BARONY OF FITZWALTER (V, 7) 1415
WALTER (FITZWALTER), LORD FITZWALTER, next brother and heir, born at Woodham Walter and baptized in the Church there, 22 June 1400 or 1401. He obtained the office of Master of the
King's hart-hounds, 29 July 1420, and was appointed Captain of Vire 14 January 1420/1, when he was already a knight. He was at the siege of Melun, July to November 1420, and was taken prisoner at the battle of Baug?, 22 March 1420/1. On 5 July 1423 he had livery of his father's lands, his homage and fealty being respited. In January 1425/6 he was sent---with 500 men---by the Duke of Gloucester to assist he Duke's wife, Jacqueline, Countess of Hainault, but his army was defeated by the Duke of Burgundy at Brouvershaven in Zeeland, and chased back to their ships. In 1431 he was a commander in the war with France. He was summoned to Parliament from 12 July 1429 to 27 November 1430I, by writs directed Waltero fitz Wauter chivaler.
He married Elizabeth, widow of William MASSY, King's esquire (who was living 16 May 1425), and daughter of Sir John CHIDIOK, of Chideock, Dorset, [5th Lord FitzPayn], by Alianore, daughter and heir of Sir Ioun FITZWARIN, of Caundle Haddon, Dorset, Isle Brewers, Somerset, &c. He died s.p.m., 25 November 1431, aged 30 or 31, and was buried in Dunmow Priory. On 5 June 1432 his widow had livery of the manors of Woodham Walter, Burnham, Lexden, Henham, Little Dunmow, Essex, Hempnall, Diss with the hundred, Norfolk, and the manors and advowsons of Wimbish and Sheering, Essex, Shimpling, Suffolk, &c., of which she and her husband had been jointly enfeoffed, the King having taken her fealty therefor. She married, 3rdly, before 5 November 1438, as 1st wife, Sir Thomas COBHAM, [5th Lord Cobham], of Sterborough, Surrey. She died 14 June 1464, and was buried in Dunmow Priory. She, who had married previously William Massy, King's esquire [who was living 16 may 1425], was daughter to Sir John Chidiok, of Chidiock, Dorset [5th Lord FITZPAYN, by Alianore, daughter and heir of Sir John FITZWARIN, of Caundle Haddon, Dorset, Isle Brewers, Somerset, &c. BARONY OF FITZWALTER (IV, 5) 1386
WALTER (FITZWALTER), LORD FITZWALTER, 2nd but 1st surviving son and heir, by 1st wife, born at Henham, 5 September 1368. On 21 February 1389/90 the King took his homage and fealty and he had livery of his father's lands, his age having previously been proved. In February 1394/5 he was on the King's service in Ireland with the Duke of Gloucester. He was summoned to Parliament from 12 September 1390 to 25 August 1404, by writs directed Waltero fitz Wauter. As one of the Lords temporal, he swore on the altar of the shrine of St. Edward at Westminster, 30 September 1397, to maintain all the statutes &c. made in the preceding session of Parliament. In May 1398 he was in Ireland with the Earl of March, Lieutenant of Ireland. On 18 October 1399 he created a scene in Parliament by accusing the Duke of Aumarle of being accessory to the murder of the Duke of Gloucester. He gave his assent, in Parliament, 23 October 1399, to the secret imprisonment of Richard II.
He married Joan, sister and heir of Sir John DEVEREUX, of Whitechurch Maund, co. Hereford (who died s.p. 13 November 1396), and only daughter of Sir John DEVFREUX, of Dinton, Bucks, &c. [LORD DEVEREUX], by Margaret, daughter of John (DE VEER), EARL OF OXrORD. They had livery of the manor of Dinton, 2 August 1397, the escheator in co. Bucks being ordered to take his fealty. On 5 June 1400 he obtained licence for his feoffees to grant the manor of Burnham, Essex, to his wife, for life. In passing by sea from Rome to Naples, he was captured by Saracens and taken prisoner to Tunis. Having been ransomed by some Genoese merchants, he died at Venice, 16 May 1406, aged 37. His widow's dower was ordered to be assigned, 29 January 1407/8. Before this date she had married (royal licence, 1 July 1407, to marry whom she would, for a fine ?40),(t) as 3rd wife, Sir Hugh BURNELL, of Holdgate, Salop,Weoley, co.Worcester, &c. [LORD BURNELL], who died 27 November 1420, and whose will, directing his burial to be in the Abbey of Hales Owen, was dated at Weoley, 2 October 1417, and proved in the Palace of the Archbishop of Canterbury, 6 February 1420/1. She, for whom robes of the Garter were provided in 1399 and 1409, was aged 17 and more in 1397, died 10 or 11 May 1409, and was buried in Dunmow Priory. JOAN DEVEREUX, sister and heir, aged 17 and more at her brother's death. She married, 1stly, Sir Walter FITZWAUTER, 5th Lord FITZWAUTER, of Woodham Walter, Essex. They had livery of her inheritance, viz., the manor of Dinton, 2 August 1397, his fealty therefor being ordered to be taken by the escheator in co. Bucks. He, who was born In September 1368, at Henham, Essex, died 16 May 1406 aged 37. Will, directing his burial to be in the Church of Henham. On 1 July 1407 she had royal licence to marry whom she would, for a fine ot ?40. She married, 2ndly, before 29 January 1407/8, when her dower (of her 1st husband's lands) was ordered to be assigned, as 3rd wife, Sir Hugh BURNELL, of Holgate, Salop, Weoly, co. Worcester, &c. [LORD BURNELL], who died 27 November 1420, and whose will, dated at Weoly, 2 October 1417, was proved in the Palace of the Archbishop of Canterbury, 6 February 1420/1. She, for whom Robes of the Order of the Garter were ordered to be provided in 1399 and 1409, died 10 or 11 May 1409, and was buried in Dunmow Priory.
Her heir was her 1st s., Humphrey FitzWauter, who was born 18 October 1398, at Penshurst, Kent, and died s.p. 1 September 1415, being succeeded by his next brother, Walter FitzWauter, who was born 22 June 1401, at Woodham Walter. Any hereditary Barony of Devereux, that may be supposed to have been created by the writ of 1384, was thus united to that of FitzWauter. [CP 4:301-2, 14:258]

He [Hugh Burnell] m. 3rdly, 1408 or 1409, Joan de jure suo jure [according to modern doctrine] BARONESS DEVEREAUX, widow of Walter (FITZWALTER), LORD FITZWALTER, sister and heir of John, 2nd Lord Devereaux, daughter of John (DEVEREUX), 1st LORD DEVEREUX, by Margaret, daughter of John (DE VERE), 7th EARL OF OXFORD. She, who was one of the Iadies for whom robes of the Order of the Garter were provided, firstly in 1399 as The Lady Fitzwalter, and secondly in 1409 (after her remarriage), as the Lady de Burnell, died 10 or 11 May 1409, and was buried at Dunmow.
