- Flavius Dalmatius was the son of Constantius I and his wife Theodora, andthe half-brother of the Emperor Constantine I . His two sons, by anunknown wife, Flavius Dalmatius and Hannibalianus held high offices intheir uncle's administration. Although his early years seem to have beenspent in Gaul at the city of Tolosa, he may have been recalled as earlyas the mid 320s. In any case, he was named a consul and censor in 333. InAntioch, where he seems to have been in charge of the Eastern frontier,he investigated a murder charge against Bishop Athanasius of Alexandria;in 333/334 he put down the revolt of the usurper Calocaerus in Cyprus. In335, with some soldiers under his command, he was able to save Athanasiusfrom certain death at the hands of his foes at the Council of Tyre. Hewas among those who perished in the imperial purges of 337 which followedthe death of the Emperor Constantine in May of that year.
