  Sir Hugh Shirley, inherited Basset estates; Grand Falconer to Henry IV 1400; killed 1403 at Battle of Shrewsbury, being one of those who were dressed as the King and mistaken for him by the enemy. [Burke's Peerage] ---------------------------------------------------------- 1400-1403 Master of King's Hawks. Sir Hugh Shirley, inherited Basset estates; Grand Falconer to Henry IV 1400; killed 1403 at Battle of Shrewsbury, being one of four who were dressed as the King and mistaken for him by the enemy. [Burke's Peerage] The encounter is immortalized by Shakespeare in his play "Henry IV." However, in the play Shakespeare uses dramatic license and he has Sir Hugh killed instead by Douglas. Quote: King Henry: "Hold up thy head, vile Scot, or thou art like never to hold it up again ! The spirits of valiant Shirley, Stafford and Blunt are in my arms."
