| 352 | Biography Gottfried was born in 1830. He was the son of Gottfried Strauss and Ilsabe Unknown. He passed away in 1897.[1] Gottfried married Henrietta Neuber in about 1860 and 2 children were born in Konigsberg, Prussia (Henrietta Emma and Frederick Strauss). The family came to the U.S. in 1864[2] and three more children were born in the US (Charles, William and Otto Richard Strauss). In the 1875 Census, his father, mother brother Frederick and sister Mary had moved in with them. [3] The family originated in Königsberg, (Królewiec in Polish), which has been part of Russia, Poland and Germany and was founded in 1255. A Baltic port city, it successively became the capital of the State of the Teutonic Order, the Duchy of Prussia and the provinces of East Prussia and Prussia. Königsberg remained the coronation city of the Prussian monarchy from 1701 onwards, though the capital was Berlin. From the thirteenth to the twentieth centuries on, the inhabitants spoke predominantly German, although the city also had a profound influence upon the Lithuanian and Polish cultures. It was a publishing center of Lutheran literature; this included the first Polish translation of the New Testament, printed in the city in 1551, as well as the first book in Lithuanian and the first Lutheran catechism, both printed in Königsberg in 1547. | 361 | Biography Identity of Bush Smith: Lt. William T Anderson married Bush Smith 3 March 1864. His brother, JamesAnderson, reportedly married Bill's widow. James Anderson married Mary Erwin 21 October 1868 in Grayson County, Texas It is easy to assume that Mary Erwin was another name for Bush Smith. There is evidence beyond a reasonable doubt that Mary Erwin was not Bush Smith - Mary was not quite 12; the Bible of her sister, Martha Erwin Maxwell, has an 1866 or 1867 arrival date of the Erwin family in Grayson County; William H. Erwin identified Mary as one of his 7 minor children in his February 1867 Grayson County guardianship petition. Who was Bush Smith? These are known facts: J. M. Anderson married Malinda Anderson 22 August 1866. Malinda Smith, born about February 1850, was the oldest child of Burrell P. Smith and Sarah Ann Henderson. Malinda Smith would have been 14 years old when Lieut. William Anderson was married 3 March 1864. The late husband's surname rather than the widow's maiden name is usually found on Grayson County marriage licenses, i. e. If Malinda Smith was the widow of Bill Anderson, she would probably be identified as Malinda Anderson in a second marriage. A marriage license for Malinda Smith has not been found in Grayson County records. The 1859 Grayson County petition of Sarah "Sallie" Henderson Smith identified her four children as Malinda A., B. P., Paulina, and Virginia. The 1900 census shows that Sallie was the mother of 5 children, and 3 were living. (Burrell Perry Smith Jr., Paulina Smith Whitehurst, and Virginia Smith Burney were living) Burrell Perry Smith Jr. and Mary Lucy Erwin Anderson named their first child, Virginia Bush Smith. Burrell Perry Smith Jr. had a first cousin, Bush Smith, born in 1870. Jim Cummins, in his book, referred twice to the mother of Mrs. Anderson as Mrs. Smith. Conclusion based on currently available information: Mary Lucy Erwin was not Bush Smith. Malinda Smith, daughter of Burrell P. and Sarah Henderson Smith was Bush Smith. Notes from Grayson County Texas: SMITH, Burrell P., deceased. Dated 17 Aug 1859. Document #1. Sarah H. Smith and James H. Tuttle state that Burrell P. Smith departed this life 15 August 1859. Document #2. Petition of Sarah H. SMITH. On outside of document lists four (4) children viz: Malinda A. SMITH; B. P. SMITH; Paulina SMITH and Virginia H. SMITH. Inside of document states that children are under 14 years of age. Document #3. On very small pieces of paper states that Paulina married Charles WHITEHURST, no date given. Document #4. Annual report dated 26 Nov 1860. Some names mentioned: J. MCCARTY; Robert BEATTY; R. L. BULLOCK; A. MYERS; Thomas J. WOOD and E. Scora. Document #5. Petitioner Sarah H. Smith states that she has since married and that her name was Sarah H. Erwin. This is dated 2 December 1869. Malinda was born in 1850. | 362 | Biography Ilsabe (Unknown) Strauss migrated from Poland to United States. Ilsabe was born in 1808. Her daughter named Konis (Konisberg) as her mothers birthplace. [1] She passed away in 1875.[2] Konigsberg was Polish after the war with the Russian Empire in 1763, but pledged allegiance to Russia and was supplying arms to Poles, Russians and Lithuanians. At the time of her birth Konigsberg had became the capital of the newly formed province of East Prussia in 1773, which replaced the Province of Prussia in 1773. By 1800 the city was approximately five miles (8.0 km) in circumference and had 60,000 inhabitants, including a military garrison of 7,000, making it one of the most populous Prussian cities of the time. However, after war with Napoleon in 1806 it was home to an unstable population of refugees and revolution and demonstrations lasting for many years. Elisabeth left Konisberg and met and married Gottfried in about 1828, probably near Paslek, Osztyn, Poland. Together they had at least 4 children and evidence supports this in the 1875 Kansas Census. [3] Mother Elizabeth is found in the eldest son's household of Gottfried age 46 and Henrietta (mis sp. Herther) age 44, together with their 5 children and Elizabeth's husband Gottfried at age 73, and two children Mary age 30 and Fred age 27 in the large household, in Kansas. Their children were Gottfried born 1830, Johann born 1832 Mary Elizabeth born 1844, and Frederick B. born 1846 Research Note Careful please. Often confused with another Ilsabe Schulz and Gottfried Strauss in Meseberg, Germany and their daughter born in 1928 Mary Elizabeth Strauss. | 365 | Biography Jacob was born in 1763. Johann Jacob, son of Jacob Weiss & Anna Elisabeth, was born on 10 May 1763 and baptised on 12 May 1763 in Klingenmuenster, Pfalz, Bayern, Deutschland.[1] In German families in the 19th century, the first two or three names listed as the child's name were usually the names of the baptismal sponsors, men for boys and women for girls. The last of the 'first' names listed was usually the name used by the child, but as an adult they sometimes chose one of the other names to use. The sponsors were often grandparents, aunts and uncles so can provide clues to other ancestors. Johann Jacob used his middle name Jacob for most of his life as his father did. Jacob married Anna Elisabeth Kaÿser on 30 August 1785 in Klingenmuenster. Together they had five children. Anna and Jacob's son Johannes Weis was born on 29 September 1786 in Klingenmünster, Klingenmünster, Bergzabern, Pfalz, Bayern, Deutschland.[2] Anna and Jacob's daughter Juliana Weiss was baptised on 5 January 1789 in Klingenmuenster, Pfalz, Bayern, Deutschland.[3] Anna and Jacob's daughter Anna Maria Weiss was born 1790 in Klingenmünster, Klingenmünster, Bergzabern, Pfalz, Bayern, Deutschland. Anderson committed suicide. Fathers Demise: From "THE REVILLE" Linn Creek, Camden County, Missouri, Thursday, January 19, 1899 Double Murder George W. Anderson and Annie Woresback Brained With an Ax Our usually quiet town was startled late last Friday evening, as it has not been for years by the intelligence that Annie Woresback had been found dead in the door of the old Wm.. Lane house, 2 ½ miles northeast of town, occupied by Geo. W. Anderson and the woman and that as Anderson had not been seen since Wednesday, the two had probably been murdered. The ghastly discovery was made by Wm. L. Hammer, of Montreal, who had called to see Mr. Anderson on business, and informed Mr. Anderson's family, at Erie, of the tragedy before coming in to notify the authorities. Coroner Avery, Drs. Moore and Moulder, Prosecuting Attorney Chalfant and many others repaired to the scene, where about fifty person's had already gathered. Mr. Avery found Mr. Anderson's dead body in an old house used as a corn crib, a few feet from where the woman lay. He had been struck a left handed blow from behind, apparently with the poll of a hand ax, and was lying face down with corn husks in his right hand and a sack in the other. All appearances indicated that while he much have known of the assasin's presence, he had no suspicion of his foul intent, and had been struck down without warning. He had been struck two blows while down. The woman had been struck two blows in the forehead. Her body had fallen partly out of the doorway, and had been further disfigured by hogs. The table had been laid for three, and the meal, supposed to be supper, had evidently been eaten by three persons. The theory of the murder is that their visitor had followed Anderson to the crib while the woman went to milk. After slaying Anderson the murderer had met the woman, who had left a bucket of unskimmed milk on the table, and either to conceal his previous crime or from some deeper motive, had killed her also. What passed between these two --what awful emotions assailed the misguided woman in the presence of a dreadful death- who can conjecture? A watch was placed over the bodies, which were brought to town where an inquest was held, the verdict being that they came to their death at the hands unknown. Anderson's body was turned over to his family and buried at the Conway cemetery, seven miles east of town. The woman's remains were interred on the county farm. On Tuesday night, Newton John, who had been seen in the vicinity, was arrested on suspicion. He had a preliminary hearing yesterday before "Squire" Foster and clearly established an alibi. Anderson was well-known as a farmer, stock raiser and dealer both in this county and in Miller, whence he came some fifteen years ago, and had become quite wealthy, owning several large and valuable farms in both counties. He had recently lived apart from his family, with the Woreback woman, who was raised in Miller county. She was an unmarried sister of John Woresback, sent to the penitentiary from Laclede county several months ago, for stealing a team of horses from Archibald Patterson Jr, near here. The dead man did not usually carry much money on his person, and but few cents was found on his body. An anonymous warning letter was received by Wm. A. Anderson, his eldest son, yesterday, stating that the writer knew who had killed his father, and that the crime was committed Wednesday night. It is not known with certainty that Anderson was seen alive after Wednesday, the place where he lived, being off the common route of travel. The mystery so far baffles all inquiry, and not even the motive can be clearly traced, several probably causes for the crime having been assigned. Anderson leaves a wife, three sons and two daughters. From "The Revielle, Linn Creek, Camden County, MO, April 20, 1899. "We were now in sight of our goal, but we turned aside to attend the sale of the estate of the late George Anderson, who was so mysteriously murdered some months since. We expected to buy some cattel at this sale, but we found a great many stockmen present who seemed to want live stock a great deal more than we did. Everything offered for sale brought exceedingly high prices and the proceeds of the sale amounted to $6,000. | 370 | Biography James Chitwood was born 1720 in Northumberland County, Virginia, to Matthias Chitwood, Sr., and Mary Key). When he was young, his family moved west to what was then Goochland County, Virginia, but is now Powhatan County. His father, Mathias Chitwood, made his will on 8 June 1752 and he left his "Son James Cheatwood one Cow and Calf."[1] In the 1750s, presumably in Virginia, James Chitwood married a woman named Alice whose maiden is unproven, but may have been Carpenter. They lived in Albemarle County, Virginia, in an area that became Buckingham County in 1761. At some point in the 1750s, James Chitwood acquired 200 acres on both sides of Ripley's Creek of the Slate River from Arthur McDaniel. Because McDaniel died before a deed was made, he had to sue the estate. He gained title on 14 January 1760.[2] On the same day, he transferred the land to the churchwardens of Tillotson Parish "for the use of the parish" for £40. .[3] In the 1770s, James Chitwood and his brother Richard Chitwood moved their families south to what was then Tryon County, North Carolina, but later became Rutherford County. Capt. James Chitwood, son of Matthias and Mary (Key) Chitwood and brother to Richard Chitwood, was a Tory during the Revolutionary War and was captured and hung after the battle of King's Mountain NC. "The names of the condemned Tories were --- Colonel Ambrose Mills, Capt. James Chitwood, Capt. Wilson, Capt. Walter Gilkey, Capt. Grimes, Lieutenant Lafferty, John McFall, John Bibby, and Augustine Hobbs. They were swung off the Gallows Oak, three at a time, and left suspended at the place of execution. According to Lieutenant Allaire's account, they died like soldiers --- like martyrs, in their own and friends' estimation. "These brave but unfortunate Loyalists', says Allaire, 'with their latest breath expressed their unutterable detestation of the Rebels, and of their base and infamous proceedings; and, as they were being turned off, extolled their King and the British Government, Mills, Wilson, and Chitwood died like Romans.....The poor Loyalist leaders had been left swinging from the sturdy oak upon which they had been executed. No sooner had the Whigs moved off, than Mrs. Martha Bickerstaff, the wife of Capt. Aaron Bickerstaff who had served under Ferguson, and been mortally wounded at King's Mountain, with the assistance of an old man who worked on the farm, cut down the nine dead bodies. Eight of them were buried in a shallow trench, some two feet deep; while the remains of Capt. Chitwood were conveyed by some of his friends, on a plank, half a mile away to Benjamin Bickerstaff's, where they were interred on a hill still used as a grave-yard." Taken from the book "Kings Mountain and it's Heroes", by Lyman C. Draper As depicted in the book Descendants of Matthias Chitwood compiled by I.O. Chitwood; James Chitwood is the son of Matthias Chitwood and Mary Key. James married Alice and they had 7 sons all born in VA; 1) James born 1752 who married Elizabeth Whiteside died in GA 2) Moses born 1754 and died in AL 3) Shadrack born 1756 who married Margaret and died in AL 4) Joshua born 1758 who married Jane Robinson in VA 1786 5) Joseph born in 1760 6) Pleasant born in 1765 and married Barbara Barnes in NC 1792 and died 1848 in TN 7) Amos born 1768 married Prudence Lattimore 1793 and died in 1843 in IN James Chitwood was a Loyalist and Officer (Captain) during the Revolutionary War living in South Carolina. As depicted in the book King's Mountain and its Heroes by Lyman C Draper; The Battle of Kings Mountain (SC) was a decisive battle and turning point in the Southern Campaign of the American Revolution. British Officer Colonel Ferguson had taken up position on the top of the mountain with Loyalist militia from South Carolina but were overwhelmed in the battle on October 7, 1780 by Patriot militia "Over Mountain Men". Over 400 Loyalist were killed or wounded in the surprise attack by the Patriots. Ferguson was the only British soldier and he died in the battle that lasted about an hour. Over 600 were captured including 9 officers. One of those officers was Captain James Chitwood. The Patriots retreated quickly with the prisoners north into NC. The set up camp and tried and sentenced 39 men to be executed in an infamous proceeding. Three at a time they were hung from a large oak tree known after as the Gallows Oak. Captain James Chitwood was in the first group of three to be hung. With nine hanging from the tree, and three more ready to go a disturbance occurred that caused the hanging to be discontinued and the remaining to be pardoned. The men had been left swinging from the sturdy oak but as soon as the Patriot force moved off, the wife of Captain Biggerstaff (or Bickerstaff) who served under Ferguson and been mortality wounded at the battle, cut them down with the help of a farm hand. Eight were buried in a shallow trench and the remains of Captain Chitwood were taken to the Biggerstaff farm and interred on a hill there. | 381 | Biography Joanna was the daughter of Thomas de Isaac and Matilda Bruce . Robert I, king of Scots, was her maternal grandfather, and David II, king of Scots, was her uncle.[1] [2][3] Historians have speculated that David II may have personally arranged Joanna's marriage to John MacDougall, whom he most likely convinced to return to Scotland to reclaim the lands his family had once held in Argyll.[4] David was interested in having a strong ally in the north to keep the MacDonald clan in check, and one of his first actions on being released from captivity in England in 1358 was to confirm John MacDougall's possession of his family's lands in Lorn.[5] Marriage to John, Lord of Lorn Joana married (first) John MacDougall, Lord of Lorn, sometime before 1362.[6][7][8][2] There were two daughters from this marriage: Janet; m. Robert Stewart of Rossyth[7][9] Isabel; married John Stewart, Knt of Innermeath[10] In 1369 King David II granted Joanna and her husband the lands of Glenlyon in Atholl, to hold until he was able to grant them lands elsewhere of a similiar value.[7] The following year, it was ordered that a quantity of foods abundant in the highlands (i.e. malts, barley, etc) be delivered every year for use in the kings various households, including the household of "the lordship of John of Lorn."[7] John of Lorn was living during 1370, but died probably before September 1372.[7] The last time his name appeared on any official record was 12 October 1371 when Mariota, the widow of Ewen M'Yuar, mortgaged her lands to "John MacAlan, lord of Lorn" for forty pounds sterling.[11] Marriage to Sir Malcolm Fleming Joanna married (second), sometime after Sept 29, 1372 (the date of a charter) and by a papal dispensation dated 12 July 1377 Sir Malcolm Fleming, Knt of Biggar, Lanarkshire, and Cumbernault, and Sheriff of Dumbartonshire.[12][7] There were no children from this marriage. Death The exact date of Joanna's death is unknown, although she appears to have predeceased her second husband. She was buried at Cambuskenneth Abbey in Stirlingshire.[13] Sources ? | 383 | Biography Johann Heinrich was born in 1726. Johann, son of Johann Balzer Keyser & Christina, was born on 30 August 1726 and baptised on 1 September 1726 in Klingenmuenster, Pfalz, Bayern, Deutschland.[1] In German families in the 19th century, the first one or two names listed as the child's name were usually the names of the baptismal sponsors, men for boys and women for girls. The last of the 'first' names listed was usually the name used by the child, but as an adult they sometimes chose one of the other names to use. The sponsors were often grandparents, aunts and uncles so can provide clues to other ancestors. Heinrich used his second name for most of his life. The children also used their second names as their usual name. Heinrich married Anna Barbara Weis in about 1757 in Klingenmünster, Bergzabern, Pfalz, Bayern, Deutschland. Together they had 4 children recorded: Anna and Heinrich's child Juliana Kaÿser was baptised on 5 August 1758 in Klingenmünster, Klingenmünster, Bergzabern, Pfalz, Bayern, Deutschland.[2] Anna and Heinrich's son Johann Jacob Kayser was born 1761 in Klingenmuenster, Pfalz, Bayern, Deutschland. Anna and Heinrich's daughter Anna Kristina Kayser was baptised on 1 April 1763 in Klingenmuenster, Pfalz, Bayern, Deutschland.[3] Anna and Heinrich's daughter Anna Elisa (Elisabetha) Kayser was baptised on 8 July 1766 in Klingenmuenster, Pfalz, Bayern, Deutschland.[4] Daughter Marriage Henrich's daughter Kristina Kayser married Jacob Vogt on 30 August 1785 in Oberhofen, Pleisweiler-Oberhofen, Landkreis Bergzabern, Bayern, Deutschland.[5] Death He passed away in 1772.
