  John's parents were Samuel and Lydia Hopkins Fitzhugh who, together with their eight children, moved to Davidson County from Guilford County, NC, between 1801-1804. They later lived in Madison County, Tennessee and he and his wife had 14 children. Found in 1860 Census at age 69, living with dauther Angelina and supposed housekeeper Lydia Goodman age 30. Confirms birth in North Carolina and was a farmer with substantial holdings. Also found in 1850 Census age 58 living with daughters Martha, Susan, Margaret, (Angeline) Paulina and son John. (with one female slave, aged 58) John B. Fitzhugh purchased the family homeplace from some of his siblings.
