Jan Bell (Gulledge) who provided the following:
"I remember so clearly Grandpa (Alonzo) telling us kids, his
first/oldest memory:

Grandpa's father (Elijah) died when he was 2 or 3 years old, and he was buried in
the family plot with a wooden marker. After the burial, the Gulledge
family saved money for years, /for one purpose/; to buy an engraved
tombstone to place on his grave, one befitting a church 'Elder'. The
price of the Tombstone was so exorbitant that it took almost 4-5 years
of savings to purchase the marker.

Grandpa Alonzo was about 7 years old when he begged, pleaded and was
finally allowed to accompany his two oldest brothers in the buckboard to
St. Louis. They were sent to pick up the mail ordered tombstone for
their father. The trip was long, scary, and so impressed - the
youngsters who had never left the 'backyard' before, but were
honor-bound to 'fetch' their Dad's grave marker. It left such an
indelible impression on my Grandfather, that at 90 years old, he still
spoke of the trip he took with his older brothers.

My Grandfather, Alonzo Gulledge would be so thrilled to see this
information in print. Grampa always emphasized the family lineage to us
grandkids when I was growing up. He was concerned that the 'family
roots' would someday be lost to the following generations.....he was
very proud of his 'roots' and was afraid that all that information would
be lost.....he was quite a man......

He raised his own 4 children, 8 of his grandchildren, and 2 of his great
grandchildren.......at the age of 79 he announced he was leaving
California (where he had resided since the 30's), was going back to
Poplar Bluff, Missouri, where he was born, and wanted to be
buried......He asked my grandmother, Daisy Gulledge to please come back
with him, where they could spend their twilight years where they both
grew up....she refused to leave the 'kids' and family here in
California........so grandpa left here alone to make a life for himself
in Missouri where his brothers and sisters still lived.

For years he spoke many times a day on the phone to all of the 'kids'
and Grandma......Grandma and Grandpa stayed as close as could be, were
constantly on the phone, but were separated by a half of the
country......Grandpa became very prosperous in Poplar Bluff, and all of
the kids and grandkids repeatedly visited him through-out the years. He
died 4 years ago on Easter morning-in his sleep......he loved life,
children, dancing, and people in general......

As his oldest granddaughter, (one he & grandma raised), I miss him from
my very soul.....I remember sitting on his mule while he plowed the
garden in Sebastopol, of him dressing up and taking me to my school
functions, and trying to teach me the 'Irish Jig' he learned from his
mother....."

WILLIAM CAME TO HICKMAN COUNTY AND PERRY COUNTY IN TENNESSEE AS EARLY AS 1813, AND CROSSED OVER INTO DECATUR COUNTY IN WEST TENNESSEE ABOUT 1820 TO 1822, AFTER TREATY WITH INDIANS, AND THEIR REMOVAL. WE, ARE NOT SURE AT THE PRESENT TIME, BUT FEEL VERY STRONG THAT IT IS A POSSIBILITY THAT MY GREAT-GREAT-GREAT-GREAT-GRANDPARENTS WERE ALSO ANOTHER WILLIAM GULLEDGE, AND WIFE TEMPLE JONES GULLEDGE, AS WE HAVE FOUND A RECORD OF MARRIAGE LICENSE BEING ISSUED TO THEM AT THE DAVIDSON COUNTY COURT HOUSE-NASHVILLE, TENNESSEE. BOOK #1, FROM JANUARY 2, 1789 TO DECEMBER 13, 1837 ON PAGE #30 DECEMBER 22, 1797 A LICENSE WAS ISSUED FOR THIER MARRIAGE. THE GULLEDGE'S HAD MOVED ACROSS TENNESSEE, THROUGH VARIOUS COUNTYS UNTIL THEY GOT TO ROBERTSON COUNTY, TENNESSEE (THIRTY ODD MILES NORTH OF NASHVILLE), AND THEN THEY STARTED A SOUTH-WESTERLY MOVEMENT THROUGH DAVIDSON COUNTY, HICKMAN COUNTY, AND HUMPHREY COUNTY TO THE TENNESSEE RIVER. I HAVE A FEELING THAT IS NOT FAR FROM WAVERLY, TENNESSEE AND CAMDEN, TENNESSEE. THEY LIVED AND DIED ON THIS FARM (A GOOD SIZED FARM-SEVERAL MEMBERS HAD HOMES ON IT). THIER HOME WAS ON A "PERIMETER RIDGE" JUST OUT OF CUB CREEK BOTTOM, SOMETHING LIKE THREE QUARTERS OF A MILE SOUTH OF JOHN TAYLOR AND JANIE QUINN'S HOME, THERE IS STILL SIGNS OF THE OLD HOME AND CHIMNEY. ON A "BRANCH" THAT RUNS JUST SOUTH OF JOHN TAYLOR QUINN'S HOME IS A LOCATION OF A "BRIDGE" THAT HAS ALWAYS BEEN THERE-THIS BRIDGE IS AT A POINT OF A "HIGH BLUFF" ON THE SOUTH SIDE OF THE BRANCH, AND ON THIS HIGH-BLUFF RIGHT ON THE BRANCH IS "THE OLD TIME GULLEDGE SETTLER'S GRAVEYARD" WHERE THE OLDER ONES FIRST BURIED THEIR FOLKS. THERE IS BETTER THAN TWENTY GRAVES HERE WITH STANDING SANDSTONE HEADMARKERS. WILLIAM, SARAH (HIS WIFE)- WILLIAM CARROLL AND HIS WIFE FRANCES DOWDY GULLEDGE, ARE THE ONLY ONES THAT WE CAN BE SURE OF AT THE PRESENT TIME. JUST SOUTH OF THIS GRAVEYARD, IS THE FAMILY GRAVEYARD OF JAMES GULLEDGE, AND HIS WIFE VISA (OR VISEY) GIBSON GULLEDGE ARE BURIED HERE-THEY HAVE A GRANITE AND INSCRIPTIONS. ALSO WILLIAM (OR BILL) GULLEDGE, JIM HIRAM GULLEDGE, JOHN HENRY, AND THIER SISTERS ARE BURIED HERE, THIS GRAVEYARD IS ABOUT A THIRD OF A MILE SOUTH OF THE OLD GRAVEYARD. AT THE JOHN TAYLOR QUINN AND HIS WIFE JANIE'S IS ANOTHER GRAVEYARD WHERE WE FIND JOHN GULLEDGE, AND HIS WIFE ELIZABETH HAMPTON GULLEDGE BURIED HERE, IT IS BELIVED THAT THEY, AND THIER OWN FAMILY STARTED THIS GRAVEYARD. JOHN TAYLOR QUINN WAS BURIED HERE, BUT WIFE JANIE WAS BURIED AT THE NEW CEMETARY AT CEDAR HILL.

Settled in Perry County Tennessee old 5th Distric which became 12th Distric,Decatur County in 1845. Mr Gulledge settled on the Gulledge branch and Cub Creek. He was burried at the old Gulledge settlers grave yard on A bluff on the Gulledge Branch. (Note in book I do not know where AB got the information and do not know if it is any relation to these Gulledges) A William Gulledge and a Tomas Gulledge had militay service with the Militia, Probly the state Militia in the Indian Wars and the War of 1812. Rearch is needed on theifr famly too.
Where Sarah was born not clear 1960 census shows her being born in GA. maybe SC. Sara died 1869 at old home place Gulledge branch and Cub Creek. Buried at the old Gulledge settlere's graveyard
