1709.
"I, Thomas Bunce, do ordain this to be my last will and
testament: Imprimis: I give to my eldest son Thomas these following
parcels of land, vizt: My homelot in Hartford on which I now dwell, with
all the houseing and outhousing thereon, with all the privileges and
appurtenances thereto belonging. It. My whole lot on Rocky Hill lying
etween the lands of Mr. Joseph Bull and Mr. Samuel Howard. It. An
upland lot lying in Wethersfield bounds, about fifteen acres, near unto
Joseph Skinner's land. It. Half my lot lying in Willcock's lots. It.
The free use of a drift highway to the said land, already laid out,
between the land lately belong to Mr. Bidwell and Samuel Benton. It. My
mowing pasture commonly called Graves's lot, lying between Mr.
Buckingham's land and Mr. Bull's. It. Those parcels of land on the east
side of the Great River in Hartford, viz,. the whole of my upland lot.
It. Half my meadow lot, viz., that half on the north side, it being
divided from the west to the east.
It. My whole right in the five-mile purchase. It. Those several
parcels of land lying in the sourth meadow in Hartford, viz., my lot I
bought of Mr. Samuel Whiting. It. One acre and half lot lying in the
swamp, given me by my father. It. A two-acre lot I bought of Goodman
Cadwell. It. One acre and a half lying in the middle swamp, bought of
Thomas Andrews. It. My property lot in the West Division uplands, with
all my interest in the mills, I give to my son Joseph, to him and his
heirs forever. It. I give to my son Jonathan my home lot in Wethersfield
with all the houseing and out housing thereon. It. All my uplands and
meadow land within th the Township of Wethersfield (excepting only that
lot lying by Joseph Skinner's lands, already given to my son Thomas),
these I give to my son Jonathan and his heirs forever. It. I give to my
son Jospeh and his heirs forever the home lot in Hartford that was my
father's and on which he now dwells, with all the houseing and outhousing
thereon. It. I give to him the southern half of my meadow lot ont he
east side of the great River in Hartford. It. To my daughter Susannah,
besides what I have already given her, I give her 10 shillings. It. To

Thomas married Susannah BULL in 1669 in Hartford, Hartford County, Connecticut. Susannah (daughter of Capt. Thomas BULL and Susannah WORTHINGTON) was born after 1646 in England; died in Jan 1693 in Hartford, Hartford County, Connecticut. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

Note: Thomas' wife is mistakenly referred to by researchers as Sarah Bull from published accounts of a "Prob" probable marriage mentioned in A Genealogical Dictionary of the First Settlers of New England, James Savage, a confusion with their son Thomas. However, age differences cannot be ignored and the lineage of Sarah Bull and her children are proved in Thomas Bull's will. Sarah, wife of THIS Thomas will remain unkown as to her maiden name, and Thomas' son Thomas b: 1648 will remain as the proven husband of Sarah Bull.

As one of an army of about 90 men raised from Hartford, Windsor and Wethersfield, he served as an ensign in the Pequot Indian war of May, 1637...Thomas Bunce was granted 60 acres in 1671 and an additional 50 acres in 1672 by the General Court "for his Good service therein." His land was located near the present site of the state Capitol.

Thomas, the original immigrant who came from England around 1635, probably marched with Hooker from Cambridge to Hartford in 1636. He was there early enough to be considered a "founder", and his name is on the proprietor's list of 1639. He and his wife were members of the Second or South Church.
Thomas accepted civic responsibilities. He was a constable in 1648,
juror in 1649, townsman (selectman) in 1655, 61, and 65, rate setter and list maker
1668-71 and 1672-73. He served as an ensign in the Pequot War, and "for
his Good service therein" was later granted 110 acres of land. His home was
near the site of the present Capitol. He was evidently involved with
construction work, since records show he helped build a new mill, and he worked to repair the bridge across Little River in 1648.
His descendants were many in Connecticut, as evidenced by their numbers in
Barbour's 'Families of Early Hartford'.

"In the center of the cemetery is a venerable monument erected in 1835 in
1835 to the memory of 'The Founders of Hartford.' One hundred and two names
including Thomas Bunce.
Boston Transcript, 22 July 1908, #9961: The inventory of Thomas Bunce was
taken August 3, 1683. Will not dated. To his son John Bunce he gave "my Lott
Lyeing over against Mr. Webster," etc. The two last parcels of land John Bunce
was "to possess immediately after the decease of me & my wife Sarah Bunce."

The Genealogical and Family History of the State of Connecticut, p. 535, and other sources state that Thomas Bunce was born in 1612 in England, said to have been from "Saybrooke, England," of English or Scottish ancestry. He was a "sturdy Puritan, who was at Hartford in 1639, a landed proprietor."
He was considered a wealthy man, as he owned land in Hartford and Wethersfield at the time of his death. His wife survived him by ten years, dying in January, 1693/94, leaving a will dated 1689, which mentioned their grandchildren, Sarah, Thomas and Mehitabel Meekins, and the two oldest children of her son, John Bunce, leaving the remainder of her property to her sons John and Thomas Bunce, executors of her will. A copy of her will also appears in A Digest of the Early Connecticut Probate Records, in Vol. 1, p. 283,

Thomas and Susannah were early members of the first Church in Hartford. They separated to the second church on February 12, 1670 of which they were original members. Thomas Bunce's name is on the Founders Monument in Hartford, CT. Thomas was commonly called Captain.

"Soldiers of King Philip's War, 1675" by George M. Bodge, Boston, 1906 lists a Thomas Bull, enlisted in Dedham, MA on 9 of Xber, 1675, April 1676, and June 24, 1676. It's unknown if this is the same Thomas Bull. Also, this source lists a Thomas Bull from Hartford, CT under the enlistment year of 1637 serving under Capt. John Mason, was in the Pequot War, and received grants of land for service. It's unknown if this is the same as Thomas Bull.
"Connecticut Soldiers in the Pequot War of 1637" by James Shepard, Meriden, CT, 1913, citation supplied by Cynthia - Internet Contact ([email protected]) shows that Thomas Bull enlisted from Hartford; was first at Boston or Cambridge in 1635; Hartford 1636; was in command at the Fort at Saybrook in 1675 [King Phillip's War]; died 1684. Had 7 children...In 1639, Thomas Bull informed the court (at Hartford) that a musket marked "I.W." was taken up at Pequanocke, which was received to be John Wood's who was killed at the river's mouth.
