Notes |
- G. Frederick Wright, Enoch's grandson says the following in hi s book, "Story of My Life and Work" (1916):
"Enoch Wright, my grandfather, was born in Pittsfield, Massachus etts, in 1763. His parents came from Northampton, Massachusetts . What their name was I have not been able to learn, for the Wri ghts were at that time a numerous family in the Connecticut vall ey.
"At the close of the Revolutionary War we find Enoch, at the ag e of sixteen years, enlisted as a teamster in the campaign whic h ended in surrender of Cornwallis at Yorktown, en event which h e was allowed to witness. His discharge from the service was date d on the field, and reads as follows:
Camp York Town, Virgine: Oct. 10: 1781 thius Certifyes that Enoc h Wright is Discharged the
wagon Servis on Account of Inebility of helth & not haveing An y Teme of his own thotBest So to do

all Isuing Comiss are Desird to furnish the Barer With Provision s to Connecticut.
"Why he should have gone to Connecticut is not certain, but it i s surmised that he was attracted thither by the presence of Tryp hena West, whose family was originally from connecticut, but wa s found not long after residing in Pittsfield. pp. 3-4
------------------------
In a hand-written letter to Margaret (probably M. Kneil Crowell ) dated 22 Apr 1931 the writer (later identified by Patricia Smi th as most likely being Frances Mary Wright Sturges, daughter o f Johnson Wright) she said "Enoch Wright came from Pittsfield Ma ss. married there to Tryphena West. Came up to No. New York abou t 1790 and bought land from N.H. grant for a shilling per acre . Discovered mistake in title so pd. another shilling per acre . Had two children born in Mass. , Sarah and Orrin" (Other chil dren born in Whitehall.) Clearly this is a mistake in that Sara h was the fourth child.
------------------------
Paternal Family Lines of Frances Mary Wright Sturges (1858 - 194 4) (typed manuscript - copy sent to T. R. Kneil 1997 by Patrici a Smith) states that Enoch was born 26 March 1763 in Pittsfield , MA and that he married Tryphena West 1782 or 1783 (two differe nt dates given) in Tolland, Connecticut.
------------------------
Wright Bible owned by J. D. Wright - copy in Michigan State Libr ary (Michigan Bible Records and Genealogical Notes, 1935-1936 co mpiled and Indexed by Vivian Lyor Moore) gives Enoch's birth a s 28 March 1763 in Pittsfield.
-----------------------
A listing of births, deaths etc. of the Colburn and Wright famil ies in the hands of G. Kneil apparently was copied (I would gues s) from a bible . It is "signed" in the following manner: "Copie d by Mary Ann Smith, July 31st 1861, Whitehall, N.Y." The origin al source is unknown to me (TRK). In it she writes that Enoch Wr ight was born in Pittsfield, Mass., March 26, 1763 and Tryphen a West born Tolland, Conn. January 21, 1760. Their marriage wa s not recorded. Death dates correspond with other records.

In a letter addressed to William J. Morison, Asst. Professor o f History, Louisville, Kentucky and written by Mrs. G. Frankli n Brown, in Fond du Lac, Wis, dated 26 Jun 1972 (letter in Archi ves at Oberlin College in Ohio). Mrs. Brown says, "In reply to y our letter of June 19, I do think it was very possible that th e father of Enoch Wright (1763 - 1810) was Josiah Wright (c. 172 6 - 1806) born in northampton, Mass. who removed to Pittsfield , Mass. in 1752. Josiah was the son of Samuel Wright (168 3 - ) and Jemima King. (See p. 163, DESCENDANTS OF SIR JOHN WR IGHT, by Curtis Wright, 1915. Josiah's death date was April 16 1 806 at Pittsfield - V. R. Pittsfield City Clerk's Office)
"I have written innumerable letters to various city and townshi p clerks trying to verify the birth of Enoch Wright, the marriag e and (to the Berkshire Co. Probate Ct.) a will for Josiah, wit h no success. Another early settler to Pittsfield was William Wr ight, who came there in 1754. He died in April 8, 1777, leavin g a will, naming his children, but Enoch was not one. However, h e did name his 'beloved brother Josiah Wright.' as his sole exec utor.
"Another (two) Wrights mentioned in Smith's HISTORY OF PITTSFIEL D, was a Joseph Wright and Joseph Wright, Jr. V.R. Pittsfield Ci ty clerk's Office have recorded the death of a Joseph Wright i n 1768, but no will was filed in the Co. Probate's Office for hi m. He may possible be of the Joseph Wright family, (p. 155, C. W right's DESC. OF SIR JOHN WRIGHT) either #1087-a or a son of tha t Joseph.
---------------------------------
In a letter from Barabara F. Cook, Archivist, Tolland Historica l Society, dated 4 Feb 1999 to G. Kneil she says:
"Tryphena West was born in Toland 21 Jan 1760 to Samuel West an d Sarah Lathrop West.... Sarah Lathrop was the daughter of Ichab od Lathrop and Grand-daughter of Hope Lathrop who moved here fro m Barnstable in 1726. Ichabod married Abigail Baker of Barnstabl e, on November 9, 1732. Sarah was the fourth of seven children ( and the second Sarah), born January 22, 1740.
"Tryphen's birth is recorded in the Vital Records Vol 2 page 17 , and Vol 5 page 58. Unfortunately there is no record of her mar riage to Enoch Wright.
------------------------------
Don Collins says that he thinks that the Josiah and Elizabeth Wr ight that were in Pittsfield came from Wethersfield, CT and ar e not the descendents of Joseph Wright and Ruth Sheldon. Don sa ys that Josiah's father was Ebenezer Wright and Sarah Butler. H e has Elizabeth's father as Ephraim Williams and mother Elizabet h ?. Don noted that Josiah Wright that was in Pittsfield also h ad a
brother William there.
Enoch was appointed Justice of the Peace 20 Mar 1810.
