- Duke of Clarence, Earl of Ulster Lionel was styled earl of Ulster, and in 1362 he became duke of Clarence. Philippa was promptly married, by the king's arrangement, to Edmund Mortimer, the son of the man whom Edward had restored tothe earldom of March in 1354, the result of which was to transform the earls of March into the greatest landholders in England outside the royal family.
