- William was Mayor of Plymouth 1567-8, 1578-9, 1587-90, was a ship owner, the "Griffin" and renowned sea captain and his cruisers were the terror of Spain. His son William sailed with Fenton in 1582, laid the foundation of the Indian Empire, and went to Agra as Ambassador at the Court of the Great Mogul. William founded the East India Company, a vast business empire that extracted many riches from India, and included many ships.
