This proves that "Percival" was NOT the famous novelist/humorist's middle name. "Pope" is written in his mother's own hand. The Opie Pope family had a business across the street from the Read's carriage shop in Nashville in the 1850's, hence the name. Percival was made up as were many of his stories about the family.
Opie Read was a novelist, humorist and journalist. Much of theesrly info here is from the Encyclopedia Britanica.
