CONFLICT: Birth 1601, St. Albans, Hertfordshire, England., Death: 16 jun 1636, Hartford, Ct., Marriage abt 1629, Windsor CT/ or England. Hum3.paf BIOGRAPHY: The first specific allusion to William Wilcoxson in either English or American records, is to be found in Hotten's "Original Lists of persons emigrating to America prior to 1700". There we find that William Wilcoxson, age 34, together with his wife Margaret, age 24,and their infant son John, age 2, sailed from London on the ship, Planter, April 5, 1635. The vessel arrived at Boston, May 26th of the same year and we have the word of 'Orcutt', "History of Stratford and Bridgeport", that his first American home was at Concord, MA. When they appeared at Stratford in 1639 the family was composed of the father, mother and three small children. From this we know that the children were born in Concord. He had arrived from England May 26, 1635 and his very first American home was at Concord, MA. He lived there for four years. The children born here were Joseph and Timothy. At the very beginning of its settlement, Stratford was called Pequennocke, then changed to Cupheag Plantation and then to Stratford. The earliest map of Stratford (as it was in 1639) shows seventeen families living there. This map shows William Wilcoxson's lot in the central part of the "town". On one side of it was the lot of William Beardsley and on the other that of John Peat. Here six more children were born to William and Margaret. Their entire family comprised nine children, all of whom lived to adulthood, married and had families of their own. William Wilcoxson was selected to serve his town as Deputy in the Connecticut Assembly and was on intimate terms with Governors Winthrop and Bulkley. William Wilcoxson died early in the year 1652. This we know from the fact that there is record of the inventory of his will on June 16th, 1652. All his children were still under age, with John, the oldest was but 19, and Phoebe yet a babe in arms. Margaret evidently remarried in 1663 (11 years later) to William Hayden, an immigrant of 1630. By this time John, Joseph, Timothy and Elizabeth had married. William Hayden had removed to Killingworth with his three motherless children and there he was joined by Margaret and the younger Wilcoxson children. John and Timothy remained with their families in Stratford, Elizabeth moved with her husband, Sergeant Henry Stiles, to Windsor. Joseph, already the father of three children, followed his mother to Killingworth and settled there permanently. Samuel married the following year, thus did not live long at Killingworth. The younger chjildren who accompanied their mother to Killingworth were Hannah (who became the bride of her step brother Daniel Hayden), Sarah, Obadiah and Phoebe. Savage corroberates the names of the children of William and Margaret. The name of this line was originally Wilcoxson, but the last syllable was generally dropped about the middle of the eighteenth century. From "Abner Wilcox & Lucy Eliza Hart Wilcox" the fact that just because the passengers of the Planter embarked with a blanket certificate from the minister of St. Albans, Hertfordshire, there is no reason to believe that William lived there. The records of the shire do not contain his name, and he was more likely from Derbyshire, the town of Biggin. If so, his father could have been the William Wilcoxson who married Anne Howdische 2/8/1575. Since William was a linen weaver, and Biggin was an area where flax was grown and woven into cloth, there is credibility to this theory.

William married Margaret BIRDSEYE in 1632 in France. Margaret (daughter of John (William) BIRDSEYE and Elizabeth ANDREWS) was born in 1611 in St. Alban's, Hertfordshire, England; died in Jul 1655 in Stratford, Fairfield County, Connecticut; was buried in Jul 1655. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

    Notes:

She was 24 years old when she arrived in America with her husband in 1636. Per Norman Parker (Wilcoxon): After his [William WILCOXSON's] death, his widow married William Hayden of Windsor. She died in 1655." This, however, is not in accord with Savage (ii, 387), who says that "His [William HAYDEN's] w. d. at Windsor, 1655; and he m. 2d Margaret, wid. of William Wilcockson, " and Wilcox (1938, p. 18) who says she was alive at the time William Wilcoxson's heirs made an agreement together on 22 OCT 1668. Per Thomas Wilcox (p. xix): "... the legend, as given in 'Records of the CT Line of the Hayden Family', is to the effect that Margaret married William Hayden sometime in the year 1663. The latter had then removed from Windsor to Hamonoscett (later Kenilworth, Killingworth and finally Clinton) with his three motherless children and there he was joined by Margaret and the younger Wilcoxson children. By that time John, Joseph, Timothy and Elizabeth were already married." Per Wilcox (1938, p. 23), Winthrop says she was living in Windsor in 1660 and the wife of William Hayden. Per Thomas Wilcox (p. xix): "Margaret ... died at Killingworth in 1675." Per Bergetta Monroe (20 SEP 1995, citing Monroe, Paul; My Monroe Family [1966]): "He married Margaret , said to be a BIRDSEYE of Stratford. ... Margaret was born the second month of 1611/1 and died in 1651 at Bridgewater, CT." SOURCES:YOB: Ancestral File ver. 4.14 (code AFN: 9J6F-QL).YOD: Wilcox, Thomas (1963), p. xix. Other Events:

    • Name: William Thrall The EMIGRANT
    • _UID: 02CFD3359A7F4C54BB77666014AC6CF2A890

    Notes:

William Thrall is the founder of the Thrall family in the United States. He was born in 1605 in Sandridge, Hertfordshire, England and came to the Colonies on the "Mary and John" in the year 1630. The "Mary and John" was a vessel of four hundred tons captained by a man named Squeb and the vessel sailed with 180 passengers.
William was part of a company of Puritans under the leadership of Rev. John Wareham of Exeter and Rev. John Meverick, both ministers of the Church of England Setting sail from Plymouth, England on 20 March, they first came ashore on 30 May 1630. They disembarked with what goods they had, to some high land in the salt meadow, now a part of the city of Boston. They named the place Dorchester, which was selected by the captain of the "Mary and John" as he came from Dorchester, England. Page 277 of Prince's Chronology of New England records "May 30, Lord's Day. Mr. Wareham and his church, and their goods, were put ashore at Nantasket Point. The went immediately to Charlestown, and from thence to Mattepan, and began a town and named it Dorchester, and the native Indians were kind to them."
Revs. Wareham and Meverick and their group stayed in Dorchester less than five years, as a number of their menfolk had discovered more fertile land below the first falls of the Connecticut River, at the junction of the Farmington River just above Hartford. Part of the Colony went by boat and the remainder traveled across the one hundred miles of virgin forest, to establish the town of Windsor. Windsor was unofficially known as Thrallville in the early years.
The first we know of William Thrall is that he is listed with the following men who were among the thirty men who went from Windsor to join in the fight against the Pequod Indians in May 1637. Capt. John Mason, Sgt. Benedict Alvord, Thomas Barber, Thomas Buckland, George Chappel, John Dyer, James Eggleston, Nathaniel Gillet, Thomas Gridley, Thomas Styles, Sgt. Thomas Stares, Richard Osborn, Thomas Parsons, William Thrall. The Indian village in this case was so completely destroyed that for many years, the settlers had no further trouble with the Indians. Some years later, the participants were given land grants. To quote from Dr. Styles records with regard to the first Indian war in New England, "The danger was imminent, and so complete the victory that it caused universal rejoicing throughout New England, and a grant of land was given each soldier and officer, and to this day the memory of an ancestor who was in the Pequod fight, is an honorable heirloom in every Connecticut family".
William Thrall is mentioned many times in the early records. His lot shows up in the first plot of Windsor, between the lots of Nicholas Palmer and Thomas Bascomb, and ran from the road to the Farmington River. In 1646, William sold this lot to Nicholas Palmer and moved to Simon Hoyte's place, north of the village. Robert Wilson bought a half interest with William in the Hoyte's 80 acres, but sold his half to Thrall in 1654. This 80 acres has been part of the holdings of the Thrall family ever since, thanks to William Thrall's will
We know very little about the wife of William Thrall. She is referred to in the Old Windsor records as Goode Thrall, but "Goode" was an expression applied to women with families and it is simply an abbreviation of "Goodwife". Whether she came over to New England on the "Mary and John" with her husband or they met in Dorchester, has never been established The record of her death simply states, "Goode Thrall, wife of William, died 30 July 1676".

William married Elizabeth GOODE in 1632 in Windsor, Hartford County, Connecticut. Elizabeth was born about 1609 in France; died on 30 Jul 1676 in Windsor, Hartford County, Connecticut. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]
