      James H. Ewell, "Ewell in America..." p. 64:
      "All of Bertrand's children were probably born in the family home of 'Buck Hall' in Lancaster Co., VA.
      "Major Bertrand Ewell was a very active man both in the practice of law as well as in business. Major Bertrand's home was called 'Buck Hall'. He was Church Warden in 1755; Vestryman of Dettingen Parish 1749-1751; was listed as 'Justice' 1743-1754; Surveyor for Price William County 1759.
      "When the town of Dumfries was enlarged in 1761 by Act of Ass'y, it did so by condemning land belonging to Major Bertrand Ewell.
      "According to British Mercantile Claims from Dumfries, Bertrand died insolvent and his son Maj. Charles refused to pay the claims on him as well as for Charles's brother Thomas W. Ewell."

      "Maj. Ewell was a vestryman of Dettengen Par., Nov. 1749-51; church warden, 1955; styled "Major" in official documents; justice, 1743-1754; surveyor for P. W. Co., 1759. Bertrand Ewell, gent., and Frances his wife, deeded lands Fauq. Co., Sep. 23, 1760 (119), to Nimrod Ashby, being part of grant to Charles Burgess, gent., by pat. of 1176 a., June 17, 1731, conveyed by deed to James and Jesse Ball, by Edwin Conway and James Ball, excr's of Charles Burgess, 1740, and by Jas. Ball to B. Ewell. The town of Dumfried, Va. was in 1761 enlarged by Act of Ass'y, by condemning the land of B. Ewell, etc. (Hen. VII., 424, 472.) Major Ewell's will dat. Apr. 21, 1786, pro. P.W. Co., Jan. 6, 1794, gives all his est. to his wife and children. Charles to inherit the mother's part. The record of his children is not full. It is drawn from charts and wills. The Bible of Charles, son of Maj. E., contains his record as the 18th child of Maj. Bertrand E.
      "He was pro. also Colonel of the P.W. Militia or County. Lieut. in 1756, but in the absence of more positive data he is here recorded as Major. Col. Washington, in his notes of the events of 1756, when he was in command of the Va. forces at Winchester, mentions, under May 6, 1756, the arrival of the P. W. Militia, adding, 'an hour later Colonel Ewell came to town.' (Writings of Washington, I., 271)."
