    Notes:

Moses and Micah Mudge were the two sons of Jarvis Mudge. Their dates of birth and the name of their mother is contested.
Accoridng to one popular theory, recounted by a couple of 19th century family genalogies, there were both born to Rebecca [unknown] between the time of her marriage to Jarvis in 1649 and Jarvis's death in 1653. This theory is challenged by three facts: a) Moses and Micah were not mentioned in Hartford court documents recording the conviction and execution for witchcraft of Rebecca and Nathaniel Greensmith -- only the names of Rebecca's 2 daughters by her first marriage to Abraham Elsing; b) A 1681 document recorded by an Oyster Bay court (see source for that year) says that Moses was 41 years old at the time -- giving him a birth year 9 years before Jarvis married Rebecca; c) From the will of George Steele, Moses and Micah appear to have been his grandchildren -- but there is no source to suggest that George Steele had a daughter named Rebecca.

For these reasons, the theory which is now favored by genealogists is that Moses and Mican where children from a previous marriage of Jarvis Mudge -- to Mary Steele. This theory overlooks a) the likelihood that Rebecca's relatives would not want to be mentioned in court documents and might thus make alternative arrangements for raising Moses and Micah; b) 19th centry genealogies suggest that Moses and Mican were born to Rebecca in 1650 and 1652 respectively.
p entd. in Oyster Bay about 1729.

Moses Mudge lived his adult life in Oyster Bay, New Yorrk. His name appears numberous times in Oyster Bay town records (see source for 1681). One 19th century genealogical history says that he appeared as a witness in 1664. This sources is sometime cited as documentaiton of his age of 13 at the time. A 13 year old witness? Until that source can be reviewed, it seems best to assume that the source itself makes no mention of his age or year of birth (that these were presumed by the 19th century author).

Moses was a shoemaker. Feb. 19, 1690. He was commissioned Lieutenant of Oyster Bay Company, Queens Co.

    Biography
Mary Steele was bp. Fairstead 7 May 1620, d/o George Steele. Generally it has been accepted that there was no further record of Mary Steele.[1]

A 2006 article[2] names Mary as the probable Steele daughter who married Jarvis Mudge. Daughter Margery (bpt. 1612) would be the other choice but chronologically Mary fits better.

An alternate explanation is that the George Steele daughter who married Jarvis Mudge was Rebecca, relict of Abraham Elsen, later married to Nathaniel Greensmith, except that George Steele did not mention a daughter Rebecca in his will.

Martha Hannison was called granddaughter and Micah and Moses Mudge were named in George Steele's 1663 will, but a relationship was not named for the boys. The boys place in the will indicates they may also be grandchildren. It was speculated that Hannison was the married name of the granddaughter Martha.[3]

An entry in the Journal of John Winthrop Jr.: "1 Jan 1668/9 Hinderson Eliz 6 y: daught of Hinderso[n] Scotchma[n] at 30 mile Iland hath constant looseness married Mary Mudge her sister kinswoma[n] of serg:Wat[s] wife ... "[4] We know that Sgt Watt's wife, Elizabeth, was a daughter of George Steele. Elizabeth Hinderson was the daughter of John Henryson and Martha his wife, leading to the conclusion that Mary Mudge and Martha Henryson were sisters.[2]

Mary died before Dec 1649 when it is known that Jarvis had remarried the widow of Abraham Elsen.[2]

Children of Jarvis Mudge and [Mary?] (Steele) Mudge -- order uncertain:[2]

Moses Mudge b. c 1640 (aged 41 years or thereabouts on 7 Feb 1680/1; died about 1694 or 1695; m 1668 Elizabeth Weeden. 22 Jan 1683 Moses Mudge of Oyster Bay, "son and heir of Jarvis Mudge sometime of New London," conveyed his New London land to Christopher Christophers.
Martha Mudge b. say 1642 (estimate based on age 21 at birth of first child. She m. by 20 Mar 1661/2 John Henryson. She was grandchild of George Steele in 1663; sister of Mary Mudge in Jan 1668/9" and "cousen" [niece] of widow Elizabeth (Steele) Watts in 1685.
Micah Mudge b. say 1645 (estimate based on age 25 at marriage) d. "aged" between 17 March 1720/1 (will) and 14 Sep 1724 (inventory); m. Mary Alexander. May 1696, May 1697 and June 1709, Micah Mudge of Lebanon gave deeds to the land of "my father Jarvis Mudge deceased" to two men from New London.
