Notes - Emperor of Rome in the West from 375-392, Valentinian II succeeded on thedeath of his father in 375, only 4 years old, to rule with his brotherGratian (Valentinian II was granted Africa, Italy, and part ofIllyricum). During his minority, Justinia administered the government. In387, he was driven out of Italy by the Emperor Maximus who had deposedhis brother and gained all of Gaul, Britain, and Spain. Valentiniansought protection with the Emperor Theodosius who administered the East,who restored him to power in 388 as sole-ruler of the West (Maximus waskilled). Valentinian was murdered in 392 by his general Argobast whoplaced the puppet Eugenius on the throne.
