"Bernard Rogers, b. 1543-at Wittenburg, Saxony; who after receiving some education in Germany & upon reaching maturity, also returned to England, went to the northern part there of and finally crossed the border into Scotland & got his wife, where he is alleged to have temporarily settled and m. ab. 1564, N.N. (q.v.); and had known issue of a son Thomas Matthew--called after the nom de plune used by the Martyr in publishing the "Byble" (Rogers family traditions, corroborated by research of W. L. Underwood--when Consul, at Glasgow, Scotland; and by Dr. Wm. Byrd Rogers of Virginia--though he thought that the middle name, Matthew, might have come from the Furneaux ancestor; however, it is of little moment how he got the name--the main thing being that such a man lived."

(by John Cox Underwood-published in 1911)

There are those that believe that Bernard died on: 11 Novemeber 1563 in St Dunstan in the West, City of London ("England Deaths and Burials, 1538-1991," database, FamilySearch (https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:JDHZ-22W : 10 February 2018), Barnard Rogers, burial 11 Nov 1563; citing St. Dunstan-In-The-West, London, England, index based upon data collected by the Genealogical Society of Utah, Salt Lake City; FHL microfilm 396,193.), the same parish that his brother, Ambrose, lived in, and that he never married or had children. And that his name was used in conjunction with Thomas Matthew as part of a fraudulent scheme in the 1900's to connect people with money, to a pedigree with Bernard's father, John Rogers the 1555 martyr.

    Notes:

Per pedigree of: "John Rogers of Derytend in the parish of Aston Com. Warwick":
John Rogers, Lorimer (a person who made bits, spurs, and other small metal objects) of Deritend - Birth: about 1487 Died: December 1540
Immediate Family: Son of John Rogers, of Sutton Valence, Kent, England
    Brother: Nicholas Rogers
Wife: Margaret Wyatt, daughter of prominent tanner in Deritend
here are two Margaret Wyatts that are being confused. This one was the daughter of a Deritend tanner named John Wyatt. She married John Rogers a lorimer in Deritend. The other Margaret Wyatt was born the daughter of Henry Wyatt lived in a castle and married Sir Anthony Lee. They were not the same person.
Children: John Rogers, 1555 martyr (married Adriana de Weyden), William Rogers (died prior to 1540), Eleanor Rogers (married Robert Malward), Joan Rogers (married Baldwin Broke), Edward Rogers
Settled in Deritend, Aston, Birmingham, Warwick
Also called "John Rogers of Birmingham"
Left a Will made in December 1540, proved at Litchfield 25 December 1541

It appears that Thomas Rogers of Bradford and his second wife, Katherine de Courtnay, had a son known as "John Rogers of Sutton Valence in Kent". The Will of Katherine de Courtenay makes it clear that John and William Rogers were not her sons, but children of of her second husband, Thomas Rogers of Bradford. From the Visitations he (John Rogers of Sutton Valence in Kent) is noted as having had a son referred to as "John Rogers of Sutton Valence", who married a "Miss Coppinger" and he had a son named "Ralph Rogers." His son "John Rogers of Sutton Valence" left a Will and died in 1528.

According to the professionals that I talked to, the coat of arms of John Rogers of Deritend's family and the coat of arms used by Thomas Rogers of Bradford seem to indicate that they are of the same family.....it is just being a little difficult to figure how it fits together. The only sons of Thomas Rogers of Bradford that I can find reference to are the two he had with his first wife, Cecily Bessil, William and John Rogers of Sutton Valence in Kent, and George the only child that Thomas had with his second wife, Katherine de Courtenay.

According to the 4 pedigree of Thomas Rogers of Bradford, it appears that he and his second wife, Katherine de Courtenay, had a son known in pedigrees #4 and #2 as "John Rogers of Sutton Valence in Kent". The Will of Katherine de Courtenay makes it clear that John and William Rogers were not her sons, but children of of her second husband, Thomas Rogers of Bradford. This "John Rogers of Sutton, the second", was the son of that "John Rogers of Sutton Valence in Kent". He married a Miss Coppinger and had a son named Ralph. He left a Will in August of 1528 which was proved in January of 1528/9.
This could not have been the John Rogers of Deritend, as he left a Will in Deritend in the year 1540

The person on the top of the family pedigree for John Rogers, 1555 martyr is a man recorded as: ....Rogers of "Sutton Vallens in Kent." I am hoping to find more clarification as to exactly who was the father to John Rogers of Deritend the father of John Rogers 1555 martyr.

Thomas married Margaret (Margery) WYATT in 1505 in Deritend, Aston, Warwickshire, England. Margaret (daughter of Sir Henry WYATT and Anne SKINNER) was born in 1490 in Allington Castle, Boxley, Kent, England; died in 1540 in Dorset, Dorsetshire, England. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

  2. 9.  Margaret (Margery) WYATT was born in 1490 in Allington Castle, Boxley, Kent, England (daughter of Sir Henry WYATT and Anne SKINNER); died in 1540 in Dorset, Dorsetshire, England.
