  • Notes
    • On December 1, 1630, Simon and John Sackett sailed from England on the ship Lyon and landed in the colonies on Feb. 4, 1631. Generations later my grandfather (Alonzo Sackett) was born June 15 , 1869. He arrived in the Kittitas Valley before Washington became a state. Alonzo married Margaret Jane Coble , daughter of Daniel and Sara Coble. The Daniel Cobles came to the Kittitas Valley behind a covered wagon when Margaret was eight years old, They traveled by way of the Oregon Trail. Their family survived one year by baking bread to sell to other travelers. Alonzo and Margaret Sackett lived in the Manastash Canyon, where they raised three boys; Ray Carl, Earl Bascom, and, Asa Joel . Asa Joel (Doc) was my father. Doc married Ida Vera (Patty) Mattox when he was 29. ( Actually 28 according to official records, Ed Page. )
She was from Thorp, Washington and the daughter of Elmer Miles (Maddux) and Mary Edna (Yahne) Mattox. Mary's parents were Frederick and Margaret Yahne from the Taneum Canyon. This piece of land is still in our family with the orchard still producing. Alonzo , Ray and Doc and Patty all played for dances around the Kittitas Valley, playing in what was called Sackett's Hall. My brother Lon and I were born in the front bedroom of our Grandfather and Grandmother Sackett's house on the Thorp Road, delivered by Dr. Dean and assisted by Grandma Sackett. Our early years were in the Manastash canyon. I remember little about those years. I was told by my grandmother and others that I had pneumonia when I was about two and Dr. Dean came to our home and operated on by lungs to relieve the pressure. When he did the fluid hit the wall. (Yes, I still have the scar) Another time Christine threw the baby kittens in the creek and I jumped into save them. Uncle Ray went in after me. Daddy was a bootlegger and got caught. He spent a night in jail because he hid the evidence. When he went back to get the evidence, someone had stolen it. Daddy was in the motorcycle division during the first World War. Daddy loved the Kittitas Valley. He was never happy anywhere else. He lived his last years in the Union Hotel in Ellensburg. Alonzo and Margaret bought the Union Hotel in the twenties and lived there, renting rooms until grandad Sackett's death. Grandma continued, but finally turned it over to my Father, Alonzo. ---- Marlene Sackett (Mrs Ray Hogan, Rochester, Wash)

I have info about the marriage of Dock Sacket and Ida V Mattox, from the records in the Ellensburg courthouse. It says that Joe J Sackett, and Ida V Mattox were married on the 15th of Feb 1926. Joe was 28 and Ida was 21. Her father was Elmer Mattox and her mother was Mary Yahne. Wit: Maude Coverdale and W. W. Rogers. License #3646
