The first of definite record of this line was James Purcell who married Sarah Dowell. Their son was George Dowell Purcell.
George Dowell Purcell, bonr Va., 1811, died 1886; married 1842, Mary Lucinda Avery, born Feb. 5, 1826, died 1856, daughter of Samuel and Lucinda (Lane) Avery. Samuel Avery, born N.C., Nov. 14, 1788, died May 31, 1872, the son of William Avery, member of the N.C. House of Commons. His wife Lucinda Lane, born 1796, died 1870, was the daughter of Nathaniel Lane, born 1770, died 1852, and his wife Elizabeth Smith; descendant of Sir Ralph Lane, who's wife was first cousin to Catherine Parr, sixth Queen of King Henry VIII. Sir Ralph Lane, was 1st Governor of "Lost Colony of Roanoke," 1585-1586; returned to England with Sir Francis Drake. (Reference: Paul Greene's "The Lost Colony of Roanoke.") William Avery was the brother of Waightstill Avery, signer, Mecklenberg (N.C.) Declaration of Independence.
James S. Purcell, Civil War Veteran, merchant and planter, the son of the above George Dowell and Mary Lucinda (Avery) Purcell, born 1843, died 1909, married Feb. 2, 1868, Frances Melinda Cole, born 1849, died 191? daughter of Richard W. Cole and wife Eliza Jane Jones; descendant of William Cole (1598-1664), who came from England, 1618.
Rev. George Dowell Purcell, son of the above marriage, born 1870, died 1932; married May 24, 1899, Ela Lee Browne, born 1872, died 1915, the daughter of James Newton Browne.
