Sir William Keith, succeeded his father [Lord Robert de Keith] between 2 July 1430 and 20 May 1431.

In a charter dated 20 May 1442, he conveyed to Robert de Keth, Knight, his eldest son, whom failing, to William, John, or Alexander, brothers of the said Robert, the lands of Keith, Garvock, Dunottar, Fetteresso, Strathechin, Culpersow, Kintore, and Aden, together with the offices of Marischal of Scotland and Sheriff of Kincardine.

Between 1446 and July 1451 he was made a Lord of Parliament as LORD KEITH. The date of creation can only be approximately ascertained. In an official report of evidence regarding a dispute between the family of Skene of Skene and that of the Marischal, held before a Court in the Cathedral of Aberdeen on 22 September 1446, he is styled Sir William Keith, Marischal.

In a series of charters granted by King James II on 6 July 1451, he is styled Lord Keith, and appears as the latest on the list of Peers after William, Lord Hay, the constable, who was created before 10 april 1450. His creation, therefore was then probably of recent date.

He was one of the guarantors of a treaty of peace with the English in 1457, and on 6 August of that year he witnesses the confirmation of a treaty by King James II as Lord Keith. Later he was raised a step in the Peerage, as in a royal charter dated 7 October of the following year (1458), he is designed 'dilectus consanguineus noster' EARL of MARISCHAL and 1ST LORD KEITH.

He died probably before Witsunday 1463, and certainly before 16 March 1463-64.

He married a lady named Mary who is usually said to have been the daughter of Sir James Hamilton of Cadzow, but there is no evidence of this, and the dates make it doubtful.

On 26 April 1414, Pope Benedict XIII issued a commission to grant dispensation for the marriage of 'William de Ketht' of St. Andrews diocese and Marjorie Fraser, daughter of Alexander Fraser of Moray diocese. This is probably the wife of Sir William Keith, and the daughter of Alexander Fraser of Kinnell and Lovat, who, as stated above, appears to have married about the same time Sir William's youngest sister, Marion.

She was dead before August 1442.

1. Sir Robert, in whose favour his father resigned his estates and offices in 1442. He is said to have died v.p. in 1446, ...
2. William, who succeeded as second Earl Marischal.
3. John, mentioned in a charter by his father dated 20 May May 1442.
4. Alexander, mentioned in the same charter with his elder brother John.
5. Janet, married, first to John Leslie, Master of Rothes; secondly, to Thomas, second Lord Innermeath. Based on the ages of her husbands, this Janet is most likely to be the daughter of William, Second Earl, and she has been moved to his family.
6. Egidia, married to James, second Lord Forbes, and was still a widow 14 August 1473.

Erskine was the son of Robert Erskine, 1st Lord Erskine, and Elizabeth, daughter of David Lindsay, 1st Earl of Crawford. He married Janet Douglas. They had several children. One daughter, Helen, married Humphrey Colquhoun of Luss, son of Sir John Colquhoun of Luss. Another daughter, Margaret, married William Keith, 1st Earl Marischal.[1]

Lord Erskine died in 1494 and was succeeded by his son, Alexander.

The identity of Thomas Erskine's wife is not certain. She may not have been a daughter of the 1st Earl of Morton although that is often stated, sometimes as Elizabeth but perhaps more often as Janet. Cunningham gedcom source says this Janet died without male issue which would seem to promote Elizabeths claim to the position of wife of Thomas Erskine and mother of his heir and probably other children.

Robert's date of birth is not recorded, he was likely born about 1350 at Dunotter Castle, seat of Clan Keith, in Kincardineshire, Scotland.
Robert's older brother John died in 1374. When his father died between 1407 and 1413, Robert succeeded him as Marischal of Scotland, and his Chief of Clan Keith.
According to the Peerage Robert was knighted between 1383 and 1390.

SIR ROBERT De KEITH, 2nd but eldest surviving son and heir, succeeded his father. After the death of his elder brother he had received from his parents the barony of Strathkyn; and, after the decease of his nephew Robert, the hereditary sheriffdom of Kincardine and a settlement in reversion of all the lands of Keith, with the office of the Marshalcy of Scotland, to hold to him and his heirs male, according to the charter of entail made by Robert I to Sir Robert De Keith, Marshal of Scotland, his father's great-uncle, by the ordinance of Parliament. He was knighted between February 1383 and September 1390. In May 1421 he was one of the Scottish hostages suggested by England as acceptable for the deliverance of James I [SCT]; in December 1423 and February 1424 he had licence to meet the returning King at Durham, with a retinue of 16 persons; and in July 1425, being then a hostage in York Castle, received permission, with others, to return to Scotland, on providing equivalent hostages. He married the heiress of the barony of Troup, who predeceased him. He seems to have been living 2, but was dead before 20 July 1430, when his son, William De Keith, as Marshal of Scotland, witnessed a charter of the Constable.

Sir Robert, the eldest surviving son, succeeded his father before the end of 1410. In two charters of the year 1407, Robert De Keth, son of William the Marischal, appears as a substitute after John Stewart, Lord of Buchan, and his two brothers Andrew and Robert. In 1375 he had a charter of confirmation from Robert II of the forest of Cowie, the forest of the Mounth, and other lands. In March 1406-7, Robert, Duke Of Albany, confirmed two charters by his father-in-law, Sir William De Keth, Marischal of Scotland, to his son and heir Sir Robert De Keth, Lord of Troup, one of the office of Sheriff of Kincardineshire, the other of the barony of Keith, office of Marischal of Scotland, lands of Colbanyston, barony of Aldene (now Aden), and forest of Kintore in Aberdeenshire, and other lands in Banffshire. He was one of the commissioners to treat for the liberation of King James I in 1423-24, and was a hostage for his ransom 28 March 1424, his estate being at this time valued at 800 merks. On 16 June 1425, he was handed over to Sir John Langeton, Warden of the Castle of York, but on the same day leave was given him to return to Scotland until the following Martinmas.

He was dead before 20 July 1430, when his son William witnesses as 'marescallus ScotiA?' a charter by Sir William Hay of Erroll, Constable of Scotland. On 24 January 1446-47 King James II issued a brieve to the Sheriffs of Aberdeen and Banff ordaining them to pay the bishops the teind penny due from the profits of Aden, Kintore, and Skene, through the decease of 'our cosynge umquhile the Lord of Kethe.' He married the heiress of Troup, whose hame has not been ascertained, with whom he got that barony. He is also but on doubtful authority, said to have married Elizabeth daughter of Sir David Lindsay, first Earl of Crawford.

The Hamiltons had been caught at sea by English privateers, again in violation of the truce. The English were urged to release the ship and restore their goods to them, or alternatively pay suitable recompense.

Sir John Hamilton, 4th Baron of Cadzow

This charter indicates, by its stated relationship of Sir James Hamilton to the grantee that the founder of the Raploch branch of the family was Walter Hamilton.

In relation to his reported first son however, as a result of extensive genetic genealogy research carried out by the Hamilton Surname Project, it has now been shown that contrary to popular belief John, the 4th Baron of Cadzow cannot have been the father of James (5th Baron of Cadzow).

Genetic testing of numerous descendants of James has shown that he carried a particular genetic marker on his Y chromosome. This marker, an SNP (single nucleotide polymorphism), is designated L-1237.

Similar testing involving descendants of John (ie James' half brothers) as well as descendants of John's non-lineal ancestors (uncles etc) has indicated that all of these males carry the SNP L-338.

Until a few years ago it was thought that James Hamilton (the 5th of Cadzow) was the son of John Hamilton the 4th of Cadzow but through the marvels of genetic testing it is now quite clear that this just cannot be. Who the actual father was is still a mystery but his genetic "finger-print" is known and the search goes on.

Two papers have been combined into one on the Internet and are highly recommended for anyone interested in exploring this mystery. One of the papers also gives an excellent account of the politics of the time providing an essential background to the emergence of this branc

John Hamilton married Janet or Jacoba Douglas, daughter of Sir James Douglas, 1st Lord Dalkeith, prior to 1388. It was thought that he had three sons by her:

However DNA testing of descendants of James and Walter in the Hamilton Surname DNA Project show that these two did not have the same father. The DNA project shows that the descendants of Walter and his uncle John Hamilton of Fingalton are related, which suggests that James's biological father was not from the same family.[1]

It is of some interest that the mother of James1 was Jacoba (Janet) Douglas (probably born about 1372), daughter of Sir James Douglas of Dalkeith and his first wife Agnes Dunbar. Agnes apparently died about 1378. By the time of Jacoba's marriage on 1 November 1388 to Sir John Hamilton, 4th of Cadzow, Sir James Douglas was married to Egidia Stewart, a half sister of King Robert II. Since the Douglas, Dunbar (Agnes was a sister of the Earl of March) and Stewart families were so prominent in that era in Scotland, the marriage of Jacoba to Sir John Hamilton of Cadzow undoubtedly brought prestige to the Hamilton family and ultimately led to future generations of the family playing such a prominent role in Scottish society. It may be that Jacoba knew her first born son was not fathered by her husband so rather than naming him after the Hamiltons she named him after her father. James as a first name was not used by any male line descendants of Walter Fitzgilbert de Hamilton up to that time but in subsequent generations James was used for all first born sons up to the first Duke of Hamilton.

Who was the father of James1? That is not known but one can speculate. If he or other relatives left male line descendants then they should show up with the Group B profile but with a different surname. The Group B DNA profile has unusual STR values at some sites, so unusual in fact that the presence of a combination of these values for a known haplogroup I1 individual virtually ensures that the person must be closely related to the Group B Hamiltons, regardless of surname. These unusual STR values are: 7 at DYS459a, 18 at YCAIIa, and 12 at DYS640. There are individuals with 5 other surnames known to have this Group B profile and who do not have a known connection to a Hamilton; they are A-214 (surname Arthurs), F-204 (surname Frame), F-313 (surname Filby), M-183 (surname Morrison) and B-324 (surname Baker). Of these, a Frame would seem to be the most likely father for James1. There are now three Frames (Frame Group B) known to have the Hamilton Group B profile. Also, the possible close connection of the Hamiltons and the Frames is accentuated by the fact that most of those with the Frame surname (Frame Group A) have a DNA profile very similar to the Group C Hamiltons. Furthermore, the Frames like the Hamiltons, Stewarts and Douglases have had a presence in Lanarkshire and other counties of Lowland Scotland for several centuries. It should be emphasized that a Frame as the father of James1 has not been proven; it is just a current working hypothesis.

The foregoing analysis suggests that all Hamilton participants in Group B are male line descendants of just one person, namely James1. This is consistent with the limited dispersion of marker values observed for those in Group B; the dispersion is about what would be expected for a 600 year (or about 20 generation) time period. The dispersion of marker values in Group A is greater indicating that the common ancestor for all those in Group A lived in an earlier time period. Also, the fact that there are considerably more participants in Group A than in Group B implies that the Group A line was initiated earlier. It is likely that Walter Fitzgilbert himself is the ancestor for most Hamiltons in Group A but the results would be consistent with some in Group A being derived from earlier male ancestors or male cousins of Walter Fitzgilbert.
