    Notes:

Sir William Harris (21 September 1556 ? 14 November 1616) was an English knight, land owner, and a notable incorporator in the third Virginia Company of London.

Sir William Harris, his brother in law, Sir Thomas Smythe and his son, Sir Arthur Harris, each, were Incorporators and Subscribers to the third charter of the Virginia Company of London, and each paid ?75 as their subscription.[12] Both Harris and Smythe were very interested in the development of Virginia. They exerted their influence to secure money, men, equipment, supplies, and ships for the colonization efforts.[13]

This Harris family appears to have originated some 40 to 50 miles (64 to 80 km) east-north-east of London and on the north bank of the River Crouch. The village of Cricksea (or Creeksea) exists today on this peninsula in Essex County. Creeksea is located about 2 miles (3 km) west of Burnham-on-the-Crouch and about 18 miles (29 km) inland from the North Sea. Anciently called "Danes Island", this area was inhabited largely by Norman families after the conquest in 1066.

Sir William Harris was knighted on 23 July 1603 at Whitehall on the eve of the coronation of James I.[2] His elevation to the knighthood was the result of military service in Ireland during the Nine Years' War along with his cousin Sir William Harris of Shenfield, Essex.[3]

To No?l J. Harris Robertson You definitely have the proof that William Harris of Southminster is the son of John Herrys of Prittlewell & not Arthur Harris who married Joan Percy. "Glenn Gohr"

More About WILLIAM HARRIS, SIR: Aka (Facts Pg): Sir William of Prittlewell Occupation: Merchant in London

Probablly never knighted. In his will he refers to himself as the Elder of Southminster parish in the County of Essex Squire and Neither does the courtindicate him either as Knight or Sir

The main records we have to rely on for William Harris of Southminster are the Visitations of Essex 1552. Essentially that information tells us the basics about the first three generations. William Harris first married Joanna Smith, had son and heir William who married Jane Semer, and who likewise had a son named William. The Visitations of Essex 1558 go on to list all three wives, all thirteen of his children, as well as a number of his grandchildren. Since he was a prominent Essex official, there are other court records that substantiate the time period in which he lived. His will in 1556 confirms five of his sons, that his last wife was named Agnes (Rutter), and lists the properties he owned. The five surviving sons that were still living in 1556 were William and Vincent by the first marriage, Arthur by the second marriage, and Christopher and Edward by the third marriage. (A full copy of the will submitted by No?l Robertson can be found in the archives of Harris-Va on Rootsweb.) Even if the Visitations of Essex are inaccurate, we know that he did have those five sons, and he names them in that order in his will. The oldest son William actually does not receive a legacy from his father in the will. Wording in the will implies that the son William Harris had already been provided for and was well established in 1556. It is stated that he had already been assigned property that was not named in the will. We do not know the location of that property.

Although there are few actual parish records for the early 1500s, we can estimate by various sources that William Harris married his first wife Johanna Smith around 1515. With thirteen children, if William Harris averaged one child every two years over all three wives, that would put the last child being born in 1541. We already know from the 1556 will that Christopher and Edward Harris were still underage in 1556 confirming that Edward, the last son, was probably not born until around 1540-1545. If William, the first son, was born shortly after the 1515 marriage, then he was just coming of age, marrying, and having his first son William in that same 1540-1545 time period. That means William Harris of Southminster had a son Edward and a grandson William who were approximately the same age.

William married Johanna COOKE in 1525 in , Southminster, Essex, England. Johanna (daughter of Unknown COOKE) was born in 1500 in Bocking, Essex, England; died about 1531 in Essex County, England. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

The details in this biography come from the History of Parliament, a biographical dictionary of Members of the House of Commons.

Born 2 Aug 1507, first son of Sir George Waldegrave of Smallbridge by Anne, dau. of Robert Drury of Hawstead; kinsman of Sir Edward Waldegrave who married Frances Neville. m. settlement 7 Jul 1528, Juliana, dau. of Sir John Raynsford of Bradfield, Essex, sister of Sir John Rainsford. Suc. family 8 Jul 1528. Kntd. 25 May 1533. J.p. Suff. ?1531, 1532-d.; commr. tenths of spiritualities 1535, coastal defence 1539, relief 1550, goods of churches and fraternities 1553; other commissions 1534-d.; sheriff, Norf. and Suff. 1550-1.

William Waldegrave was born and brought up at his maternal grandfather's house in Suffolk. The deaths within the space of 14 months of his paternal grandfather Sir William Waldegrave and his own father left him heir to one of the handsomest patrimonies at the age of a few weeks short of 21. The marriage contracted for him by his father while dying strengthened his connexions in the region and added to his property. From thenceforward he combined local administration with attendance at court and military service. Knighted at the coronation of Anne Boleyn he headed the commission to take the oath of succession in Suffolk. In the autumn of 1536 he was one of a group of men who Thomas Howard, 3rd Duke of Norfolk, believed would quell any rising in Suffolk. Two years later he approached Cromwell about help in obtaining an unspecified reward from Henry VIII, but nothing came of this, perhaps because later in the same year he told the minister about his troubled conscience over enforcing the injunctions for divine service to be said in English. Nothwithstanding his 'great heartburning' he remained on the bench and in 1539 he was ordered to attend the reception of Anne of Cleves.

In 1542 Waldegrave served under the Duke of Norfolk's command against the Scots and two years later he captained 60 of his own men in the French campaign. His election to the Parliament of 1545 reflected this recent military experience as much as his own standing in Suffolk and may have been promoted by his uncle Sir William Drury as sheriff. Of his part in the Parliament nothing has come to light but during the prorogation he was present at the reception of the Admiral of France at Greenwich. Although he was not to be re-elected, early in Jan 1553 the Council considered him for nomination with Sir William Drury as knights for Suffolk in the forthcoming Parliament but in the event nominated Sir Henry Bedingfield with Drury. Following Edward VI's death in the summer Cecil listed Waldegrave among potential supporters of Lady Jane Grey but on being summoned to Kenninghall by Mary on 8 Jul he joined the princess in her successful bid for the throne. Later he heard the indictments in Suffolk against Jane's adherents.

While on a visit to Calais late in 1554, perhaps in connexion with the arrival of Cardinal Pole, Waldegrave fell sick. By his will made on 8 Nov he asked to be buried in the graveyard of St. Mary's church there, provided for his wife and children and remembered his mother and other kin. He died on the following 12 Dec, and the will was proved by the executors in Oct 1555 a week before they renounced the administration in favour of the widow. A monument to his memory was placed in Bures church near the tombs of his ancestors and an inscription in the church of St. Mary, Sudbury.

Daughter and heiress of Sir John Raynsford of Bradfield, Essex and his second wife, Margaret Ilam. Documents made in her lifetime show she is NOT part of Great Tew Raynsfords.

On 12 September 1521, in their father's will, Sir John Raynsford, knight, she is to receive an inheritance at age 20. Receives dowry of ?200, rents of designated properties, and all plates not otherwise bequeathed. Sir John also leaves money to church at Bradfield, showing Juliana is affiliated with Essex, not Oxford, Raynsfords. PCC 11/20/79
