      James H. Ewell, "Ewells in America..." p. 62: "Charles Ewell is referred in the referenced book as a bricklayer. He m.ca. 1706/10 Mary Ann Bertrand, the d/o Rev. John Bertrand and Charlotte De Joli. John Bertrand with his brother Paul, had escaped from France after the Revocation of the Edict of Nantes. John Bertrand had settled in Rappahanock County, VA. John had two other daughters, Marianna and Charlotte as well as a son, William. Paul Bertrand had settled in Calvert County, MD on a farm called by him 'Cox Hayes'. Rev. John Bertrand had married Charlotte De Joli, the daughter of the Comte de Joli who had escaped from France with the Bertrands. Charles Ewell, Sr. in his published will mentioned his two daughters and three sons."

      Additional Source: Hayden, "Virginia Genealogies" p.333. Data entered by Paul A. Jensen 7 Dec 2003: "Dr. Jesse Ewell of Dumblane, P.W. Co., Va., aged 87 in 1889, wrote in 1869 that Charles Ewell came to Va. from England, 1690, with two brothers, names unknown, having obtained from the Proprietory Government in London a contract to build the first capitol at Williamsburg, to which place the seat of Colonial government was, about that time, to be removed from Jamestown. Of the two brothers of Charles, one settled south of the James R. in Princess Ann or Norfolk Co., and the other in Accomac or Northumberland Co. Charles located in Lancaster Co. Col. Benjamin S. Ewell, LL. D., thinks this Charles was son of John Ewell."

      Additional Source: Hayden, "Virginia Genealogies" p.334: "Charles Ewell, supposed son of Charles Ewell, born in England according to tradition, came to Virginia under contract to build teh State Captol at Williamsburg, 1690. As he was certainly aged 25 at that time, he was pro. born 1660-5. He settled in St. Mary's parish, Lancaster county, Va., bought land near Corotoman Creek of Matthew Meres, and 1000 a. more or less of "Tolliver's Mount" from Thomas Chitwood. He died Lancaster county, 1722; will dat Jan. 13, 1721-2; pro. Lancaster county, Apr. - 1722.* He m. cir. 1705-10, Mary Ann Bertrand, b. --, 1690; d. Feb 12, 1749-50; daughter of Rev. John and Charlotte (de Jolie) Bertrand. She m. (II.) Feb 16, 1724, William Ballendine of Lancaster county (L.); (III) 1742, Major James Ball. (Ball 8, p.63)."
