George Waldegrave, Esq. was born circa 1483 probably at Smallbridge, Bures St. Mary, Suffolk, England, the son of Sir William Waldegrave of Smallbridge and his wife, Margery Wentworth.[1]
He married Anne Drury, daughter of Sir Robert Drury, Speaker of the House of Commons, and Anne Calthorpe, circa 1502(?). They had <5> 4 sons(unless one predeceased his father):
?Sir William
?George
?Edward, Esq
?Richard,
and two daughters:
?Anne, wife of Henry Bures, Esq., and of Sir Clement Higham
?Phyllis, wife of Thomas Higham, Esq.[2]
George's father, Sir William, died on 30 June 1527, and George, his mother, and his brother William served as the executors of his will.[1] Half of Sir William's personal goods were bequeathed to his wife with the other half to be divided among Sir William's three legitimate sons. George's mother was the primary heir of most of Sir William's property with George holding reversion rights to those properties. In his own right, George was bequeathed the manors of Smallbridge, Taynes, and Lylsey in Suffolk, all of the lands held by his father in Mohkislligh in that same county as well as the manors of Walgrave, Tylwell and Slypton in Northamptonshire.[3] George also received the manors of Levenya Strattons, Overhall also known as Roper's Manor, and Netherhall, all located in Suffolk, but not mentioned in his father's will.[4]
George Waldegrave became a very wealthy man after his father's will was proved in London on 6 March 1527/1528. However, he enjoyed his wealth only briefly for he died on 8 July 1528.[1] He had prepared a will two days before in which he asked to be buried Church of Bures St. Mary's on the Isle of Jesu beside the grave of his father. He bequeathed all of his lands to his wife, Ann, with reversion rights to his four sons in the order of their birth; all of his sons were under the age of 21 years at the time of the will's preparation.[5]
George was buried at Bures St. Mary, Suffolk. His estate was probated on 25 August 1528.
(see Notes in Collaborate for full text of his will)
