"Here lyeth the body of Elizabeth Daughter of Humphrey Pope, gent by Elizabeth Hawkins, first the wife of William Payne gent to whom she bore two sons & two daughters & also was married to Daniel McCarty, Esq. to whom she was married 19th October 1699. She bore four sons & four daughters, totaling 8 children. Barbara 30th November 1700, Katherine 7th November 1703, Dennis March 1705, Daniel 1707, Billington 1709, Winifred 1709, Sarah 1710, Thaddeus 1712. She was born 25th June 1677 departed this life 21st March & was entombed 23rd March 1716 in the 39th year of her life."

Many have listed Humphrey Pope as the son of Col. Nathaniel Pope. Careful research reveals that this is NOT true, although there are likely connections between the two men. Humphrey Pope is probably a younger relative (perhaps a nephew or cousin) of Col. Nathaniel Pope.

Humphrey Pope was brought over from England by Thomas Pope and John Washington as a minor.

He was transported by Thomas Pope of Bristol, England and of Westmoreland,Virginia, son of Colonel Nathaniel Pope and by John Washington of Westmoreland,Virginia, to Virginia in 1661 when he was about 12 years old.

By DNA testing my Moses Cushenberry matches with the male testers that can prove their lineage back to John Quisenberry, the immigrant, that married Anne Pope , dau of Humphrey Pope and Elizabeth Hawkins.

Humphrey married Elizabeth HAWKINS in 1667 in Westmoreland County, Virginia. Elizabeth (daughter of Richard HAWKINS and Elizabeth DRAKE) was born on 18 Oct 1635 in Slapton, South Hams District, Devon, England; died on 14 Aug 1718 in Washington Magisterial District, Westmoreland, Virginia, British Colonial America; was buried in 1717 in , Westmoreland, Virginia. Elizabeth Hawkins is the only proven child of Robert Hawkins.

Robert Hawkins married a woman named Katherine, who may have been a Willowby.

He is NOT the same Robert Hawkins who married Grace Cutland.

The published works on this family are in error, and much recent scholarship has been done on this family which has revealed the facts of the matter with documentation.

Richard, the second son of Admiral Sir Richard Hawkins, according to his father's will, inherited Pryvitt, in Alverstoke, Southampton ; but lived at
Slapton.

He married Elizabeth by whom he had :

Elizabeth, baptized October 18th, 1635.
Nicholas, March 31st, 1639.
Jeremiah, June 12th, 1642

All baptized at Slapton as the children of Richard Hawkins and Elizabeth his wife.

Elizabeth, the wife of Richard Hawkins, was buried at Slapton, January 27th, 1666.

Richard Hawkins was buried at Slapton, November 22nd, 1667

No mention of a 1st wife or any other children.

Find a Grave story adds a 1st wife and many other children. Plymouth Armada Heroes - written in 1888 was MUCH closer to the time and place for actual information. <<<
