Research through the Wampanoag Indian tribe in Massachusetts indicates that James Covell, born between 1620 and 1623, married a Wampanoag woman sometime after his arrival in Massachusetts.

The following is from "The History of Martha's Vineyard, Dukes County, Mass." in 3 volumes by Charles Edward Banks, MD, Edgartown, published by the Dukes County Historical Society, 1925:

James Covell was on Martha's Vineyard from 1651 on. He was one of the " First comers" and received a grant of ten acres March 27, 1651 on the Meshacket Path, where he built a house and continued to live there until his death. He was admitted as the proprietor of a half share in 1660, and "submitted" to the Mayhew government the next year. He was elected the drummer of the train band at the same time, and served as a juror in 1659 and 1677. His name apprears in the records continuously in the drawing of lots, though there is a hiatus, 1664-1682, when it appears but once in any connection. In 1687 he was granted twenty acres of land in the New Purchase, the last time his name occurs during life. On August 19, 1690, administration of his estate was granted to his son Philip, and he was then called "late desesed."

See the "History of Martha's Vineyard" by Henry Franlkin Norton, 1923; Henry Franklin Norton and Robert Emmett Pyne, Publishers for history of the Indians on Martha's Vineyard, who called the island Noepe. Thomas Mayhew Jr. served as a missionary there to the Indians. A chief named Hiacoomes and his entire family were among the first converts to Christianity there. He and his entire family attended the church at the Vineyard. Also see the "Annals of Edgartown" by Dr. Charles E. Banks. The Edgartown area itself was deeded through Tewanquatick, Sagamore of Nunnepog --- Nunnepog being the Algonquian name for the place chosen as the town site of Edgartown. Research indicates the majority of the Indians on the island converted to Christianity and there was almost no conflict with the settlers. For the first 10 years or so, the Indian population outnumbered the whites almost 10 to 1.

Relations between the Indians of the Vineyard and the settlers remained stable, even through King Phillip's War on the mainland.

    --------------
The following information was found by reseracher Al Covell and is noted here for referene. The James mentioned cannot be the James who died in Edgartown before 19 Aug 1690. It could be his son James, or James the son of Ebeneer:

Suffolk Town Records (Sufflok County, New York) by J. Wickham Case, Vol. 2, page 74:
"15th day of September, Anno Domnini 1693, Matthew Mayhew of Marthas Vineyard Esq. having two Indian servents the one named Keiape the Other James Covell bound for the full term of seven years" sold these servents to Jackob Mayle.
