  • Notes
    • Margaret Holand (aka Holland), daughter of Thomas Holand, K.G., Earl of Kent and Alice de Arundel, was born about 1385-1386 (aged 22 in 1408, 26 in 1411, 30 in 1416),[1][2] and before 17 April 1388.[3]
      Marriages and Children

Margaret married to John Beaufort, K.G., illegitimate son of John of Gaunt, K.G., and his mistress (later his third wife) Katherine de Roet, before 28 September 1397,[1][4] when John became marquess of Dorset and Somerset.[3] They had four sons and two daughters:

      Henry, Earl of Somerset[1]
John, 1404-1444,[3] K.G., 1st Duke of Somerset, Earl of Kendal[1]
      Thomas, Count of Perche[1]
      Edmund, c. 1406-1455,[3] K.G., 2nd Duke of Somerset, Count of Mortain[1]
      Joan, Queen of Scotland[1]
      Margaret[1]

Sir John Beaufort died on 16 March 1409/10[3] and his widow remarried to Thomas of Lancaster, K.G., K.B., Duke of Clarence, third son of King Henry IV by his first wife, Mary de Bohun.[1] They were authorized to marry by papal mandate dated 16 August 1410 (they were related in 2nd and 3rd degrees of kindred and 2nd degree of affinity),[1] but their wedding didn't take place until May 1412.[3] They had no children.[1]

Thomas died at the battle of Baugé on 22 March 1421. Margarets sons, John and Thomas Beaufort were captured in that battle as well.[3]

      Legatee

Margaret was co-heiress in 1408 to her brother, Edmond Holand, K.G., 4th Earl of Kent, from whom she inherited the manors of Wakes Colne, Essex, Kingsbury Regis and Queen Camel, Somerset.[1]

      Other

Margaret presented to the church of Horsington, Somerset in 1426 and, in 1428, she presented to the church of Earnshill, Somerset. In 1433 she was granted an exemption from custom from her daughter, Joan Beaufort, Queen of Scotland.[1]

      Death and Burial

Margaret, Duchess of Clarence, Countess of Somerset, died testate on 29 (or 30) December 1439 (or 8 January 1439/40) in the Monastery of St. Saviour's, Bermondsey, Surrey. She was buried with her two husbands at Canterbury Cathedral,[1][4] in St. Michael's chapel (initally St. Anne's chapel).[3]

From Royal Tombs of Medieval England:

Margaret died at Bermondsey Abbey on 30 December 1439. Margaret was interred at Canterbury in St. Michael's Chapel on 8 January 1440. Apparently prior to her death, Margaret had already decided to erect a triple tomb for herself and her two husbands. On 27 January Henry VI instructed the exhumation of the bodies of Somerset and Clarence and their reburial according to the duchess's prior instructions. The triple tomb stands in the center of the chapel and features alabaster effigies and Purbeck marble tomb-chest. Margaret Holland's effigy lies in the center of the tomb with John Beaufort on the left and that of Clarence in the senior position; all three are shown with hands clasped in prayer. Margaret's effigy has a ducal coronet and each husband's effigy is depicted wearing armor.[5]

Inquisitions Post Mortem were held 4 February 1440 through 11 February 1441.[6] The annual value of her lands totaled £952 9s. 8d.[3]
