- James Oliphant of Greene County, TN (28 Apr 1776-31 Oct 1855) was the great grandson of Duncan Oliphant the immigrant. This James was married to Jane Rankin (20 Sep 1782-12 Apr 1844). James and Jane (Rankin) Oliphant had nine children, viz.: Elizabeth Sarah, John, Malinda, Polly Ann, James, Hannah, Harriet, Nancy, and William. The following will extract applies:

Son William L. to have plantation. Daughters, Sally Melinda and Harriet to have their support. Other children: Nancy, James, Polly Ann. To daughter, Nancy Russell, $375. To grandson, James O. Hoyal, $375. To grand-daughter, Pollyann Robertson, $375. Interest on money to school my grand children. If negroes unruly, they are to be sold.

Frequently this James Oliphant of Greene County, TN has been confused with the James Oliphant of Rutherford County, TN. (Note that Greene County is in the very easterly part of Tennessee while Rutherford County is in middle Tennessee adjacent to Davidson County where Nashville is located).

JAMES OLIPHANT and his wife JANE RANKIN came from Greene County, Tennessee. James was born in Farquire Co. Virginia in 1776 and died in Greene County, but Dr. JAMES OLIPHANT, the son, settled in McMinn County, after living for a time in both Loudon & Monroe Counties.
