  • Notes
    • From Daughter Pamela Green - My father was Calvin Pope Green... spelled with no 'e' at the end. It is my understanding that my grandfather added the 'e' because he was applying for a position with the United States Postal Service and wanted to distance himself from a family member who was a bootlegger. That was the story that I was told as I was growing up, although there may be more to it than what I know. All the other members of the family use the Greene spelling, although my father was also the eldest so this may have occurred after he was born. He was born 16 September 1926 and died 21 June 1992. He as a Mariner and one of the Forgotten Heroes of WWII according to his dates of service, and also served in the Army during the Korean War. I am attempting to obtain more information regarding his military records, but have thus far been unsuccessful. I did come across a link that indicated that a Mariner by the name of Calvin Barden, aka CALVIN GREEN, (foster child of a Mr. and Mrs. Charles! Barden of Delaware County NY) had mistakenly been listed as deceased with the newspaper article stating that he had died of Malaria in the Solomon Islands after being stationed in Hawaii. I don't know if this was a reference to my father, but do know that he spent time in Hawaii while in the service. I have also been unable to locate any of his Army records, which may be due to the fire of 1973 that destroyed a tremendous number of veterans records. Nevertheless... I have photographs and some basic information regarding his enlistment, which could be provided for your records.
