    (*) The will of WM. BALL, dat. Aug. 14, 1744, pro. Lanc'r Co. Mar. 8, 1744-5, entails his land in five sections to his eight male heirs, making the will too lengthy to be copied in full. 1. To his gr. son, Wm. Ball, his Lanc'r Co. lands on which the testator then lived, and his male heirs, for want of which successively by entail to his gr. son, Williamson Ball, son of Wm., dec'd; gr. son, Benjamin Ball, gr. son, Richard Ball, gr. son, William Ball, son of George; gr. son, George Ball; failing all of which, to his heirs at law. 2. (+) Glasscock. An English name of antiquity. If the threadbare tradition of the "three brothers" is correct, there is another family of this name in Va., which descended from "three brothers of the name who came from France with La Fayette, fought through the Revolution with him, and located in Va., married and raised families on the James River." (Power's Sangamon Co., Ill, p. 331.) Lieut. Thomas Glasscock of Va. served in the Continental Line. George Glasscock was foreman of the Grand Jury, Rich'd Co., Nov. 5, 1739, which presented Rev. Thos. Blewitt for "swearing and being Drunk." Bishop M. names the Glasscock family as among the prominent ones in Richmond Co. from 1692 to 1775. (v. also BALL 32 and 101.) Robert Glasscock rec'd 200 ??. Eliz. Co., next to Cheeseman's land, 1635.

    Notes:

    According to the author of Virginia Roots: "Nicholas' wife was claimed to be Mary Travers, daughter of Rawleigh and Hannah Travers who he married 5 May 1654 in Essex, Virginia, British Colonial America. According to "Hale/Haile/Heal genealogy, the biographical information of Nicholas Hale indicated that he and his wife only had 3 children. However, "Nicholas Hale, no doubt had several sons in addition to Nicholas, Jr. However, the births of of the older children are listed in the local parish records and marriage dates are, of course unavailable on those who had already moved west." Yet in addition to George, his sons appear to have been: John, who with George when he was laying out the town of Lancaster in 1682; Francis; Joseph; Richard and Nicholas or others who spread among the Tidewater counties of the Chesapeake."
    __________________________________________________

    The father of George Hale, Sr. of Lancaster was Nicholas Hale, the immigrant, who came to Elizabeth City County, Virginia, in 1645. He had a plantation in York County in 1648 and acquired large holdings in Lancaster County following its formation 1651.
    Nicholas Hale was living on his plantation in York County, but he moved to Lancaster County in 1655 and was living there as late as 1663. His sons, in addition to George, appear to have been: John, who with George was paid for laying out the town of Lancaster in 1682; Francis; Joseph; Richard; Nicholas; and possibly others, who spread among the Tidewater counties of the Chesapeak Bay, their descendants being legion."
    Due to the custom of primogeniture (passing property down from father to oldest son) George Heale/Haile succeeded to Nicholas' property was the eldest son.
    He married Ellen Rogers well before his 30 Dec 1697 death date. George was probably a son of Nicholas Heale/Haile of Elizabeth City, York, and Lancaster counties. The bride was a daughter of Capt. John and Ellen Rogers of North Carolina. (See Virginia, Marriages of the Northern Neck of Virginia.)
    The pedigree chart in Memories shows George Haile c1647-1697 married Ellen Rogers 1655-1710, and they were the parents of Nicholas Hale c1679-1730 who married Frances "Broad" Garrett. (Pedigree in "The Family of Cleveland Eldred Shook" by Henry Earl Close, Jr.) These relationships are also supported in "Roots in Virginia" pages 6-8.
    The source "Roots in Virginia" pages 7-8, states Nicholas Hale, Sr. of Baltimore County, Maryland married Frances "Broad" Garrett, and lists their children.
    The next paragraph states "George Hale, father of Nicholas, Sr. of Baltimore County, was a Justice in Lancaster County, Virginia, in 1684, a Burgess 1695-1697, and his will, leaving a large estate in lands, was probated January 12, 1698... George Hale and his wife, Ellen, who died in 1710, left in addition to their son had the following children:
    [1.] Nicholas, Sr., who settled in Maryland, [and married Frances "Broad" Garrett]
    [2.] Hannah, who married Col. William Ball, the third generation of a distinguished name in Virginia;
    [3.] Capt. George Hale, Justice and Sheriff of Lancaster, who married Catherine Chinn, daughter of John Chinn, and among whose children were Ellen who married David Ball and Catheirne who married John Cannaday of Maryland;
    [4.] John, a Justice of Lancaster County;
    [5.] Joseph, a Justice, whose daughter Anne married Moore Fauntleroy, son of William of Richmond County;
    [6.] Ellen;
    [7.] Elizabeth;
    [8.] Sarah, who married Newman Brockenborough of Richmond County;
    [9.] William, who married Priscilla Downman, daughter of William and Million (Travers) Downman, and granddaughter of Col. Rawleigh Travers...
    This was George. He expanded his father's holdings along the Corotoman and served as Justice in Lancaster County during the 1680s and '90s. He married the daughter of a Captain John Rogers. They had three children: George, Nicholas a.
    In 1654, when he gave a power of Attorney to Dr. Thomas Roots of Lancaster County, Nicholas Hale was living on his plantation in York County, but he moved to Lancaster County in 1655 and was living there as late as 1663. His sons, in addition to George, appear to have been: John, who with George was paid for laying out the town of Lancaster in 1682; Francis; Joseph; Richard; Nicholas; and possibly others, who spread among the Tidewater counties of the Chesapeake Bay, their descendants being legion."

    Notes:

    William Ball was born in 1615, studied law in London and served in the Royal Army in the Civil Wars under Charles I. With the regicide in 1650, he lost the greater part of his English estates and fled to Virginia. He had married Hannah Atherall (Atherold) 2 July 1638 in London and immigrated to Virginia with his wife and three children--Hannah, Joseph, and William. He did not apply for a land grant in Virginia for eight years, waiting for the restoration of the 1660 Stuart kings. He settled in Narrow Neck (now Ball Point) on the west side of the Corrotoman River in 1663. Ball operated the vessel Merchant between England and Virginia as a tobacco merchant. He acquired 2000 acres in Virginia, served on an Indian peace-treaty council, and administered Lancaster County affairs as a Colonel. He built a Georgian mansion, Millenbeck, and led the defense of the county to help quell Bacon's Rebellion. One of his land grants for 300 acres adjoined the land of Daniel Fox, who married his daughter Hannah. He was a Warden of Christ Church in Lancaster and also owned land in Rappahannock County. He served as a Burgess from 1699-1173 and was George Washington's great grandfather. ? He died at Millenbeck in 1680 and left his estate to his wife and two sons.

    THE BALL FAMILY FROM THE MT. VERNON LIBRARY:
    The Ball family line connects to George Washington through his maternal lineage. The first member of the Ball family to come to America was George Washington's great-grandfather, William Ball (1615- c.1680).
    In Virginia, Ball began acquiring land, engaging in commerce, and taking part in colonial politics. He served as a major in the militia of Lancaster County, Virginia, and as a member of the House of Burgesses from 1668 until 1676 and again from 1676 to 1677. During this time period, Ball had dealings with John Washington, George Washington's paternal great-grandfather.
    The four children of William Ball and Hannah Atherold were Richard Ball (died in Maryland in 1677), William Ball (II) of Virginia, Hannah Ball (later the wife of Colonel David Fox, and Joseph Ball (1649-1711). ========================================================
    WILLIAM BALL IMMIGRATION RECORDS FROM LANCASTER COUNTY:
    William's earliest immigration date was recorded in Lancaster County, VA-24 OCT 1653. Certificate granted to Capt. Henry Fleet for importation of 21 people, including William Ball. (DB 1, p. 89)
    Lancaster County, VA-19 MAY 1657. Certifcate for land issued to William Ball for transporting himself four times and for transporting Hugh Davys and Richard Ball once. (Orders 1656-1666, p. 16, Sparacio, p. 10).
    Lancaster County, VA-2 JUN 1657. Land Patent to Domick Theriott of Lancaster County, land on Clapham's Creek and adjacent to Edwin Conway, due for importation of 32 persons, including William Ball four times and Richard Ball. (PB 4, p. 102.) These were probably some of the same headrights named in the certificate issued to William Ball above, and apparently sold by William Ball to Domick Theriott.

    Immigrated in April 1635 from England to Virginia in the ship "Planter". {Must have returned to England} Evidence shows that he married (in London, England) 2 July 1638 to Hannah Atherold. He was a soldier "under Fairfax", and served in the Royal Army and took part in the {English} Civil Wars, remaining true to the royal standards & serving faithfully under the banners of the ill-fated King Charles. When the Royal Army was defeated, Colonel Ball lost the greater part of his considerable estates. In company with other royalists he fled to Virginia, the most loyal of the king's possessions, and last to surrender to Cromwell's authority. [SOURCE: Larry Chesebro']

    Notes:

    Nicholas Haile was born about 1630 in England, either Kent or Herfordshire. [1] He was transported to Virginia before 1645. His name as a "transportee" was used to acquire grants of land in early Virginia by at least three different persons. He had sufficient funds to purchase in 1652 an interest in a large tract of land which he patented in subsequent years. Nicholas also transported to Virginia at his own expense as many as a dozen bonded servants which he used to obtain land patents. [2]
    Nicholas' wife was claimed to be Mary Travers. Mary Hale was listed in the debts for the estate of Rawleigh Travers.
    Nicholas died in Virginia before November 8, 1671 when records show Mary Haile as executrix for the estate of Nicholas Haile, her husband, deceased. He died intestate so only the administration of his estate is available.According to Hale/Haile/Heal Genealogy Biographical Info On Nicholas Hale known as the 1st born 1628 in England he and his wife had only 3 children. BUT maybe there were others?

    June 1, 1657 - Patented 500 acres, Lancaster Co., Virginia
    May 18, 1666 - Renewed patent plus 238 acres

    This surname is of English origin, belonging to the group of landscape names. It first identified the dweller in a nook or corner of a valley. The word is derived from "halgh", a term applied to low, level lands washed by a river or sea. Some sources believe that the hale surname may also have come from a hall, or someone who lived near a great hall. Some prominent Hales include Nathaniel Hale and many other early colonists. The first Hales in America spelled the name Heale and it was pronounced Hale, the spelling changed over around 1775.

    Nicolas Heale was the founder of this family in America. Presumably a native of England, he appears in York County, Virginia in 1654 and may have been there a few years earlier. Nicholas Heale was granted land in Lancaster County on June 1, 1657 and again on May 18, 1666 and made his home there. The name of his wife and the date of his death are not known.

    He came to Elizabeth City Co in 1645. He purchased 100 acres in York Co VA in 1648, then moved to Lancaster Co. VA in 1654, purchasing around 1500 acres, including 500 acres on Corrotoman Run in 1657.
