    "Oulde" John Mott 1570-1656 Immigrant

Most of what is known of Oulde John Mott come from articles published in the "American Genealogist" back in 1942-43.

John Mott was born in about 1570 in Saffron Waldon, Essex, England, possibly the son of John Mott and Frances Gutter. Saffron Waldon appears to have been a town larger that a mere village. There was an old castle there at the time and at leat one house from medieval times still stands. There would have been more opportunities to make a living from just farming, although we don't know what he did for a living. He was apparently married several times, to Elizabeth. Catherine and possibly Mary.

John was already an old man when he came to the New World, his son Adam having arrived first with his family. John was made a Freeman at Aquidneck in 1638, the year of it's founding, so at the time he must have been relatively healthy. Aquidneck is the large island of the state of Rhode Island and some very interesting people lived there, such as Anne and William Hutchinson and John Dyer. It would have been a collection of free-thinkers, Quakers and others who were not welcome or comfortable in Massachusetts. John Mott had land in 1639, but by 1644, the town of Portsmouth was providing for his care. he was apparently desperately ill in 1652 when the town ordered that a stone house be built "for the more comfortable being" of oulde John Mott in the winter. The house was not enough, so on the 23 January 1654/55 the town shipped him off to Barbados Island with admonition to the ship owner to bring him back if he "cannot be received there". He was brought back and son Adam was to provide him with a cow and a supply of corn in addition to what the town supplied.

John married Johanna Elizabeth HOLLIS on 20 Jan 1593 in Saffron Walden, Essex, England. Johanna (daughter of William HOLLIS and Sarah LEES) was born about 1566 in Saffron Walden, Essex, England; died before 2 Jan 1610 in Saffron Walden, Essex, England; was buried on 2 Jan 1610 in Bradwell, Essex, England. Notes:

Johanna Hollis was born about 1566, probably at Saffron Walden, Essex, England. Johanna married, on 20 Jan 1593 in Saffron Walden, John Mott. John was born about 1571 in Saffron Walden, and died 1656 in Portsmouth, Newport, Rhode Island. Johanna and John had at least one child, Adam Mott, born about 1596. Johanna (Hollis) Mott passed away at Saffron Walden around or after her son's date of birth.

    John Mott married:

Johanna Hollis, married on 20 Jan 1593 in Saffron Walden, England
Elizabeth, born about 1575 in Saffron Walden, Essex, England

    Children:
1.) Adam Mott, born about 1596 in Saffron Walden, Essex, England

The following is from The American Genealogist Vol. 20, page 227-228:

MOTT, Adam (p344, 1st col.) was the son of "oulde John Mott" who was admitted a freeman at Aquidneck in 1638. In 8 mo.: 1639 John Mott's land is mentiond. On 29 Aug. 1644, 25 Jan. 1648/9, 2 June 1650, 19 Jan 1651/2, 9 June 1652, 2 June 1653, 20 June 1653 and 17 June 1654, the town of Portsmouth, R. I. provided for his care (Records of the Town of Portsmouth). On 23 Jan 1654/5, the town agreed to pay the passage of "ould John Mott to Barbados Iland and back again if he cannot be received there, if he live to it, if the shipp owners will carried him." (ib., p. 66) On 3 July 1656 further provision was made for his keep and "the oulde mans son Adam" engaged to give a cow and a supply of corn towards it (ib. p. 72). The ould man was evidently held in high esteem, for the order of 9 June 1652 provided "that there shalbe a stone house built for the more comfortabl beinge of ould John Mott in the winter" (ib. p. 58).

    Notes
John Mott was admitted as an inhabitant of Aquidneck Island in 1638, probably with his son Adam Mott. It is not known when or on what ship he came to the colonies.

He was called Oulde John Mott and received care from the town of Portsmouth for several years from 29 Aug 1644 to his death, probably about 1656.
