    Biography
Sir RICHARD CHAMPERNOUN. Died shortly before 26 Nov 1338 when Bishop Grandisson recorded the testamentary probate of Lord Richard de Campo Arnulphi, Knight (Grandisson: 894). The will itself was not recorded in the register and is now lost. In 1285, by the commandment of Edward I, James de Okeston conveyed Modbury to him. On 13 Apr 1315, a plea of covenant was summoned wherein James de Oxton acknowledged the manor and advowson of Brideford (Bridford) to be the right of Richard as by James's gift, to be held by James for his life upon payment of a yearly rose, and after his death the manor and advowson would revert in its entirety to Richard. On 20 Jan 1315/6, James de Oxton and Ida, his wife, acknowledged the manor of Modbury and advowson and priory of Modbury to be the right of Henry de Lappeslode as by James' gift, that Henry granted the manor and advowson to James and Ida for their lives, and after their deaths, the manor and advowson shall remain in their entirety to Richard de Campo Arnulphi and his heirs.

On 25 Sept 1319 he received a grant, at the request of Edmund de Woodstock, the King's brother, for a weekly market on Tuesday at his manor of Inneswerk, co. Cornwall, and a yearly fair there on the vigil, the feast and morrow of St. Michael. Knight of the Shire for Devon Oct 1324 and Sept 1331. On 7 July 1324 he was a knight liable for military service against the Scots. On 28 Aug 1325, he was commissioned to pursue and arrest disturbers of the peace and on 28 Feb 1326 was appointed a commissioner of the peace in co. Cornwall. On 20 Mar 1326, he was appointed arrayer for co. Cornwall. In 1332, he was holding lands in Brixton, Compton and Egg Buckland, Highampton, North Buckland, and Modbury. Holding Modbury of John de Dynham, 20 June 1332.

On 1 June 1334 he received license to crenelate Modbury Manor and on 1 Feb 1335, he received a grant, of special grace, of free warren in all their demesne lands of Modbury, co. Devon and Inneswerk and Ledeweyn, co. Cornwall.

    Notes:

Modbury origins go back to Saxon times though nowadays most of the houses lining the steep main street are 18th or 19th century formerly the homes of prosperous wool merchants. During the reign of King Stephen of 'nineteen long winters', a Priory was founded in Modbury for Benedictines but was dissolved in the time of Henry VI. St. George's Church, Modbury, is rather unusual for the county of Devon in that it has a Medieval spire. It contains mutilated effigies of the Prideaux family in the north transept. Within the south transept are the Champernowne effigies; it was Sir Richard Champernowne whose family resided at Modbury House, living in great splendour till the end of the seventeenth century. The building was castellated in 1334 by royal license, but all was taken down in 1705 except a small portion which consisted of a stable and hay loft. It is said the family kept a very fine band of singers and musicians in the reign of Queen Elizabeth and several of the family were knighted for military services.

    GENERATION 1

    1. Sir RICHARD CHAMPERNOUN, of Modbury, Devonshire. As "Richard de Chambernon, son of Dom Henry de Chamb'noun," he terminated a Plea brought by him in City Court against Master Henry de Bollegh, Archdeacon of Cornwall, 4 Oct 1286 (DCNQ, 8: 132). In 1275/82, as Ricardus de Chambernun, he was recorded as a tenant of the manor of Inswork (Book of Fees, II, p. 1298).

Married to Joan, half-sister of James de Okeston, of Modbury. Sir James de Okeston presented to Modbury Priory Sept 1321 (Stapledon, p. 235). It has been suggested that Joan had remarried by 1300, in which year Peter de Fissacre was holding Inceworth, as per the IPM of Edmund, Earl of Cornwall, and that Joan, wife of Peter de Fissacre, put in a claim in 1316, endorsed on the final concord of Modbury (RTDA, 67: 269-270, 280-282). Joan apparently died soon after as in 1319 her son Richard was holding Inceworth.

    Notes:

Sir HENRY de CAMPO ARNULPHI (CHAMBERNUN). Still a minor in 1242/3 when the lands of his late father were noted as being held by his heirs. Henry de Chambernun and Dionisia, his wife, were named in a land warranty of 6 June 1249. On 9 Dec 1262, he was holder of the "Court of Henry and his heirs at Alfricumb" (Ilfracombe) where Henry himself was a plaintiff. On 24 Nov 1265, a mandate was issued to Henry de Chaumbren to deliver the castle to Ralph de Gorges. On 16 Feb 1270, in a fine between Henry de Chaumbernun, claimant and Hugh de Treverbyn, deforciant, regarding the manors of Trevolonan, Tywardrayth, Ludevon (Ludgvan) and Penalym (Penhallyn in Jacobstow), Hugh acknowledged the manors that Henry held by gift of Isolda de Cardinham. As Lord of Ilfracombe, he presented there to the church in June 1263, June 1272, and Dec 1276; as Lord of Jacobstowe, Cornwall he presented there to the church in June 1270, then being called a knight, and in Sept 1272. As Lord of Coryton (Curitone) he presented there to the church in Sept 1279. On 22 April 1279 he was given a grant of a weekly market and a yearly fair at his manor of Ilfracombe. On 5 July 1277 he had protection going to Wales on the King's service and was last recorded as justice of the gaol delivery at Oxford and Exeter in May and July 1281.

Vivian states he married Dionisia, daughter of Gilbert and sister and coheiress of Sir Robert English or Engloiz, of Stokeley. He was certainly married to a Dionisia by June 1249 who survived her husband as Dame Dionisia de Campo Arnulphi when, in March 1284, she presented Oliver de Campo Arnulphi, subdeacon, presumably their son, as rector of Jacobstowe.

Stockeley-Engles (Stockleigh-English) was in possession of her grandson, Henry, who presented to the church in April 1312.

    Children:
1.) Sir William de Champernoun, m. Joan.

2.) Sir Richard de Champernoun, m. Joan. See CHAMPERNOUN OF MODBURY.

3.) Oliver de Champernoun. As a subdeacon, he was presented as rector of Jacobstowe, co. Cornwall by Dame Dionisia de Campo Arnulphi in March 1284. The relationship is unstated though it seems likely Dame Dionisia was presenting one of her younger sons.

Henry married Dionisia ENGLISH before 1245 in Broadclyst, Devon, England. Dionisia (daughter of Sir Robert ENGLISH and Lady Agathe) was born in 1230 in Stockleigh Ginglish, Devon, England; died in 1284 in Umberleigh, Devonshire, England. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

  2. 9.  Dionisia ENGLISH was born in 1230 in Stockleigh Ginglish, Devon, England (daughter of Sir Robert ENGLISH and Lady Agathe); died in 1284 in Umberleigh, Devonshire, England.
