  Biography Hardy Hayes was born about 1732, probably in Bertie, North Carolina, the son of John and Phebe Hayes. He is named as a son in the 1778 Bertie settlement of his father's estate. [1] He probably married a first wife whose name is not known about 1750. He married Sarah Freeman, the widow of John or Jacob Hinton, sometime before 1781. She was the daughter of William Freeman and Christian Outlaw. She is named as daughter Sarah Hayes along with her son, Reuben Hinton, in her father's 1781 Gates, North Carolina will. [2][3] She was probably not the mother of any children with Hardy Hayes, as her father's will only makes provisions for her son Reuben Hinton.
