John, Jonathan, Elizabeth, Katherine, Brew- ster, Hannah, Joseph, Samuel and Mindwell. John prospered and became one of Connecticut's leading citizens. In 167l he was elected Constable for Windsor. It was also that year that he erected a warehouse and began his mercantile career that was to make him one of the wealthiest men in Connecticut, dealing pri- marily in sugar, molasses and rum between the colonies and Bermuda and Jamaica. By 1683 he held the additional office of Customs Officer and his fortune was growing rapidly. He decided to move the family to Simsbury Connecticut, about nine miles from Windsor, where he purchased 94 acres plus some additional adjacent land. Here he erected colonial home, much above the standard of the time, and moved burgeoning family. As John purchased more adjacent land over the years and extended his holdings for more than four miles along the river, the region began to be called Higley-town and was known as that for than 150 years. One of the most interesting stories concerning John Higley re- volves around the political affairs of the colony. For in 1685 King James II of England came to power and promptly required the colonies to surrender their charters in order to establish dominions under a Crown appointed governor-general. On 31 October 1687, Sir Edmund Andros arrived in Hartford, with a company of soldiers, while the General Assembly was in session. John Higley was present at the assembly. Andros demanded the assembly surren- der their charter. After heated debate that lasted until night- fall, the charter was brought into the chamber and laid upon the table in front of Adros. Suddenly the lights were extinguished, leaving the chamber in pitch dark, and the charter was spirited away. John Higley, as tradition goes, was given the charter by Captain John Wadsworth, the chief actor in the saving of the Charter, and sped away through the night to Higleytown. There the charter stayed for six weeks until it found its way to the famous Charter Oak in Hartford. We find John soon after given a commission as ensign in the Connecticut militia which was, at the time, the highest ranking officer in Simsbury. In 1689 he was elected to the General Assembly. John was devastated in 1694 by the death of his wife Hannah. She passed away on August 4 of that year at the age of 41. John did not resume his seat at the General Assembly again until 1698. These three years and the year 1703 were the only years he did not serve the assembly from 1687 until 1711. In 1696 John remarried Sarah Strong Bissel, who is our ancestor. She was a widow with two children of her own. In spite of hav- ing now a family of eleven children, Sarah and John had a large family of their own: Sarah, Nathaniel, Josiah (our ancestor), Abigail , Susanna and Isaac. And you wonder why there are so many Higleys? In 1698 John, who was by then a Lieutenant in the militia, was promoted by the General Assembly to the rank of Captain and given his own company. It is by the title "Captain" that John has come down to tradition. John continued to prosper and was engaged in numerous business and public pursuits up until the day he died, August 25, 1714 His estate showed his tremendous increase since the day he ran away from home to a strange new world to found a distinguished bloodline in America. source: abbreviation: The Higleys and their Ancestry, 1963. note: The Higleys and their Ancestry, 1963. 3. CONFLICT: http://claim.goldrush.com/~humbert death date 5 May 1740. AFN: GTTM-VV, was married to Mary Bliss in Simsbury,Hartford,Connecticut; Death Date 5 Feb 1741 BIOGRAPHY: History: Although Mary's father's family was among the first group to come to Hartford, she was living in Springfield when she married Nathaniel in 1670. Their first child is recorded as being born in Springfield. It is not clear if the couple lived in Springfield for long, but by 1675 they were back in Windsor with their two children, Nathaniel and Mary. Nathaniel Sr. is not listed among those who moved to Simsbury immediately following the war, but his older brother Joshua is listed, and his mother and step-father James Eno, did move to "Scotland", the section of Simsbury east of the ridge, in 1679. It is possible they lived with the Enos briefly, while renting land at Salmon Brook or they could have began building a homestead at Salmon Brook and that the record of Nathaniel's 1677,'78 or '79 grant was among those burned; no one bothered to record it again since he received new grants, possably for the same land, as a result of the land divisions in 1680. He continued to pay taxes in Windsor through 1686, but only because he owned three acres of upland there, not because he was a resident. BIOGRAPHY: Nathaniels will is dated 7 Feb 1740/1, probated 5 Mar 1740/1(Manwaring 3:286). He devises various real estate in both Windsor and Simsbury to the four sons,Nathaniel, Jonathan, John and Benjamin. To five living daughters, Mary, Hester, Margaret, Catherine and Sarah the moveable estate. To the son, not named, of his deceased daughter Martha, 20 shillings, to be paid by sons Nathaniel, Jonathan and John, "to buy him a Bible." (This would be Daniel Hayes). To his wife, not named, testator leaves only 20 shillings "besides what I have already secured for her before marriage." Son Benjamin is names sole executor; Witnesses: Elias Slater, Ephraim Bewell, Timothy Woodbridge. BIOGRAPHY: Nathaniel was chosen Deputy to the General Court of Connecticut for Simsbury between 1703 and 1706; again between 1720 and 1722. Was a joint signer of an agreement with pastor of the church of Hop Mewdow 27 Jun 1687. Notes:

BIOGRAPHY: Although Thomas Holcomb and most of his descendants usually spell the name "Holcomb", it bears an "e" on Dorchester and Boston records. BIOGRAPHY: History:The sources on Thomas Holcombe differ considerably on Thomas' ancestry. Thomas was born in England, most probably in one of the southwestern counties, Pembrokeshire, Wiles, or Devonshire. We do not know the date of his birth but his wife seems to have been born about 1617 and their first child born about 1634: McCracken believes this would place his birth somewhere about 1610; Seaver says 1601. Seaver and other early researchers think that Thomas was born to Gilbert and Ann Courtney Holcomb. George McCracken Writing in the "American Genealogist" Vol 26:109, found that Gilbert Holcomb's oral will stated d.s.p. which meant died without issue and that Gilbert left his estate to his brother-in-law, Richard Bonithon. McCracken's research is based on J.L. Vivian's "The visitations of the County Devon", on pages 474 and 533. Jesse Seaver thought that English records indicated that Thomas Holcomb was born in Pembrokeshire, Wales or Devonshire, England to Ann and Gilbert Holcomb. BIOGRAPHY: Thomas is thought to have come on the 1630 voyage of the "Mary and John", (Our Heritage Vol.III) but there is no proof of it. In March, 1630, he was in a company which assembled at Plymouth, Devonshire, where a large ship of 400 tons, chartered by Captain Squeb, for the voyage to America. It is thought that ship was the "Mary and John". On whatever ship they crossed, Thomas was in Massachusetts Bay by 4 May 1634 on which dat he became a freeman, and he is recorded as a resident of Dorchester. Refer to Internet printout for additional information. dl In the Spring of 1636, Reverend John Warham left Dorchester and came to Windsor,Connecticut, bringing his flock, including Thomas Holcomb, with him. Before leaving Dorchester Thomas sold his estate to Richad Jones (12 Aug 1635). Later, 1639, he moved to Poquonock, Hartford, CT., four miles west of Windsor, where he engaged in Farming. He was a Representative from Windsor and Hartford in the Convention that framed the now famous Constitution of the Connecticut C olony. Thomas died at Windsor. His grave is located in an old cemetary near the old homestead at Poquonock. His grave was marded by a brown stone about 2X4 feet in size. The stone, having crumbled with age, was removed. It was replaced with a new marker that was inscribed with family information, much of which is wrong. There is a story of the tombstone reported by a Mrs. Carrie Marshall Kendrick who lived on Poquonock Ave in Windsor that there was formerly a small cemetery by her house in which Thomas Holcombe was buried in Oct 1657. Members of the Holcomb family "later"removed to what is now Granby and took with them Thomas Holcomb's tombstone, if not his remains also and inserted the 1657 stone into an obelisk-type monument in the Granby Street Cemetery in Granby. Mrs. Kendrick further stated, that after C.G. Flanders reported on all the stones of that graveyard in 1934, that family members had demolished the obelisk-type monument and replaced it with a modern granite monument, and the original slab was then thrown into a dump. The inscription on the new stone is as follows: THOMAS HOLCOMB, BORN IN ENGLAND, DIED OCT. 1657 THOMAS, HIS SON, DIED 1736 ELIZABETH PETTEBONE, HIS WIFE DIED 1740 DANIEL, THEIR SON DIED 1760 ESTHER BUEL, HIS WIFE DIED 1765 DANIEL, THEIR ONLY SON, DIED OCT. 12 1836 AE 85 SARAH, HIS WIFE, DIED SEPT. 5, 1835 AE 54 HEPZIBAH GRISWOLD, HIS WIFE, DIED JULY 11, 1814 AE 33 GAYLORD G., THEIR 2ND SONE, DROWNED, JULY 4 1844 AE 50 On the reverse side under Masonic emblem: ALFRED E. HOLCOMB, AUG. 5, 1867 - SEPT.13, 1956 MABLE METCALF, HIS WIFE, NOV. 26, 1881 - MAY 7, 1956 EDMUND HOLCOMB, DIED DEC. 20, 1874 AE 74 ELIZA M., HIS WIFE, DIED SEPT. 12, 1862 AE 55 EMILY H., HIS WIFE, DIED JULY 21, 1914 AE 82 DANIEL E., ONLY CHILD OF EDMUND AND ELIZA, DIED CAROLINE H. CASE, DIED OCT. 3 1911 AE 47 The data on the north side of the stone contain a number of errors. Thomas Holcomb had no sone named Thomas, and, though C.G. Flanders must have seen a stone for the son, with the date of death, given as 1736, he shows no first name. Thomas did have a son who died in 1736, Benajah. Benajah, however, married Sarah Eno, not Elizabeth Pettebone, and though there were Holcomb-Pettebone marriages, no Elizabeth Pettebone married any Holcomb in the period. Some researchers feel that son Joshua belongs on the stone in place of non-excistant Thomas. BIOGRAPHY: His property was inventoried 1 Oct, 1657, the inventory came to 294/9/8 Pounds. The surviving children are listed with ages as Joshua (17), Benajah (13), Nathaniel (9), Abigail (19), Deborah (5-7), but this overlooks the two eldest daughters Elizabeth and Mary who were already married. See Printout for more information. dl BIOGRAPHY: 10 children of whom 3 died in childhood. There is a record which suggests there may have been an older son named John. Son Nathaniel had a son Nathaniel recorded at Springfield on 11 June 1673, but the same Vital Records attribute the birth of a daughter Sarah on 6 Oct 1673 to a John Holcum. Nothing more is known of this John, either at Springfield or Windsor. It could have been an error by the town clerk at Springfield and the surname Holcum is wrong. Some researchers think John may have gone to Virginia. BIOGRAPHY: James Eno, with his three children, came to live at the Holcomb house, after the death of his first wife, and his marriage to Elizabeth. CONFLICT: http://claim.goldrush.com/~humbert lists Adm.Essex Holcombe and John Holcombe along with children of Thomas as generation 16. Who are they? dl CONFLICT: Beckler lists birth place as England.
