Notes - Biography
Elizabeth Moseley was born 14 Jul 1725[1][2] in Middlesex County, Virginia, British Colony, daughter of John Moseley and Mary Nichols.[3] She was christened 25 Jul 1725 at Christ Church Parish, Middlesex County, Virginia.[4] Elizabeth was married to Thomas Poor in 1740, St. James Northam Parish, Goochland County, Virginia, British Colony.[5]
Elizabeth and Thomas lived in Goochland County, Virginia, where all their 11 children were born, who lived to maturity. Elizabeth's father, John Moseley, executed a deed of gift 17 Oct 1744 to his son-in-law Thomas Poor and his daughter Elizabeth Poor, of three slaves, Ben, Hannah and Sue.[6]
Elizabeth's husband died in 1788, leaving a will which loaned Elizabeth the use of most of his property during her lifetime or widowhood. It became necessary for Elizabeth to give power of attorney to Obediah Smith, her trusty and loving friend (and probably her daughter Lucy's husband) to recover her property apparently from George Thomason (probably her daughter Mary's second husband), Charles Bowles and John Montgomery.
Apparently this was not successful, and she gave a second power-of-attorney to her son-in-law Wm. Brill/Britt (husband of her daughter, Sarah) to recover "three negroes given to me by my father John Mosley dec'd. Ben, Frances & Sue with their increase, now in possession of Zachariah Hayden (daughter Elizabeth's husband), James Scruggs (daughter Susanna's husband), Joseph Lambert (daughter Jane's husband), Saml Cosby (daughter Mildred's husband), Abraham Perkins, Nathl Parrish which are now on loan from my deceased husband to the several persons above mentioned during his natural life which has now expired."[7]
Included at February Court 1789 was a Return of Wm Sampsons Collection as Dep Shff for Stephen Sampson Sheff for 1786, were Wm Poor; Elizabeth Poor for the Thos. Poor Estate; and Robt. Poor Jr. Elizabeth's son William Poor received half of the land where Thomas Poor had lived, and was under age 21 when his father's will was written.[8]
Elizabeth died about 1801 (SDATE 1 JUL 1801) in Goochland County, Virginia.[9] Her death is recorded in the St James Northam Parish registry.
