Thomas Holcombe died on 5 March 1730/31 at Simsbury, Hartford Co., CT, at age 64.8

He left a will on 13 May 1729.

He signed the covenant at the installation of the Rev. Dudley Woodbridge as pastor of Simsbury, 10 April 1697 as did also Ruth Holcombe, either his mother or sister, Elizabeth, probably his wife, and Hannah his sister.

Probate of both Thomas and Rebecca is in Manwaring 3:64. His will is dated 13 May 1729, in which he names wife Rebeckah, eldest son Thomas, son Daniel, five younger sons Daniel, Consider, Return, James and Enoch; two daughters Elizabeth and Rebeckah. Various real estate and a fourth part of the grist mill at the Falls are mentined; executors: wife Rebeckah and son Daniel; witnesses: Nathaniel Higley, John Griffen, Samuel Higley; inventory of ?869/3/7 was taken 7 April 1731 by Benjamin Adams, Joshua Holcombe and Nathaniel Higley. The wife's will was dated 14 April 1731, mentions husband Thomas Holcomb's will, names daughter Rebeckah executrix. This man appears properly on the newly-cut tombstone in Granby Cemetery but his two wives are condensed into one who bears the first name of the first wife and the maiden name of the second. In addition to the children listed by McCracken, McPherson adds also Benoni, Ann, Miriam (b 9 April, 1717), Sarah (b. 5 Sept 1719), making McPhersons total 14 children

Thomas' will: "I, Thomas Holcomb of Simsbury in the County of Hartford, do make this my last will and testament: I give to my wife, Rebeckah, 1/3 part of my moveable estate, to her and her dispose forever, my two guns only excepted. Also, I give her the improvement of the 1/3 part of all my improvable land during all the time she remains my widow, and also the improvement of 1/2 of my dwelling house, both lower and upper rooms, and cellar. I give to myeldest son, Thomas Holcomb, 6 acres of land lying on the north endo of that land I bought of Bissell, west of that I have already given him, being the north corner of myland. I give unto my son Daniel Holcomb 3 acres of land where his house and orchard now standeth, and that free from any incumbrance of improvement by my widow. I give unto my five younger sons, viz., Daniel Holcomb, Consider Holcomb, Return Holcomb, James Holcomb, and Enoch Holcomb, all my lands within fence, both meadow and upland, with all the remainder of the land I bought of Bissell, with all the land given and measured out to me in the last division, and also my lott of land under Popatunock, to them in equal shares. I give to my four younger sons, Consider, Return, James, and Enoch, with my two daughters, Elizabeth and Rebeckah, all the lands that shall or may be set out to me, or properly appertaining to my estate, my Town division agreed on, to them in equal shares; but in case the Town division shall be nullified and a division be made to the proprietors, that then my will is that my two eldest sons, Thomas and Daniel, shall have equal shares with my six other children last named, if such a division be made to the proprietors. I give to my sons, Consider and James, my dwelling house and barn, with my fourth part of the grist mills at the Falls to be to them in equal shares. HOLCOMB, Capt. Thomas (I17191)

11302 Thomas Holcombe is NOT the son of Gilbert Holcombe and Anne Courtenay
George McCraken writing in The American Genealogist, Vol. 26:109 found that Gilbert Holcomb's oral (noncupative) of 14 October 1623, will stated "d.s.p.", (which means died without issue), and that Gilbert left his estate to his brother-in-law, Richard Bonithon. SEE SOURCE.

SEE IN MEMORIES: Appears Gilbert and Anne Courtenay had no children.

"J. L. Vivian's edition of the Visitations of Devon (Exeter, 1887), p. 474, states categorically that Gilbert Holcombe died at Milor, Cornwall, leaving a nuncupative will 14 Oct. 1623 in which he bequeathed his estate to his brother-in-law, Richard Bonithon. However, Richard Bonithon himself died before execution of the will and his next of kin was nephew John Bonithon (Bonython). The statement contains the abbreviation "d.s.p." which surely stands for "decessit sine prole" and means "died without issue." Since the immigrant Thomas Holcombe must be presumed to have been then living in England, he cannot have been a son of Gilbert Holcombe."

Thomas' history is derived mostly from land and probate records

At the time of Thomas' birth, the Renaissance was ending as was the reign of Queen Elizabeth I. Perhaps one of the major events of his childhood was the publishing of the King James Bible, which may have affected his life more than any other event of the early 17th century. The Mayflower landed in Plymouth in 1620 and Thomas certainly would have heard of it and perhaps been excited by the possibilities for a young man. The Colony of Massachusetts was founded in 1628 and the Colony of Connecticut was founded in 1633. The stage was set for the second wave of English colonists of which Thomas was a part.

Unknown Ancestry

The early published genealogies, Seaver on his page 8, and McPherson on her page 9, listed his parents as Gilbert Holcombe and Ann Courtenay. Neither of these writers cites specific references for this statement and there is evidence to prove the contrary. Both of these authors apparently used the Hiram Frank Holcomb Genealogical Research Collection at the Connecticut Historical Society, call number GEN029. This ancestry, unfortunately, has been perpetuated across the internet.

Shortly after the publication of McPherson's work, George McCracken wrote (TAG 26:109): Our two genealogies of the Holcombe family, those of Jesse Seaver, The Holcomb(e) Genealogy (Philadelphia, 1925) and of Hannah Elizabeth Weir (Mrs. Lewin D.) McPherson, The Holcombes, Nation Builders (Washington, 1947) both leave us with the impression that it is all but proved that the parents of Thomas Holcombe of Dorchester, Mass., and Windsor, Conn., were Gilbert Holcombe of Hull, Devon, and of his wife, Ann Courtenay, daughter of Peter Courtenay of Vrotonin, Cornwall.
Neither of these writers cites specific references for this statement and there is evidence to prove the contrary. J. L. Vivian's edition of the Visitations of Devon (Exeter, 1887), p. 474 [IN MEMORIES], states categorically that Gilbert Holcombe died at Milor, Cornwall, leaving a nun-cupative will dated 14 Oct. 1623 in which he bequeathed his estate to his brother-in-law, Richard Bonithon. The statement contains the abbreviation "d.s.p." which surely stands for "decessit sine prole" and means "died without issue." Since the immigrant Thomas Holcombe must be presumed to have been then living in England, he cannot have been a son of Gilbert Holcombe.

McCracken then goes on to dispute other conclusions made by McPherson about Thomas' heritage.

Several early authors state he was a member of Reverend Ephraim Huit's church, and Huit was from Kenilworth in Warwickshire. But, no Holcomb births or records were found from the Diocesan Court at Worchester. The Register of Wroxal, 300 @24, for the year 1634 did list the following; Sarah Huit daughter of Ephraim and Isabell his wife was baptized, and Nathaniel Griswold the son of Samuel Griswold and Anne his wife was baptized. Bowman has found clues recently that Thomas may have been from county Somerset, the city of Bridgewater. She has recently discovered that one of the early Holcomb births in Connecticut was recorded as James the eighth. This could be a clue to ancestry of Thomas Holcomb in that the birth occurred in the third generation of American Holcomb's, i.e. not time to have had eight generations.

Bowman lists the ancestry of Gilbert and Ann Courtney Holcomb in her Volume 2 without resolving the question of Thomas' parentage in order that future researchers not duplicate others' efforts in delineating this line.

Most recently (October 25, 1998), Bowman updated her Volume 2 with the comment that Christopher was the most likely ancestor of Thomas. The birth and death dates normally assigned to the son of Christopher are not correct nor the marriage to Joan Prideaux. The birth and death dates are those of Thomas, the actor, of London who married Francis Bartlett.

In 2018, for the first time since McCracken, David Williams, a published British researcher, investigated the possibilities of a lineal descent for the Southern Holcomb(e) lines from the Holcombes of Hole in Devon and/or their cadet branch of Brownslate in Pembrokeshire. In the "Magazine of Virginia Genealogy", Vol. 56, No. 4, page 278, he repeats previous disclaimers about Gilbert: "Gilbert sold the estate and mansion of Hole in 1605 to the Bartlett family . . . " and "died without issue in 1623 leaving his estate to his brother-in-law, Richard Bonython." He cites the will of Gilbert and parish registers.
************************
Gilbert was eldest son of Thomas Holcombe and Margaret Trethurffe. He Married Ann Courtenay of Votton, Cornwall in about 1594. In about 1600, he sold the Holcombe estate at Hole, Devon, England to Mr Mallock & Ellis Bartlett. The estate was subsequently renamed Down Ralph.

HOLCOMBE, Gilbert (I17936)

11303 Thomas Holland (also known as de Holland), 2nd Earl of Kent, 3rd Baron Holand KG (1350/1354-25 April 1397) was an English nobleman and a councillor of his half-brother, King Richard II of England.

Family and early Life
Thomas Holland (or de Holand) was born in Upholand, Lancashire, in 1350 or 1354 (sources differ on his birth year). He was the eldest surviving son of Thomas Holland, 1st Earl of Kent, and Joan "The Fair Maid of Kent". His mother was a daughter of Edmund of Woodstock, 1st Earl of Kent, and Margaret Wake. Edmund was in turn a son of Edward I of England and his second Queen consort Marguerite of France, and thus a younger half-brother of Edward II of England.

His father died in 1360, and later that year, on 28 December, Thomas became Baron Holand. His mother was still Countess of Kent in her own right, and in 1361 she married Edward, the Black Prince, the son of King Edward III.

Military career
At sixteen, in 1366, Holland was appointed captain of the English forces in Aquitaine. Over the next decade he fought in various campaigns, including the Battle of N?jera, under the command of his stepfather Edward, the Black Prince. He was made a Knight of the Garter in 1375.

Richard II became king in 1377, and soon Holland acquired great influence over his younger half-brother, which he used for his own enrichment. In 1381, he succeeded as Earl of Kent.

Later years and death
Prior to his death, Holland was appointed Governor of Carisbrooke Castle. Holland died at Arundel Castle, Sussex, England on 25 April 1397.

Marriage and children
On 10 April 1364 Holland married Lady Alice FitzAlan, daughter of Richard FitzAlan, 10th Earl of Arundel by his wife Eleanor of Lancaster. Lady Alice was later named as a Lady of the Garter. By his wife he had three sons and six daughters. All the sons died without legitimate children, whereupon the daughters and their issue became co-heiresses to the House of Holland. The children were as follows:

Sons
1.) Thomas Holland, 3rd Earl of Kent, 1st Duke of Surrey (1374-7 January 1400), eldest son and heir, created Duke of Surrey. Died without children.

2.) Edmund Holland, 4th Earl of Kent (6 January 1384-15 September 1408), heir to his elder brother. Died without legitimate children, but had an illegitimate child by his mistress Constance of York.

3.) John Holland, died without children

Daughters
By his daughters' marriages, he became the ancestor of many of the prominent figures in the Wars of the Roses, including Richard Plantagenet, 3rd Duke of York (father of Kings Edward IV and Richard III), Henry Tudor (later King Henry VII), and Warwick the Kingmaker, father of queen consort Anne Neville. He was also an ancestor of queen consort Catherine Parr, the sixth and last wife of King Henry VIII. His daughters were as follows:

1.) Eleanor I Holland (1373-October 1405), (who bore the same first name as her younger sister, alias Alianore) married twice:
Firstly to Roger Mortimer, 4th Earl of March (1374-1398), heir presumptive to his mother's first cousin King Richard II (1377-1399). Her only child and sole heiress to the Mortimer claim was Anne Mortimer. Following the deposition of Richard II in 1399 by his own first cousin, the Lancastrian Henry Bolingbroke, (who ruled as King Henry IV (1399-1413), Anne Mortimer's claim to the throne of England was pursued by her son Richard of York, 3rd Duke of York (1411-1460) which drawn-out struggle formed the basis of the Wars of the Roses.
Secondly she married Edward Charleton, 5th Baron Cherleton

2.) Joan Holland (c. 1380-2 April 1434), married Edmund of Langley, 1st Duke of York

3.) Margaret Holland (1385-31 December 1439), married first John Beaufort, 1st Earl of Somerset, and second Thomas of Lancaster, 1st Duke of Clarence

4.) Elizabeth Holland, who married Sir John Neville (c.1387 -before 20 May 1420), eldest son and heir of Ralph Neville, 1st Earl of Westmorland, and by him had three sons, Ralph Neville, 2nd Earl of Westmorland, John Neville, Baron Neville, and Sir Thomas Neville, and a daughter, Margaret Neville.

5.) Eleanor II Holland (1386-after 1413), (who bore the same first name as her eldest sister, alias Alianore) married Thomas Montacute, 4th Earl of Salisbury

6.) Bridget Holland, who became a nun

11306 Thomas immigrated in 1635 on the ship "Susan and Ellen." It is said he was one of three brothers who came to America. Thomas lived in Chelmsford, Reading and Groton, MA.

INSCRIPTION ON THOMAS PARKER'S TOMBSTONE:
"Reader weep, prepare to dy, I say,
For death by none will be said nay;
One of the 7 of this church foundation,
So to remain 'til the powerful voice say
Rise in health a glorious habitation.
A pattern of piety and of peace
But now, alas, how short his race.
Here we mourn, and mourn we must,
To see Zion's stones, like GOLD LAID IN THE DUST."
--courtesy of Mary Beth Wheeler.

Thomas founded the church of Reading where he was Deacon.

Note: Vice President Dick Cheney is a descendant.

Thomas was listed as age 30 years on ship records of "Susan and Ellen" which sailed out of London March 11, 1635. The Ship Master was Edward Payne. He landed first in Lynn Mass. then moved to Reading, Mass. where he established a church -- was named Deacon. Married Amy in 1635. He was made a Free Man on 17 May 1637 at Lynn and served as a select man in 1652,1653,1657, and 1661 .

According to Wikipedia, Parker after arriving in Lynn, Mass. in 1638 he was either the first or one of the first, settlers of what became the town of Reading. It was first known as Lynn Village, but became incorporated in 1644 as Reading, with a total of seven families living in seven houses. There is evidence that Parker was"conspicuous in naming the town" and that he was related to the Parker family of Little Norton, England, who owned land by the name of Ryddinge. Parker was a selectman of Reading and was appointed a judicial commissioner. He owned 200 acres of land on the north side of Ipswich River, but his homestead bordered the east side of Wakefield (then part of Reading) Common, just northeast of today's Wakefield Town Hall.

_______________________

Thomas Parker emigrated on the ship "Susan and Ellin", departing London, England on 11 Mar 1635. The ship was fitted by Sir Richard Saltonstall. Because of a connection between Sir Richard Saltonstall and the Parkers of Browsholme (his granddaughter Mary Sunderland married an Edward Parker, born 1602), some have speculated Thomas Parker was part of the Parkers of Browsholme. There is no documentary evidence to support the conjecture. On the ship list, he gave his age as 30, placing his birth about 1605.

Thomas Parker settled first in Lynn, MA, removing to Reading, MA a few years later, where he was one of seven founding member of the town's first church. He was named deacon of the church in 1645. He died 12 Aug 1683, nine days after making his will, dated 3 Aug 1683, proved 18 Dec 1683. In the 19th century, a number of old gravestones were discovered in a building, including that of the Thomas Parker. The discovered gravestones were then placed together in a section of the cemetery, not over the actual graves.

Based on the birth estimate from his gravestone, some researchers have also tried identifying Thomas Parker as the son of John Parker and Jane Bates who was baptized on 31 Mar 1609 at Norton, Derbyshire, Eng. This Thomas, however, was buried on 18 Jul 1609. Other researchers have tried to place his birth in Cholderton, Wiltshire. Parker was a common surname, as Thomas was a common given name. There were plenty of Thomas Parkers whose baptisms in England can be found between 1605-1609. No documentation is known to confirm the origins of Deacon Thomas Parker of Reading, MA.

From Genforum
Doing research in Meriwether Co. Ga. today and ran across a book called OLD FIRST DISTRICT O F MERIWETHER CO. GA. AND ITS PEOPLE complied by Mary J Gilbert and Charlotte Daniel. In it is quite a lenghty profile on The George Owen Family. George Owen was born in Virginia in 1771, the son of Doctor Thomas Owen. Jane Owen, the sister of George, married Harrison Musgrove in Pitsylvania Co. Virginia, April 16, 1782. Records indicate that the Owen family lived in that county. In the 1780's the Owens had moved to Wilkes Co. Ga. and George Owen, while living there, was given Power of Attorney, November 1792, by his brother Glenn Owen, Thomas Owen, and Harrison Musgrove, his brother-in-law, to act for them in a legal matter. (will abbreviate from here) Doctor Thomas Owen and some of his children moved to Greene Co. Ga. where in 1797 Thomas Owen,Jr. died. In 1805, Doctor Thomas Owen died, and in his will he names his son George as executor. The legatees of his extate were his daughters, Ann Rutledge, Jane Musgrove, and his sons, Glenn Owen and George Owen. Also mentioned were Mary McCain and her son William McCain. George then moves to Monroe Co in an area that later became Butts Co. then he moved to Meriwether Co. There's more that may interest you. If this seems to fit e-mail me and I'll send you a copy of the whole thing. Good luck, Sharron Nehring

11311 Thomas Rogers Sergent at Law Esq
Thomas Rogers of Bradford-on-Avon, Wiltshire, England Esq.
Born - Benham Valence, a Furneaux mansion

2nd husband of Katherine Courtenay
Thomas Rogers (4th generation) never claimed the property of his father so it went to his sister.

Thomas chose instead to practice law. He went to Oxford University and ultimately settled in Bradford in Wiltshire. He became an honorable and distinguished lawyer. In 1478, when he was 43 years old, under appointment by the Crown he was created "Serviens ad Legem," a life office bestowed because of professional attainments and worth of character. He was a great influence in his community and amassed a considerable fortune. He was appointed Sergeant-at-Law, a little before his first marriage. A son William was born of this marriage, and from reading the Will of Katherine Courteney, it appears there was also a brother to William named John. After the death of his first wife, he married Catherine de Courtenay. She was the daughter of Sir Philip de Courtney, Knight of Powderham Castle in Devon. She and Thomas had one son, George Rogers

Note: The CP Corrections website provides a little more information and indicates that Thomas had a previously unknown 1st wife, Eleanor (d. bef. 1480), daughter of Henry Percy (d. 1461). She may have died very early, without having resided with Thomas (arranged marriages were often contracted at an early age), since she wasn't mentioned in Thomas' will, as his deceased 2nd wife & surviving 3rd wife were. The only record of Eleanor Percy is a pedigree of the Percy family compiled in the 1480s which showed a daughter of Henry married to a Lord de la Warr.

11337 Title: Magister Equitum Praesentalis
Note: Theodosius the Elder was a senior military officer serving in the Western empire and rose to become the magister equitum praesentalis under the emperor Valentinian I from late 368 until his execution in early 375
Birth: ABT 316
Death: 375 executed in Carthage
Note: Theodosius' father was executed at roughly the same as his accession to Emperor, and much speculation has centred on the relationship between these events. A general consensus seems to have emerged, however, that the future emperor was forced into retirement shortly after the execution of his father at Carthage in Africa during the winter of 375/6. The same court faction which had engineered the death of his father managed to persuade Valentinian to dismiss him also, or so the consensus goes.

Subject: BINDER Holzgerlingen
Hello
I am also researching BINDER from Holzgerlingen. In your Web site you have as your earliest a BINDER Hansin married to Catharina I have the following: BINDER Hans, born in Holzgerlingen, died in Holzherlingen married to N.N. Catharina, born in
Holzgerlingen, died 26. Apr. 1598 in Holzgerlingen Child: (I have only from one child the information, the others are in your web-page) BINDER Hans, born 10 Oct 1595 in Holzgerlingen, died 1 Sep 1672
married in Holzgerlingen to FROMM Barbara, born in Holzgerlingen Children:
1. BINDER Hans Jacob, born 19. Jan. 1620, died 11 Feb. 1697(all Holzgerlingen)
2. BINDER Hanss, born 25 Dec. 1628, died 3 Feb 1703 (all Holzgerlingen)
It looks like your Hansin and Catharina are identical to my Hans and Catharina. Have you got a little bit more information as on your Web page?
The Binder line is actually the line of my wife. I am born in Edenkoben, this is the village, Michael PALMER referes to in his reference "RIETWEIL Hans aus dem Berner Gebiet, bisher Hirt in Siebeldingen.
I have seen in your Web-page that you referd under "Cunrad BINDER, born 19 Jun 1601, died 20 Nov. 1668, in Plzas, Freckenfeld. Should this not be a typing mistake and read: Pfalz, Freckenfeld, ? (it is several times mentioned )

11343 To No?l J. Harris Robertson You definitely have the proof that William Harris of Southminster is the son of John Herrys of Prittlewell & not Arthur Harris who married Joan Percy. "Glenn Gohr"

More About WILLIAM HARRIS, SIR: Aka (Facts Pg): Sir William of Prittlewell Occupation: Merchant in London

Probablly never knighted. In his will he refers to himself as the Elder of Southminster parish in the County of Essex Squire and Neither does the courtindicate him either as Knight or Sir

The main records we have to rely on for William Harris of Southminster are the Visitations of Essex 1552. Essentially that information tells us the basics about the first three generations. William Harris first married Joanna Smith, had son and heir William who married Jane Semer, and who likewise had a son named William. The Visitations of Essex 1558 go on to list all three wives, all thirteen of his children, as well as a number of his grandchildren. Since he was a prominent Essex official, there are other court records that substantiate the time period in which he lived. His will in 1556 confirms five of his sons, that his last wife was named Agnes (Rutter), and lists the properties he owned. The five surviving sons that were still living in 1556 were William and Vincent by the first marriage, Arthur by the second marriage, and Christopher and Edward by the third marriage. (A full copy of the will submitted by No?l Robertson can be found in the archives of Harris-Va on Rootsweb.) Even if the Visitations of Essex are inaccurate, we know that he did have those five sons, and he names them in that order in his will. The oldest son William actually does not receive a legacy from his father in the will. Wording in the will implies that the son William Harris had already been provided for and was well established in 1556. It is stated that he had already been assigned property that was not named in the will. We do not know the location of that property.

Although there are few actual parish records for the early 1500s, we can estimate by various sources that William Harris married his first wife Johanna Smith around 1515. With thirteen children, if William Harris averaged one child every two years over all three wives, that would put the last child being born in 1541. We already know from the 1556 will that Christopher and Edward Harris were still underage in 1556 confirming that Edward, the last son, was probably not born until around 1540-1545. If William, the first son, was born shortly after the 1515 marriage, then he was just coming of age, marrying, and having his first son William in that same 1540-1545 time period. That means William Harris of Southminster had a son Edward and a grandson William who were approximately the same age.

11344 Todd Farmerie has Alice as daughter of John & Isabel Harrington. Henry Sutliff found other sources that have her as daughter of the son John & Margaret Gerard. I think the dates would favor Todd's source as correct. BOTELER, Alice (I12828)
