11880 [From Burke's Peerage-see source for details]

An undoubted Earl of Gloucester, perhaps the first authentic one, at any rate after the Conquest, is Robert FitzHamon's son-in-law, another Robert, who was an illegitimate son of Henry I and was so created 1122. The Earldom passed to his eldest son, William FitzRobert, and from him to John, later King John and husband from 1189 to 1199 (when he divorced her) of Isabel, the youngest of William FitzRobert's three daughters. On John's coming to the throne the title did not merge in the Crown for it was not his in his own right but in right of his wife.

11881 [GERARD DE LISLE, son and heir apparent, by 1st wife, was aged 15 at his mother's death in 1375. In May 1373 he was contracted to marry Anne, daughter of Sir Michael DE LA POLE, with a portion of 1,500 marks, Gerard's father making a suitable provision. On 30 October 1377, being then a knight, he was going to sea with John de Arundel, the King's Marshal. Later he was taken prisoner, and in January 1379/80 messengers were sent over seas with money for the ransom of Michael de la Pole, John de Beurle and Gerard del Isle. He died v.p. and s.p., before 30 November 1381. His widow married Robert THORLEY, of Tybeste, Cornwall. She died 30 March 1412.] [Complete Peerage VIII:52-3, (transcribed by Dave Utzinger)] LISLE, Gerard De Of Kingston, Sir Knight (I13351)

His residence was near Dr. Eliot's meeting house where he died in April,1796. His estate was not administered. He was a member of the Boston TeaParty. He was a soldier in the revolution from Grafton and Boston inCaptain Luke Drury's company, Colonel Jonathan Ward's regiment, July toNovember, 1775 (p. 848, vol. In 1790,the first federal census, as printed by the government does not show hisname, but a better copy, published by the city of Boston shows that hehad one male under sixteen and seven females in his family (p. 501). Inthe same volume we find Mary Dolbeare and Sarah Dolbeare, both doubtlesswidows, owners of property on Clarke street. We know of but one child byname, Edmund Phillips, mentioned below.

IV) Edmund Grice, son of Edmund Dolbeare, was born about 1725. Sometimesthe middle name is not used, and it may have been assumed in later life,as middle names were very rare at that time. It is used in the record ofhis marriage, however. He married (first) July 2, 1747. ElizabethBickford. He married (second) February 13, 1755. Sarah Bill, born April15, 1727, daughter of Richard Bill, a merchant on Cornhill, Boston, lieutenant of the Artillery Company (the Ancient and Honorable), in 1720,owner of Spectacle Island. Samuel Bill, father of Richard Bill, was abutcher in Boston, owned Spectacle Island, died August 18, 1705. Hiswidow married Eleazer Phillips, of Charlestown, March 22. 1705-06, andthis perhaps explains the name Phillips in the Dolbeare family.
