EARLDOM of ARUNDEL (XIX, 14 or 7) 1421

JOHN D'ARUNDEL, [who, in right of either his father's writ or of the admission of 1433] may be considered Earl of Arundel. Son and heir born 14 February 1407/8, at Lytchett Mautravers, Dorset. Created K.B. at Leicester, by the young King, under the name of "Dominus de Maultravers." His claim to the Earldom of Arundel not having been recognised, he was, when of age, summoned to Parliament on 12 July and 3 August 1429, by writs directed Johanni Arundel' de Arundell' Chivaler, whereby he is held to have become Lord Arundel. In December 1431 he was in the coronation of Henry VI at Paris. He greatly distinguished himself in the French wars, and was made Captain of the Castle of Rouen in February 1431/2. On 22 April 1432 he was created K.G.; and in November 1433 his petition to be considered Earl of Arundel by tenure of the Castle of Arundel, was allowed, but he was never afterwards summoned to Parliament as an Earl or a Baron. He was created, in 1434, Duke of Touraine in France, by the Regent Bedford. The Earl was severely wounded and taken prisoner at the siege of Gerberoy, in the Beauvaisis, in May 1435, was carried to Beauvais, where his leg was amputated. He died several weeks later 12 June 1435 and was buried in the Grey Friars there, though, in accordance with his will, his body was reinterred in a noble tomb at Arundel.

He married 1stly [or, more probably, was contracted as a minor to] Constance, daughter of John [Cornwall], Lord Fanhope, by Elizabeth, daughter and coheir of John of Gaunt, Duke of Lancaster. She died s.p. and v.p. before 1429. He married 2ndly, before 1429, Maud, widow of Sir Richard Stafford of Southwick, Wilts [who died about 1427], daughter and heir of Robert Lovell (younger son of John, 5th Lord Lovell of Titchmarsh), by Elizabeth, daughter and coheir of Sir Guy Bryene, who was 1st son and heir apparent of Sir Guy Bryene [Lord Bryene]. She died 19 May 1436. [Complete Peerage I:247-8, XIV:39, (transcribed by Dave Utzinger)]

John d'Arundel, 13th/6th Earl of Arundel, as which succeeded cousin 1415 and was perhaps summoned to Parliament 1416 though not thereafter (it is thought because of Mowbray hostility to his claims that family being heirs general of the previous Earls of Arundel), and de jure 3rd Lord (Baron) Mautravers, as which succeeded grandmother Jan 1404/5 (though never summoned to Parliament by that title; nevertheless he was frequently referred to as Lord Mautravers prior to 1415), KB(1399); born 1 Aug 1385; served in Agincourt Campaign 1415; married by 1407, as her 1st husband Eleanor (married 2nd Sir Richard Poynings and 3rd by 8 May 1439 1st Lord (Baron) Hungerford), daughter of Sir John Berkeley, of Beverstone, Glos, and died 21 April 1421. [Burke's Peerage]

    ---------------------

EARLDOM of ARUNDEL (XVIII, 13 or 6) 1415

JOHN D'ARUNDEL, [who, according to the admission of 1433] may be considered Earl of Arundel, cousin and heir male, being son and heir of John d'Arundel, by Elizabeth, daughter of Edward le Despenser, which last named John [who never was summoned as a Baron] was son and heir of John D'Arundel [summoned to Parliament 1377-79], who was brother of the whole blood of Richard [xv] Earl of Arundel. Succeeded his father 14 August 1390, created K.B. 12 October 1399, became de jure Lord Mautravers by the death of his grandfather [suo jure Baroness Mautravers] on 10 January 1404/5, but was never summoned to Parliament as a Baron, though frequently styled Lord Mautravers. He was in the French wars of 1415, in which year he succeeded to the Castle and Honour of Arundel, and according to some authorities, is said to have been summoned to Parliament as Earl of Arundel, 3 September 1416, though [probably owing to the opposition of the great family Mowbray, the heirs gen. of the former Earls of Arundel] never afterwards.

He married, before 1407, Eleanor, daughter of Sir John Berkeley, of Beverstone, co. Gloucester, by his 1st wife, Elizabeth, daughter and heir of Sir John Betteshorne, of Betteshorne in Sopley, Hants. He died 21 April 1421, and was buried at Arundel. John; never called to Parliament (perhaps because his mother was still living; if so it would strengthen the supposition that his father was called to Parliament as a peer in right of his wife; (see below against 17th/10th Earl where the Barony of Arundel and Mautravers are amalgamated); born 30 Nov 1364; served against Scots by land 1383 and at sea (against the French?) 1388; married by 1387 Elizabeth, daughter of 1st Lord (Baron) le Despenser, and died 14 Aug 1390. BARONY of ARUNDEL (II) 1379

JOHN D'ARUNDEL, son and heir, born 30 November 1364. He was never summoned to Parliament He was with the army in Scotland in 1383, and with the English Fleet in 1388. He married, before 1385, Elizabeth, daughter of Edward (DESPENSER), LORD Le DESPENSER, by Elizabeth, daughter and heir of Bartholomew (BURGHERSH), LORD BURGHERSH. He died 14 August 1390, and was buried in Missenden Abbey. On 15 July 1406 he is referred to as John Darundell Chivaler, and his son as John Darundell Esquire. His widow married William (LA ZOUCHE), LORD ZOUCHE OF HARYNGWORTH, who died 13 May 1396. She died 10 or 11 April 1408. Will, desiring to be buried in Tewkesbury Abbey, dated 4 Apri 1408. [Complete Peerage I:260, XIV:40, (transcribed by Dave Utzinger)]

Note: CP assumes that the reason he was not called was because this Barony, even though it was not named so, was really the Mautravers/Maltravers Barony in right of his mother Eleanor; and John died before she did and therefore was not summoned to Parliament. However since the title was Arundel, and not Mautravers, he can legally be assumed to be the 2nd of that title.

John married Elizabeth Le DESPENSER before 1385 in 1st Husband. Elizabeth (daughter of Edward II 1St Baron Le DESPENSER, Kg, Sir and Elizabeth De BURGHERSH) was born about 1367 in Essendine, Rutlandshire, England; died between 10 and 11 Apr 1408 in Harringworth, Northamptonshire, England; was buried in Tewkesbury Abbey, Gloucestershire, England.
