    • Edwin "Ed" Dale Varner, 81, passed away on 2/1/2008 at Kansas City Hospice House. He was a resident of Raytown for 75 years. Graveside service will be at Floral Hills Memorial Gardens at 3 p.m. on Saturday, 2/9/08, visitation one hour prior at D.W. Newcomer's Sons Floral Hills Chapel.

      Ed was born in Macks Creek, Mo., on February 16, 1926, to Bert Lonzo and Ella Floral "Flo" (Vance) Varner. He was a member of First Baptist Church of Raytown for 75 years and recently attended Oakwood Baptist Church. He married Ruth Leon (Harrington) in 1946 of Bonner Springs, Kan. They recently celebrated 61 years of marriage in September 2007. Ed was preceded in death by his mother "Flo" and father Bert, as well as baby sister Irene, and brother Harold. He is survived by his wife Ruth, three children, Bruce (wife Charlene), David (wife Nancy), and Pamela, six grandchildren, Jennifer (step) (husband Brian) Flavin (step granddaughter), Julia, Paul, Greg, Hannah, Joshua, three step grandsons, Michael (wife April), Craig, Brad, and two step great grandchildren, Merrick and Alana. Ed served in the Air Force in WW II. He worked four years at Leeds Chevrolet before being recalled to active duty, from the reserves, for two years in the Korean War. He then worked as a route salesman for the Country Club Dairy for three years. He worked for Bendix (Allied Signal now Honeywell) for 33 years before retiring in 1988. Ed also served as a reserve police officer (Sgt) in Raytown for 10 years and was the departments first motorcycle patrolman. The family requests no flowers but memorial gifts to KC Hospice House, Missouri Baptist Children's Home, or City Union Mission.
