435 !Pat Saupe of Moore's Hill, Indiana, feels that Daniel and Jemina
Ponder
may be the parents of Abner Ponder. There is no documentation or
proof of
this relationship found to date . I am not certain where the names
of these
children came from. Oct 1988.

!The Ponder Family History, 21 typed pages, provided me by Mrs.
Catherine
Ponder of Houston, Oct 1988, noted Daniel Ponder to be in Buffalo
Gap, Augusta
Co, VA, in 1763, noted issue of Daniel as Silas, Amos, Daniel, John
Lewis,
James, Malinda, Mary Ann, and Jemima...also notes that their father
(Daniel)
came to Oglethorpe Co, GA, and then to Jasper. Was this the Daniel
in Abbeville
Co, SC in 1790?

!Buffalo gap, VA is near the Maryland line where "the original
Daniel was in
1750." From Ponder notes provided me by Catherine Ponder of TX.

!Notes from Catherine Ponder of Houston reads "In 17__ three
brothers came from
Scotland to America, settling in Virginia and then South Carolina.
They were
Daniel, James, and Abner Ponder. Abner settled in South Carollina
and had a
least two children: James and Amos Ponder." NOTE DANIEL MAY HAVE
BEEN BORN IN
SCOTLAND!!!

!Family tradition is that Daniel had brothers who went to Georgia:
James, Amos,
and John. (See page 179 of Dunston-Walker-Ponder)

!11/12/1988 Jerry Ponder of Fairdealing, MO, writes "Recently I
learned of a
family Bible of Daniel Ponder, thought by many to be Abner Ponder's
father,
dating back to Buffalo Gap, VA, now in the possession of William P.
Ponder,
Madison, GA. I have asked for copies of the data pages in the Bible
but
haven't heard back from him. Anyway, there are now know to be two
Bibles
in existance (Other one is that of Amos Ponder referred to in letter
of 1904 by
Willis Miles Ponder, g son of Abner) which may hold the key to many
questions
about Abner Ponder...As soon as I learn anything, I will get the
information
right ouit to all of the serious Ponder researchers."

!Newsstory appearing in the Hickman Co. Times, 13 Dec 1989, notes
that Daniel
and family moved to York Co, SC, about 1770 and during the Rev. War
Abner and
several of his brothers bought in the Battles of Kings mountains and
Cowpens.
Afterwards, they enlisted for six additional months as members of
the SC
Militia.

Historical Information (Prince William County, VA) "Friends of the Occoquan Mills"
"In 1734, Occoquan was identified as a town early. There were public warehouses for tobacco, which was then shipped to many foreign ports. In 1749, Charles Ewell and John Ballendine established iron furnaces on the Occoquan River [completed?] in 1755. (A water powered Country Grist Mill operated until 1890.) In 1758, John Ballendine built Rockledge, his 11 room home overlooking the town. Ballendine, an industrial entrepreneur of his time, is considered the founder of Occoquan."

City of Winchester, VA (Tours)
http://xroads.virginia.edu/~hyper/vaguide/tour01.html :
"Bel Air was built about 1740 by Major Charles Ewell. Marianne Ewell, his daughter, was married here to Dr.James Craik, surgeon general of the Continental armies; and in 1795, Fanny Ewell, granddaughter of the builder, married Mason Locke Weems (1759-1825). Weems, a Marylander, was ordained a clergyman by the Archbishop of Canterbury in 1784 and returned to take charge of a Maryland parish. He was not particularly happy in the church and had such difficulty making a living that he exchanged preaching for book peddling. Marriage anchored him only temporarily. After the death of his father-in-law, Colonel Jesse Ewell, in 1806, Parson Weems, who had become both author and bookseller, moved his family to Bel Air (on which he held a mortgage), where he visited them briefly at intervals as he journeyed up and down the Atlantic seaboard. His many moral tracts and his biographies of William Penn and General Francis Marion were eclipsed by that egregious mixture of fact and fiction: A History of the Life and Death, Virtues and Exploits of General George Washington, With Curious Anecdotes Equally Honorable to Himself and Exemplary to His Young Countrymen. The chronicler of the 'cherry tree' and 'Spanish dollar' episodes lies in the Ewell graveyard behind the house."

Additional Source: Hayden, "Virginia Genealogies" p.335. Data entered by Paul A. Jensen 7 Dec 2003: "Of Bewley, Lancaster Co., VA" "Captain Ewell was vestryman of Dettengen Par., P.W. Co., June 1, 1645; was paid 541 lbs. tobacco for a book for the Parish, Oct. 14, 1645; was Church Warden Oct. 4, 1746-7; ordered then to buy a large Prayer Book for the Church, (Par. Reg.) he was a mem. Va. Grand Jury, Apr. 1745. Charles Ewell, pro. No. 3, retired from the Commission of Peace, K. G. Co., 1745."

There have been references to other manors built in Virginia. Bel Air (Bel Ayr) was built by Charles Ewell in Stafford Co. Virginia and it still exists today.

"All of Bertrand's children were probably born in the family home of 'Buck Hall' in Lancaster Co., VA.
"Major Bertrand Ewell was a very active man both in the practice of law as well as in business. Major Bertrand's home was called 'Buck Hall'. He was Church Warden in 1755; Vestryman of Dettingen Parish 1749-1751; was listed as 'Justice' 1743-1754; Surveyor for Price William County 1759.
"When the town of Dumfries was enlarged in 1761 by Act of Ass'y, it did so by condemning land belonging to Major Bertrand Ewell.
"According to British Mercantile Claims from Dumfries, Bertrand died insolvent and his son Maj. Charles refused to pay the claims on him as well as for Charles's brother Thomas W. Ewell."

Additional Source: Hayden, "Virginia Genealogies" p.335. Data entered by Paul A. Jensen 7 Dec 2003:
"Maj. Ewell was a vestryman of Dettengen Par., Nov. 1749-51; church warden, 1955; styled "Major" in official documents; justice, 1743-1754; surveyor for P. W. Co., 1759. Bertrand Ewell, gent., and Frances his wife, deeded lands Fauq. Ball to B. Ewell. The town of Dumfried, Va. was in 1761 enlarged by Act of Ass'y, by condemning the land of B. Ewell, etc. (Hen. VII., 424, 472.) Major Ewell's will dat. Apr. 21, 1786, pro. P.W. Co., Jan. 6, 1794, gives all his est. to his wife and children. Charles to inherit the mother's part. The record of his children is not full. It is drawn from charts and wills. The Bible of Charles, son of Maj. E., contains his record as the 18th child of Maj. Bertrand E.
"He was pro. also Colonel of the P.W. Militia or County. Lieut. in 1756, but in the absence of more positive data he is here recorded as Major. Col. Washington, in his notes of the events of 1756, when he was in command of the Va. forces at Winchester, mentions, under May 6, 1756, the arrival of the P. W. Militia, adding, 'an hour later Colonel Ewell came to town.' (Writings of Washington, I., 271)."

Additional Source: Hayden, "Virginia Genealogies" p.333. Data entered by Paul A. Jensen 7 Dec 2003: "Dr. Jesse Ewell of Dumblane, P.W. Co., Va., aged 87 in 1889, wrote in 1869 that Charles Ewell came to Va. from England, 1690, with two brothers, names unknown, having obtained from the Proprietory Government in London a contract to build the first capitol at Williamsburg, to which place the seat of Colonial government was, about that time, to be removed from Jamestown. Of the two brothers of Charles, one settled south of the James R. in Princess Ann or Norfolk Co., and the other in Accomac or Northumberland Co. Charles located in Lancaster Co. Col. Benjamin S.
