    Notes:

Subject: Re: The first Giffards (n part): When Count William of Eu died shortly before 1040, Gilbert did assume the land and title, but he was assassinated in 1040 and his young sons, RICHARD and Baldwin were forced to flee Normandy, finding safety at the court of BALDWIN V, COUNT OF FLANDERS (RIN 2169). When WILLIAM THE CONQUEROR (RIN 798) married COUNT BALDWIN's daughter, he restored Gilbert's sons to Normandy, although he did not invest them with either Brionne or Eu or a comital title. WILLIAM granted the lordships of Bienfaite and Orbec to RICHARD FITZ GILBERT, and Le Sap and Meules to Baldwin. Although Gilbert's descendants later pressed a claim for Brionne, it was never restored. RICHARD and Baldwin ftizGilbert took part in the Norman conquest of England, and both assumed important positions in THE CONQUEROR's reign. --- Michael Altschul *A Baronial Family in Medieval England: The Clares,1217-1314*, Baltimore MD (Johns Hopkins Press) 1965, p 18-19

For a more detailed account of the Battle of Mortremer, in which Walter was one of the leaders, see the notes on HUGH DE GOURNAY III (RIN 6715). Sandy McDougall posted to the soc.genealogy.medieval on1 Jul 1996: Subject: WALTER GIFFARD-BUCKINGHAM WALTER GIFFARD of Longueville in Normandy (where he held a substantial fief) was with the Conqueror at Hastings and received from him a large fief in England, mainly in Buckingham, but of this there is no proof (he is recorded in Domesday as holding one of a group of ten fiefs aggregating L5,000 per annum. Orderic II. 49 says "Walter Giffard was given the Earldom of Buckinghamshire by the Conqueror." The relative dates in Orderic's record, if these be properly placed, are 1071-1080, which would be within the lifetime of Walter I. When Orderic wrote of this period Walter Giffard II was an Earl, and the original grant may have been antedated by the annalist). He is said to have died late in the Conqueror's reign, leaving a son and heir Walter II.

NOTES: The following is from the "Coffin of Porthledge" genealogy, beginning on page 208, and from the "Giffard of Halsbury" pedigree, beginning on page 396. Vivian distinguishes the original visitation material from his additions by putting the visitation material in italics. None of the material quoted below was in italics, so it was presumably all from Vivian's "additions". Vivian is a respected source, but some errors have been found in some of his work.
