Dad loved the mountains, and especially loved to go to his cabin at Grizzly Flats, which is 25 miles east of Placerville, Ca. Dad and his father built the cabin in about 1944. He had bought 15 acres from Elwood Morrey. His father and two sisters and one brother also had cabins up there. Dad liked to write and eat, and also liked his whiskey and beer. He enjoyed people, but also liked times of solitude. We would go up to grandpa Jefferis's cabin in the evenings and play poker. Dad died of a heart attack in 1968.
Dad worked for Hercules Powder Co. in Hercules, Ca, for 25 years. He was a supervisor, first for Black Powder during WWII, that is why he didn't have to go into the Army, because the government needed black powder for the war effort.

Grandpa had two boys and two girls. He worked as Postmaster in Oakland, Ca for many years and retired as such. He was a very quite and dignified man. He would buy a new Buick, sometimes, every year. My dad bought Buicks most the time too. He loved his cabin in Grizzly Flats. He liked to fish.

Mom liked to do so many things. She made braided wool rugs from old wool coats she bought at Goodwill. She knitted, put up wall paper, layed brick, loved to garden and had a real green thumb, she could grow anything. She was a member of the Loom Society and had a huge loom she made rugs on. She smoked and liked to have a glass of beer. She was always trying to gain weight, but just couldn't. She was about 105 pounds most of her life. She liked maple furniture and loved to decorate her home. She always had to be doing something, she had so much nervous energy. When dad died she felt so alone she had to find someone to marry. She went on a cruise to Hawaii and met a man that told her about New Port Beach. She moved there with my little brother Brint. She met a rich, retired banker whom she married. He knew alot of society people in New Port Beach and Palm Beach and she just loved those couple of years she was married to him. His name was Chester Grant.

highlow hall 4
Rotting Ghost - Once the most haunted house in Derbyshire, it has lost that designation because of declining activity over the years. Now a bed and breakfast this 16th century house can be booked for the night so that you can attempt to experience paranormal activity. The amazing thing about Highlow Hall is that a curse was placed on the male members of the family. The story says that Sir Nicholas Eyre courted the two sisters of the last male heir of the house in hopes to gain the entire fortune up on his death. He ended up choosing the eldest sister. The younger sister was so distraught that she fled the home, never to be seen again. One day the ghost of the girl appeared before him. She cursed the male members of the family and said that the wealth would only last 14 generations after which time they would be forced to leave Highlow Hall and lose thier fortunes. Oddly enough, as circumstance would have it, the events said by the ghost did happen. The Eyres became very wealthy lords of over 20 manors but their fortunes declined and by 1842 they were bankrupt and forced to leave highlow.

10990 Strong willed, plotted to overthrow brother with lover Eugenius and AD449 but discovered and he was put to death. Forced to marry after 30years of age to a rich senator Flavius Bassus Herculanus, who's characterassured the Emperor that a dangerous wife would be unable to drag himinto any revolutionary schemes. She sent her ring via her trusted eunuchHyacinthus along with a sum of money to Attila (the Hun) asking him tocome and prevent the marriage. Attila took it as a proposal of marriage, claimed her and demanded from Valentinian half the territory over whichhe ruled as a dowry, while making preparations to invade the westernprovinces.

From Ralph W. Mathisen, University of South Carolina:

Justa Grata Honoria, another strong-willed fifth-century woman, was bornin 416 or 417, the daughter of the future emperor Constantius III (421)and Galla Placidia. She was the elder sister of the emperor ValentinianIII (425-455), and she held the title of Augusta. At the orders of herbrother, she was devoted to virginity, a situation she did not find toher liking. Circa 449 she was apprehended in a love affair with theoverseer of her estates; both supposedly were engaged in a plot to seizepower for Honoria. As a result, her lover was executed and she was exiledto Constantinople. She then appealed for help to Attila the Hun, at whichthe eastern emperor Theodosius II, who already had enough problems withthe Huns, immediately dispatched her back to Italy -- with therecommendation that Valentinian turn her over to Attila. Valentinian, meanwhile, was enraged, and only spared her life because of the earnestentreaties of their mother. She then was compelled to marry a reliablesenator named Flavius Bassus Herculanus and subsequently she was keptunder close guard. Attila, meanwhile, chose to interpret Honoria'smissive as a marriage proposal, and demanded half of the western RomanEmpire as her dowry. Attila's ultimatum was refused, and he responded byinvading the western empire in 451 and 452. Honoria's ultimate fate isunknown; she may have been dead by 455.

10991 Subject: Re: Elizabeth of York, et varia: . "Stapleton, though with some hesitation, accepted the marriage [of Judith to Lambert] and this paternity for Judith (Magn. Rot. Scacc. Norm. ii, xxxi, note (i)), although he had earlier (Archaeologia xxvi (1836), pp. 350f.) taken both Adelaide's daughters, Adelaide the younger and Judith, to be the children of Enguerrand II of Ponthieu. We support his earlier view for the following reasons: . (1) Lambert of Lens was killed at the siege of Lille in July-August 1054; yet the endowment published by Stapleton in Archaeologia shows that Adelaide was still residing, at some time after the beginning of 1055, at Aumale, Enguerrand's maternal inheritance, of which Adelaide the younger was the heiress. . (2) Adelaide the elder resided long enough in Aumale to be commonly described in later chronicles as 'comitissa de Albamarla' (despite her marriage at some time before 1070 to Odo of Champagne); she is nowhere called 'comitissa Lensensis'. . (3) While Judith is associated with her mother and sister in the Aumale endowment, there is no mention of Lambert. . (4) Lambert's lands passed to his older brother, Eustace II of Boulogne, and none were assigned to Judith, although an heiress normally inherited at least a portion of her father's property (as Adelaide the younger did), if not the whole (as Agnes/Anna of Ponthieu and Mathilda of Boulogne did)." Judith (I723)

10992 Subject: Re: The first Giffards (n part): When Count William of Eu died shortly before 1040, Gilbert did assume the land and title, but he was assassinated in 1040 and his young sons, RICHARD and Baldwin were forced to flee Normandy, finding safety at the court of BALDWIN V, COUNT OF FLANDERS (RIN 2169). When WILLIAM THE CONQUEROR (RIN 798) married COUNT BALDWIN's daughter, he restored Gilbert's sons to Normandy, although he did not invest them with either Brionne or Eu or a comital title. WILLIAM granted the lordships of Bienfaite and Orbec to RICHARD FITZ GILBERT, and Le Sap and Meules to Baldwin. Although Gilbert's descendants later pressed a claim for Brionne, it was never restored. RICHARD and Baldwin ftizGilbert took part in the Norman conquest of England, and both assumed important positions in THE CONQUEROR's reign. --- Michael Altschul *A Baronial Family in Medieval England: The Clares,1217-1314*, Baltimore MD (Johns Hopkins Press) 1965, p 18-19 Gilbert (I713)
