BIOGRAPHY: Sgt. John owned a lot of land and property as noted in the many deeds and bequests of land granted him. The oldest record book in Simsbury, called the Red Book, notes that on 9 Jan 1693, land was deeded to John, on the east side of the river toward Weatogue, which was the home site of his father. On the 25th of Feb 1683, he received land west of this lot, and on the 16 Dec 1685, he received 6 or 7 acres at 'hoppe brook'. On the 20th of Dec 1693, a strip of land about 20 acres along the side of his property was deeded to him by the inhabitants of Simsbury. John was named 'vence viewer', 22 Nov, 1682 and in 1684, along with John Moses and again named to this post 1694/95. In 1685 Joshua Holcomb and John Slater with John Humphrey were named to 'run the town bounds'. His estate was assessed at his death at 24.5 pounds, with 15 acres of land, cattle, corn, 3 guns, pistol and holbard, which was inventoried 14 Jan 1697/98 by his son John II and his brother Lt. If dead I shall entreat the pity to whom this may belong to return me an answer if by any means possible, that so I may know how passages dust go with you or any whom it may concern. And indeed I have a long time waited upon the most high God, how he hath pleased through the riches of his mercy to declare his love unto me being a nothing creature. I must say as the Psalmist doth, Oh the depth of the love of God bestowed upon me a nothing creature. I have found the goodness of God working abundantly for an through the riches of his mercy toward me. Oh the fullness of joy and sweetness is found by me in the Lord Jesus. I do speak unto Thee even this language, come my son come my dear be not dishearted tis he that worketh in us both the will and the dead. God from the scripture speaks unto us in this language and declare himself as followth I am God I change not. I am Alpha and Omega, the beginning and the end. I am God and change not. Humphrey M.D. Boston Mass 13 July 1868 BIOGRAPHY: Bir-Mar-Ord; FGR Film # 1274379 and #261240 MATTHEW GRANT, WILLIAM BUELL, MICHAEL HUMPHREYS, SIMON MILLS, AND JOHN CASE On March 20, 1630, a ship called the "Mary and John" sailed from Plymouth, England, bearing 140 persons bound for New England in the American colonies. On May 30, they anchored in New England at the harbor of Nantasket (now Hull), Massachusetts. Among these passengers was a young man named Matthew Grant. The "Mary and John"'s passengers stayed briefly at the nearby town of Dorchester, Massachusetts. In September 1633, some of them set sail again, down the New England Coast to a site where a scouting colony had designed a section of land for a new town of Windsor, Connecticut. In the coming months, Matthew Grant, like other members of the "Mary and John"'s party and some other colonists, made the short voyage to help establish Windsor. In 1635 Windsor's settlers began dividing the land into lots for distribution among the town's founders. As a professional serveyor, Matthew Grant was closely involved in this process. Michael Humphreys, was a pitch-and-tar manufacturer who received land title in 1647, the same year he married Matthew Grant's daughter Priscilla. In the 1660's, a major dispute wracked the Windsor Community Church (and other churches across New England). Most New England churches, including Windsor's, were governed by townsmen with strict Puritan inclinations. As immigration in the region grew, increasing numbers of settlers arrived who were more sympathetic to the established Church of England than to Puritan beliefs. Legally, these non-Puritan settlers had little choice other than to attend the Puritan worship services and to pay taxes to support the church and the pastor's family. The non-Puritan settlers began to insist that the laws governing church membership and support be modified to reflect the changing mix of Windsor's residents. Michael Humphreys was particularly outspoken on this point, even standing trial in local court for his challenge to the community church. By 1669, he had had enough. He left Windsor to helped establish the nearby settlement of Simsbury. Also among our Windsor ancestors to move to Simsbury were John Case and Simon Mills, Jr., the son of the early settler of Windsor, and his wife Mary Buell, the daughter of William Buell. I refer to the Matthew Grant born 1601 in Dorset and who with his wife Priscilla emigrated from Plymouth to Dorchester,MA on the ship Mary and John, and who was one of the founders of Windsor,CT, His father,John Grant, b.1574(wife Alice Turberville of Woolbridge,Dorset) was the son of George Grant,son of John Grant and Jane Belford who married in Roxby in 1570. This information was reported at the 6th reunion of the Grant Family Association in NY City in 1914. This family traces back in Roxby,Yorkshire to one William Graunt living in the middle of the 15th century. there is question as to the location of Roxby, whether in Yorkshire or Lincolnshire. There is a Roxby,Lincolnshire located nine miles SW of Barton-on-Humber,Yorkshire. Lord Strathspey's book on the History of Clan Grant traces the Chiefs of the Clan back to Sir Laurence Le Grant(1258-1266) , son of William and Aldreda, who was sheriff of Inverness in 1263. A history of the Grants by Archie McKerracher traces the surname of Grant to a Norman knight,Le Grant who came to England with William the Conqueror in 1066. His descendent, William Le Grant, held lands in Nottinghamshire(near Lincolnshire and Yorkshire,England) through his wife Aldreda who was a member of the Bissett family who had been granted land around Stratherick and Beauly in the Moray Firth area of Scotland. An article by Maran McCormick also states the Anglo-Norman origin and that William and Alfreda Bissett Grant held manor of East Bridgeford in Nottinghamshire, England. This account also states that there is a claim to descent from Kenneth MacAlpine,King of Scotland in the 9th century. Many of our clan members who trace their families back to England are wondering about their ties to Scotland. In many cases scots moved down to England,particularly Yorkshire, for economic reasons as this was one of the centers of the woolen trade. It might also be that this family might be descended from the Le Grants who settled in this corner of the Midlands of England and would be related very distantly to the Grants in Scotland. In either case I feel that if one were able to trace far enough on the Yorkshire Grants(which I feel has already been done to the best of anyone's ability) they would find that either of the above reasons would be valid. BIOGRAPHY: Most information on Matthew is from the Grant Family History On March 20, 1630 he embarked with his family, on the "Mary and John" at Plymouth England, they reached Boston Harbor May 30, 1630. The family settled at Dorchester, Massachusetts and he was admitted a freeman May 18, 1631 but with many others, he disliked the close union of church and state that characterized the colony of Massachusetts Bay, as well as the growing tendency to establish the government in the hands of a privileged class, and to minimize the voice of the people in the conduct of their own affairs. Accordingly, in October 1635 he went overland to the Connecticut River with the party that prepared for the settlement of Windsor, his family probably did not go at that time but joined him the following April. There freed from the tramma of a royal charter, he assisted in forming a true democracy, the germ from which American political institutions have grown. His claim was in the Palasades next to the town lot. This he gave to his son John with whom he spent his declining years. It is said he was a carpenter. He was the first and for many years the principal surveyed; deacon of the first church; recorder, (town clerk) 1652-57 townsman, (selectman) many years, frequently receiving the highest number of votes; on the committee to lay out the bounds between Windsor and Hartford in 1651 and 1660, and to view the state of the town in 1651 and 1654 The absence of records makes it impossible to give a complete list of the many offices he held, but he was one of the important men of the town. Of him Dr. Stiles says in his History of Ancient Windsor: "Few men indeed filled so large a place in the early history of Windsor, or filled it so well as honest Matthew Grant; His name figures in almost every place of trust and the early records of the town show that his duties were always conscientiously performed" In 1654 he compiled "A Book of Records of Town Ways in Windsor" He was also the compiler of the " Old Church Record " which has furnished the basis for the histories of most of the families of ancient Windsor. He was the type of the best settlers of New England and left to his descendants an untarnished name, and the example of an unswerving fidelity to the public trusts committed to him, for he quaintly comments on his own work " I have been careful to do nothing on one man's desire. Indeed, Matthew Grant was one of the most influential persons involved in the establishment of Windsor. In addition to being the town's surveyor for several years, he served as its Town Clerk for some terms.
